Dream Theater – Breaking all Illusions Lyrics 14 years ago
FYI, the quote/sample in the middle of the first verse is from Kahlil Gibran, and is as follows:

“Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens. Out of suffering have emerged the strongest souls; the most massive characters are seared with scars.”

AMAZING song, by the way, and totally has a "Learning To Live" feel, as well as bits of "Octavarium" and "In The Presence Of Enemies"!

Lyrically speaking, it is a sequel to "Far From Heaven", and is about being able to get over your own issues and learning to live with them, or overcome them, and become a better person. Or something like that...

Great guitar solo in the middle - JP wasn't kidding about the "La Villa Strangiato" vibe of it!

Where is it said that this is their last epic? And what is "DP's last song of their 'so-called' last album"?

Thanks but I already posted the correct lyrics up last weekend before the album came out as I got my Collector's Set the Friday before release.

Good luck seeing it live. It's been hinted by JR that it's likely they won't do the song live this album's tour (09-10)... it's just too soon for MP to play it on-stage as the song is very personal to him. I totally respect it, but chances are, it'll land in "Disappear"-territory and be only played a couple times... if ever. Hopefully it doesn't land in "Space-Dye Vest"-territory!

Dream Theater – The Shattered Fortress Lyrics 16 years ago
Correction to the opening stanzas:
Freedom calls my name
Serenity keeps me sane
Happiness it dulls the pain

Honest to see my place
Open to other ways
Willingness to understand

Justice but do not judge
Courtesy for others' flaws
Kindness it's not that hard

Self-restraint of tongue and pain
Inventory my daily friend
Analysis let down your guard

After the first chorus in X. Restraint, the second verse should be:
You're smart enough for me to trust go live your life now
Just keep these steps in your life and you'll know how
If you're not sure, ask yourself
"Have I done to them
As I would have them do to me?"

Then the end of X. Restraint should be:
I once thought it better to be right
But now I have finally seen the light
Sometimes you've got to be wrong
And learn from mistakes
I live with serenity now
Not self-righteous hate

The end of XI. Receive is printed as:
I am ready
Help me be all I can be
I am ready
Help guide me and keep me free

Then the last step, XII. Responsible, is print just once as:
I am responsible
When anyone, anywhere
Reaches out for help
I want my hand to be there

"Considering that Kevin Moore wrote this"... except, IIRC, John Petrucci wrote this song.

Aniland- I think MP said in an interview that the event that inspired these lyrics happen "a few years ago". I could be wrong, but it's somewhere out there. I guess we'll find out more after the album comes out and if anyone in the band says more about the lyrics.

Also, in the same voice MP uses in "Repentance" to site the Twelve Promises, he sites the Eleventh Step Prayer (a.k.a. the St. Francis Prayer). Here is a transcription of his version spoken during Step XI:

"Help me make a channel of thy peace,
that where there is hatred, I may bring love;
that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness;
that where there is discord, I may bring harmony;
that where there is error, I may bring truth;
that where there is doubt, I may bring faith;
that where there is despair, I may bring hope;
that where there are shadows, I may bring light;
that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.
that I may seek to comfort rather than to be comforted;
that I may seek to understand rather than to be understood;
that I may seek to love rather than to be loved;
for it is by self-forgetting that one finds;
it is by forgiving that one is forgiven."

Any help on the second verse would be great!

This has to be the most touching song DT has written in years- musically and lyrically, it's probably my favorite song off the album, and will surely be a concert staple for years! I think this would make a great concert ender or even encore! Can't wait to hear it live!

I'm not so sure... this writer who seems to be having trouble getting their thoughts out onto the page seems to be in some despair... a blank page has left them with a blank life, and they seem to live through their words. So really, the world is what they create for themselves, what they write and the inspiration for which they write.

It sounds more like "Fateful ascent" rather than "Faithful ascent"...

Also, in the opening stanza:
Freedom - Calls my name
Serenity - Keeps me sane
Happiness - It dulls the pain
Honest - To see my fate
Open - Don't want to wait
Willingness - To understand
Justice - Why do you judge?
Courtesy - ???
Kindness - It's not that hard
Self Restraint - ???
Inventory - My daily bread
Analysis - Until you're gone

...that's from what I could gather. A lot of these words (sung/spoken by MP) are from previous songs, most notably TGP and TDS, are likely in the AA book(s) a lot.

While the song has some modern-rock tendencies, it feels a little more vague than the obvious U2/Coldplay influences that "I Walk Beside You" suffered from.

Regardless, I enjoy it as much as IWBY, if not more so! It's very melodic and as a short ballad, it works well, especially in the context of the album, lyrically and musically.

"Of radical fears" sounds like "Of radical ideas" to me.

Also, it sounds like it should be "Bound by oath and honor" rather than "Bound by open honor" and "esoteric thought" (not thoughts).

Great analysis LittlePrincezz!

I wonder if they'll cut the whole instrumental section out for the single... sounds like they could the way the riff plays before and after it.

Dream Theater – A Nightmare to Remember Lyrics 16 years ago
After a few days of listening to this song carefully, there are some lyrics here that aren't right. Here's what I think they should be:

"A Nightmare To Remember"
Lyrics by John Petrucci

A nightmare to remember
I'll never be the same
What began as laughter
So soon would turn to pain

The sky was clear and pretty
The air was thick and still
Now I'm not one to soon forget
And I bet I never will

Picture for a moment
The perfect irony
A flawless new beginning
Eclipsed by tragedy

The uninvited stranger
Started dancing on his own
So we said goodbye to the (__???__)
(there's 3 syllables here, not 2) made our way back home

Life was so simple then
We were so innocent
Father and mother
Holding each other

Without warning, out of nowhere
Like a bullet, from the night
Crashing fast, rubber and steel
Scorching fire, glowing light

Screams of terror, pain of fear
Sounds of sirens, smoke in my eyes
Silent stillness, blackened silence
No more screaming, no more cries

Stunned and bewildered
Cold and afraid
Torn up and broken
Frightened and dazed

Stunned and bewildered
Cold and afraid
Torn up and broken
Frightened and dazed

Lying on the table in this unfamiliar place
I'm greeted by a stranger, a man without a face
He said "Son, do you remember? Do you even know your name?"
Then he shined a light into my eyes and said "Take this for the pain"

Hopelessly drifting, bathing in beautiful agony
I am endlessly falling, lost in this wonderful misery
In peaceful sedation I lay half awake
And all of the panic inside starts to fade
Hopelessly drifting, bathing in beautiful agony

"Tell me does this hurt you" said the faceless man
"Can you move all of your fingers? Can you try your best to stand?"
I asked about the others, "Is everyone okay?"
He told me not to worry as he turned and looked away

Hopelessly drifting, bathing in beautiful agony
I am endlessly falling, lost in this wonderful misery
In peaceful sedation I lay half awake
And all of the panic inside starts to fade
Hopelessly drifting, bathing in beautiful agony

Day after day, and night after night
We play out the events, did they ever see the red light?
Over and over, scene by scene
Like a recurring nightmare haunting my dreams

How could you prepare for what would happened next?
It's (__???__) that you'd ever have to see his father such a mess
It's a miracle he lived, it's a blessing no one died
By the grace of god above everyone survived

Life was so simple then
We were so innocent
It will stay with us forever
A nightmare to remember
---------------------------

At it's length (almost 15 minutes), I'm going to guess this song has movements/sections like "A Changes of Seasons" or "Octavarium"- it's very segmented and has recurring themes/riffs, giving each section it's own feel.

The first part is about these people before the crash, a "simple" and "innocent" time full of laughter.

The second part is about the crash itself; this section is very short, just like the crash, which is shown with the short and quick lyrics.

The third part is where the narrator wakes up to a faceless stranger (a doctor I assume), giving him medicine to take away his pain. I've come to call this section "Beautiful Agony" as it perfectly describes what this feeling would be like - the sedative state, drugged up and trying to recall the events of an accident in such a confusing state of mind.

The fourth part begins with the guitar solo in 5/4 (which is a riff from earlier), and begins the crazy instrumental section up to MP's vocal, which seems to be outside of the original narrator's perspective. Then at the end returns a similar verse from earlier with more of the prior themes coming back.

Porcupine Tree – The Sky Moves Sideways (Phase One) Lyrics 17 years ago
This is quite possibly one of my top 5 PT songs (definitely top 10), and the album itself is amazing.

One correction about the lyrics, looking at the official PT website, it's "Ghosts across the delta" in the second stanza. I also think the 6 seperate sections should be added to this as parts of the song. Granted the second part "I Find That I'm Not There" is the only part that has lyrics, but for the song's sake, I'd like to see the other parts listed here.

As for the meaning of the song, it's very trippy, but I like that ideas about it being in the sky, flying perhaps. Maybe it's an out-of-body experience with drugs involved? Phrases like "blank space", "slow burn" and the last stanza are all very fantastic and sound like you would have to be totally out of it to "hear the evening break".

Dream Theater – Repentance Lyrics 18 years ago
The voice-over at the end of "Repentance", presumably done by Portnoy himself, is the following text:

"If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through.
We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.
We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.
We will comprehend the word serenity and we will know peace.
No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others.
That feeling of uselessness and self pity will disappear.
We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows.
Self-seeking will slip away.
Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change.
Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us.
We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us.
We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves.
Are these extravagant promises? We think not. They are being fulfilled among us—sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them."

Scroll half-way down the page. It's that text, word-for-word.

Also, for "Repentance", I can clearly hear Neal Morse's voice, coming in at 6:52 saying "I'm sorry for what I did...". Can anyone else confirm that?
The ending also has the following:
"You're only as sick as your secrets, but the truth shall set you free."
"The truth is the truth, it's all you can do is live with it."
