Ok, musically, this song doesnt mean that much to me, but lyrically..OH DEAR GOD! i absolutely love and can relate to every single line she's saying, she just wants to say in this song that while some people tend to be the realistic-scientific kind that cares about education and all that shit, other people care about feelings and trying to make the world a better place through whatever they do (basically art) Katy exposes one controversial thought though, that those educated type of people often tend to think theyre very important and beyond making mistakes and most importantly wear masks because they actually do thons of mistakes, hence "im a fragile kind of glass, i wont wear ur stupid mask" oh and when she says "who are you to know my story who ar eyou to read my book" it means history and literature courses. this song is just amazing and it really made me proud of myself to be the "eccentric" in school, it really gives you a beautiful feeling for being different... Okay, first of all... "theyve clipped my wings again/torn them appart and then left me/no use to fly away to my yesterday of freedom" i think its about this phase in ur life when ur a child getting ready to face the world with a happy dreamy face and then all of a sudden you discover what the world really is, yesterday of freedom is definitely related to childhood and the whole wings thing, angels and all, its something that children are interested in "I'll go where secrets are sold where roses unfold I'll sleep as time goes by" Again with the dreams, the phrase "ill sleep as time goes by" is probably my favourite of the song, it seems to Katy that somehow all the pain shes going through wont seem to matter once she sleeps, thats why shes romanticizing sleeping and holding onto it so bad, we all go through those phases of "sleeping" all the time because simply we dont care abt being a part of the world anymore "So hurting here is where I belong dreaming a song blood on my hands to stay strong The flowers in the graveyard are all gone I don't belong there is no right to heal the wrong soup's on hot feelin' like a do or die I can't throw up don't think i even want to try" I dont think this song wouldve been this realistic if it wasnt for the "belong" words in the chorus used twice, teenagers need to belong, if thats not available in the real world, theyll belong in a world of their own imagination where music is the background. Of course shes cutting herself, for the sake of feeling in control which can give her feelings of strength... I wish it wouldve been "you have no right to heal my wrong" it wouldve sounded absolutely amazing to face the society saying "im not gonna change for you" oh and ill vote for the drugs overdose for the line "cant throw up..." katy was a hardcore drug addict, and i dont think she gives much importance to anorexia... one thing is certain, this song is a masterpiece, my biography back into those dark days of 14year oldism, probably the most sincere and heartfelt song on the album |

wow! what an amazing song, its been ringing in my head ever since i bought the album, its so catchy and the chorus "you might just turn into something i like" is pure art, giving such a sense of possibility, this line just shakes me! well to me, the song is abt this new guy she met who thinks shes the "all american type of girl", so she faces him with her past "Ive been fucked up, ive been through a lot, im moody i can be depressed i can be a total bitch when im angry, but hey guess what, theres a new rule for me "I wanna live before i die" "which to me really really sounds like a new beginning, like a new philiosophy in her life, so chances are shes changed, shes more confident now, shes got things under control but still nothing is for granted, so "this is me, i like you, if u wanna be in a relationship with me thats great if u dont it doesnt seem to matter"... the whole song is abt possiblities, things can change with a blink of an eye but shes sure of one thing :she really likes him NOW... but i dont really think theres been using in the relationship and DEFINITELY its not about an ex! If you ask me whats the most powerful line in a song ive ever heard it would be "you drew the sparkle back into my eyes with ur coloured pencil tracing the years of my hunger like a plastic stencil" i dont really see it as a sexual song, i see the first 2 lines as something close to the "im fucked up"situation and then u came and drew the sparkle... and theres another contradiction in the later lines when she says "my veins are sweetly singing while blood drains from my cup"...to me, its like she is close to happiness, she actually IS satisfied yet is not willing to change herself for her partner because shes basically saying "ur makin me happy, but it doesnt mean im healthy mean" (the whole blood thing) i adore this song, "theres so much beauty that we take for granted" |

i dont know how to say it but this song, in its dreamy lyrics made me see myself in a lot more realistic way :which is that im a total dreamer.(?) basically, Katy does not belong, yes its true, but i dont see that much tensity in her asking to get out of the world as if die...its more like "yeah im turning into a woman, but i still wanna dream my life away, because i can" which refers to the talents and visions she has. My favourite line is "Out of the wreckage that i do", which i can really relate to...the part of us thats a little too wild and so-in-it socially, when in reality we're so much more than that, so much different but we're so emotionally dependant to people that we feel obliged to do it their way, at least at ages 13-14-15, later to find out that our eccentric part is what will actually make us succeed socially, or else we'll just fade away... Maybe its not really what the song is about, but this is how i see it, the constant fight between "who i am" and "who they want me to be" |

oh well, is it just me or the song is really not related to dreams? this is my explanation ... fiona has a secret, her lover is dying to know what the secret is so she constantly tease him about the secret. the dream part is a metaphor to say that her lover is over-protective of her or smothers her in a way because in the dream he "endeared" to her and thats why she seems so dominant in the song...and the final part, the whole "stretch myself across like a bridge and i pull you to the edge" shes trying to paint a picture that she wanted to kill him, and "stand there waiting trying to attain the end to satisfy the story", she makes it sound like someone of the couple should die and its fiona who takes her own life away "as i rise to meet my glory"... and then it all start makin sense when she says "my big secret is gonna hover over your life, gonna keep you reachin..." she died, so did the secret with her... i know that might sound stupid but to me that song is more of a "fiona apple type of bed time stories" One thing is certain, she sure succeeded in makin all of us lost in this breath-taking song! |

When i first heard this song (i downloaded it)i was so shocked! i still wasnt ready for a freaky fiona, and 2 months later when the album came out, i couldnt afford to buy it first AND i did not wanna buy it coz i thought Fiona clearly has issues. i have no idea why but i couldnt help myself but take that album from Virgin and listen to the 1mn sample, i would call my friends and be like "listen to this and laugh"...oh god now its an addiction! not just this song but the whole album! Keep this in mind : if you listen to any song and hate it first give it some time ull absolutely love it! I Absolutely adore this song!Its been in my IPod ever since the new album came out(2 freggin years ago!) its probably my favourite fiona apple song. the lyrics, the meaning, the smoky piano, amazing! I don't know why but i think that its supposed to be a dreamy song, like fiona didnt really mean that much about "mistresses" and "wifes". i dont know. To be honest, if someone doesnt know Fiona and wanted to get something off her songs to understand that human being, it would probably be "Everything good, i deem too good to be true Everything else is just a bore Everything i have to look forward to Has a pretty painful and very imposing before" and i can really, really, terribly relate to that.maybe thats why this song is my all time favourite fiona apple song!
