i've loved slayer from show no mercy to the present. although i am a devoted Christian i have to admit, this song (along with the entire Gpd Hates Us All album) is fucking great. One thing though, i do not like it when some fans say "their old lyrics were so much better, these new ones sound like they were written by a frustrated six year old", no not at all. I've got your back Ramius, look back a page; I myself had a run-in with the Songmeanings.net S.S./Luftwaffe Squadron who don't seem to think that one who posts on a POSTING sight should be entitled to their own opinions lest they conform to the majority of "posters". Anyway there is another thing that really annoys me about this song. There are bands out there, dozens of them, who sacrifice their knowledge and time to compose beautiful/symphonic/melodic works of musical genious to the likes of which Mozart and Bach would praise (i.e. Symphony X, Le'Rue Delashay, etc.). Not only do they compose amazing and jaw dropping scores of music, but in addition, their lyrics are superb; Profound works of poetry that still the heart with tranquility, rage, blithe, etc. . . NOW, also coexisting in the plethora of modern music lay artists such as "Plain White Tees", "My Chemical Romance", "Fallout Boy", etc. Although all these "artists"(hardly worthy of the title) tend to do is straighten their greasy hair, throw a pair of tight jeans on, create a three chord progression on a guitar, and moan/wail about the loss of their one week long serpent-hooker relationship, somehow, they receive more recognition than the ones who REALLY deserve it. I am not saying that every single song in my musical library has to be as complex as "Toccata and Fugue in D minor: or as profound as "Paradise Lost", all I am saying is NO, i do not like this song, it IS in fact hurting me, bands like this who get all the undeserved recognition should be rotting amid the barren plains of Cocytus, and those who are as stupid as to give these heathens their hard earned money should be strung on a Noose with their eyes sewn shut. I was quite sceptical upon the departure of Matt and the introduction to the new singer, but MY GOD. Although Barlow is still my fav iced earth singer i have to admit, Ripper Owens does a HELL-OF-A-JOB on this one along with all the other tracks on the Glorious Burden. It's amazing how virtually 70% of metal bands these days just dumbfoundedly bark into a microphone about Satan, but Iced Earth has so much more depth; Sure on the occasion they belch and growl upon theology issues(which for them still isn't bad because i mean c'mon, ITS ICED FUCKING EARTH[they dont make mistakes haha] but for the most part each one of their song tells a different cpmplex and profound story. Also this song is about the Battle of Gettysburg and how Lee's plan failed . . . It's his intense and consuming guilt for such a huge downfall . . . great song . . . great lyrics . . . GREAT BAND! |
