| I agree with chogg and ieatfood. after listening to this song many times (i have had new moon in my car cd player since i got it) i also believe the words are "drink", "stung", and "front" although oddly "foot he's throwing down" makes sense to me because it would mean that he's in control of her (throws his foot down). the song is about a woman being controlled by a man, a woman who was probably rather spunky and opinionated before but has lost her confidence through the relationship with this dude who turned into a jerk as soon as the relationship ensued. I don't know who the song is about but i prefer to think of it as a universal theme rather than being about these people i don't know. i can apply it to my own life. | |

thank you for your comment edmonddantes. i love this song and i agree that references to drug use and addiction are "scattered" as you put it through a lot of his songs. And that's OK... it's no secret that he was addicted to heroin and if he never wrote about something that was as integral part of life for him (because anyone who has ever had a drug problem knows it sort of just takes over your life) that would be strange, and also would take away from the brutal honesty and raw beauty of his music... the reason hardcore fans fell in love with him/his work to begin with. I've seen and read quite a few interviews of his and i don't think elliot wanted people to listen to his songs and assume they knew him as a person just because he was an artist who revealed bits and pieces of truths about his own life through his music. We don't know what he was thinking when he wrote his songs. I do think however that as fans we want to believe that our interpretations clue us in on the brilliant mind of that beautiful man. |

"you make a perfect angel in the snow" is a comment on that while she (or whoever or whatever) maybe perfect in conceptual form (beautiful and original as a snowflake, fragile and delicate as an angel in the snow which eventually gets lost under more snow or melts) in reality is not perfect but a mold of that idea of perfection perhaps the person is lost in the idea of what they would like to be, trying so hard to fit some perfect mold just to belong somewhere; The dynamic beauty of who you are being "crushed out" under all that "snow" whether that represents drugs or just other things we bury our true selves under squeezing out the childlike innocence which snow angels could also represent yet he loves the person or whatever "don't you know that i love you" Don't be afraid you can be yourself with me; i don't want a perfect illusion; i like the idea of perfect girl with untapped potential,but I LOVE the sad, dirty, hurt, scared, cold mess of a girl that you've become. I want you i love you, that's what i take from that line. i kept thinking of plato the more i read into the lines which makes sense because elliot smith was a philosophy major world of ideas, you know, ideas are greater than the physical manifestations a detached distant depiction of a man (cold still life) in love with a detached distant depiction of a beautiful woman (angel in the snow) phewwww sorry so long..... |
