The National – Thirsty Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this is maybe about the need to still be wanted by someone despite you not being a great person.

"I don't have a hawk in my heart"
hawks sybolize nobility and he is saying he isnt a noble person.

"no dumbass dove in my brain"
possibly he does not have peace of mind or it could also mean that he dosent have the good principles and morals, meaning the dove is refered to in a more christian sense.

Shearwater – Hail Mary Lyrics 18 years ago
a small correction:

And then leave us upon the rocks

im pretty sure is:

And then lead us upon the rocks

refering to wreakers who used to lure trade ships into rocks with false lights so they could plunder the cargo.

Shearwater – La Dame et la Licorne Lyrics 18 years ago
hmm sorry for the typos im new to the site and cant seem to find an edit button, guess i'll have to be more careful in future posts.

"But i cant help thinking when i hear this song that the boy is already dead but she travels to see him anyway"

I think i thought this because the lyrics go:

"Bring back my boy
I loved him
I loved him"

where as "bring him back" could refer to him returning from the war, the "I loved him" does seem to indicate he might be dead.

yes this song does refer to a tapastry which shows the taming of a unicorn. A unicorn can only be tamed by a virgin woman, and more then once the words seem to come from the point of view of a woman.

The unicorn being tamed is often a reference in paintings and such to a man falling in love with a lady and the womans chastaty leading to a faithful relationship.

Going on this i will hazard a guess that this is a bout lovers seperated by war from the point of view of a young chaste woman prehaps harking back to medival times.

The general air of the lyrics seem to be about beauty but also sadness as id reflected by the sad but beautiful melody of the music.

Prehaps this is the lady going to see her lover at the front lines and the beauty she encounters along the way. She seems almost intoxicated with the beauty and the thought of seeing her lover again.

But i cant help thinking when i hear this some that the boy is already dead but she travels to see him anyway, prehaps unconciously seeking her own death so that they can be together.

or prehaps im reading too much into it ;)

Nine Inch Nails – Capital G Lyrics 18 years ago
i must add to my post above that this is not really what the song is about but is probably behind the idea for the title and general jist of the song. The song is more of a composite of the bush/God idea and the corruption of greed.

yer as everyone has already pointed out. god with a small g refers to multiple lesser gods that a faith may believe in (ie anchient greek gods) or untrue gods. To spell god with a capital G means that you believe he is the one true God and the only God. Plus with a capital G he has all the cool super powers of the G, such as being omnipotant, omnipresent and omniscient.

add to this the big G man himself bush and you can either take it to refer to Bush's total belief that he is an agent of God or to prehaps that Bush see's himself in as God.

Nine Inch Nails – Zero-Sum Lyrics 18 years ago
I apoligise if any of this has been mentioned before, but ill just give a couple of my ideas about the song meaning.

*zero-sum refers to a situation in which peoples gains and losses are directly proportional. So one person gains at the expense of someone else.

*In the context of the album the song can be seen as refering to the death of humanity or it could also aside from that be seen as an individuals death and their inablity to forfill a useful purpose in life.

*these 2 points taken togeteher it seems to me as many people have pointed out that it is about peoples willingness to boost their own lifestyle at the expense of others, such as the situation we have at the moment where the west we live in relative luxury at the direct expense of other nations.

*the second verse takes on an individuals view of the end more obviously then the first verse. He lements about the lack of finding peace despite his comfortable life and hopes that after death he will be with his loved one.

*the chorus as most people say is quite obvious. It refers to the basic flaw of humanity and can be seen as refering both to the apocalipse the song seems to be hinting at and also the whole zero-sum concept of gaining at someone elses disadvantage. Quite interesting in that he asks that god forgives us when we were doomed from the start, which would mean that god created us to be doomed.

Anyway loved the song needless to say. Never been a huge fan of NIN before this album even though i have several others from trent, but this album was really fresh and exciting.
