Vienna Teng – Shasta (Carrie's Song) Lyrics 17 years ago
Just wanted to give my two cents on the this last verse:

"and you're thinking about how someone died that day
the you that was so carefully planned
but then again maybe this life is like a sleeping mountain
waking up to shape the land"

She's not thinking about how she got an abortion that day--she's thinking about how while her birth was carefully planned, on the day she was born another woman probably had an abortion. Does that make any sense?

Then she ends the song on a positive note: having a baby doesn't mean the end of the world, just change. ("shape that land")

Vienna Teng – Mission Street Lyrics 17 years ago
I absolutely love this song. The area that Vienna lived in wasn't that great and the window was stuck open, so she always heard the yelling, sirens, etc. With this song she's romanticizing her situation.

Because I'm from a big city, I feel like I can relate. I like how the chorus gets progressively more "optimistic" in a sense, like the longer she sings about Mission Street, the better she feels about it/the more she understands it.

I think another aspect of the song is how incredibly alone you can feel in a such busy city.

My favorite line is: "Mission Street is alive at every hour, like I've never been and feared I may not ever be."

Vienna Teng – I Don't Feel So Well Lyrics 17 years ago
This was inspired by a teacher that Vienna had. He was talking about "I don't feel good" vs. "I don't feel well."

When you say, "I don't feel well," it means that your ability to feel is hindered. This song isn't about someone feeling sick or bad, it's about someone not being able to feel *emotionally*. Based on this, I think she's warning the person ("I thought that you should know") who's "preparing to swear every oath."

Vienna Teng – Stray Italian Greyhound Lyrics 17 years ago
Without knowing it was inspired by attending one of Obama's rallies, I thought this song was about someone cynical that completely lost faith in humanity when the unthinkable happens: she falls in love! And she doesn't know what to do with this positive feeling--she doesn't understand it. I thought that was pretty funny :)

But knowing that it was inspired by the "hope" and "change" that Obama's been talking about, I can imagine Vienna at the rally, full of screaming fans, vibrant colors, fireworks, and promises of hope. After eight difficult years in America, I think Vienna couldn't bring herself to understand the optimism, for two reasons: 1) It's been so long, and 2) If change doesn't happen, she'll be disappointed and hurt, thus her trying to convince herself otherwise. ("This feeling calls for everything that I am... not.")

She was probably thinking, "Yeah, way to get my hopes up, Obama!" Haha.

Vienna Teng – Antebellum Lyrics 17 years ago
Vienna Teng uses "war" as a metaphor to describe a strained relationship between a couple. From the lyrics, I think the couple is married with children ("talk about the little ones"). The couple got into a fight and have agreed to a truce, however, the love hasn't returned.

("I know the border lines we drew between us")
Her and her partner are at a distance, but more importantly, "border lines" invoke the feeling that this distance was agreed to.

("keep the weapons down")
Their "weapons" are their hurtful feelings and "sharp words."

("keep the wounded safe")
Assuming the couple has children, I think of them as the wounded. However, I think it can also be applied to the couple themselves.

("I know our antebellum innocence was never meant to see the light of our armistice day.")
She knows that their "antebellum innocence" (former love) wasn't going to survive for their "armistice day" (truce).

Clearly there is more to the song. In response to the other poster, I don't think of this as having anything to do with the Taiwan/China conflict because the lyrics state "our antelbellum," "our armistice," "the border lines we drew," etc. The pronoun usage makes me think that this conflict is very personal. Not to mention the entire second verse just screams how this is about a troubled relationship. ("But then the fights: the sharp words splintering the night, how I couldn't be what you'd need but oh how I could make you bleed")

I think the most important aspect of this song is the "armistice." This isn't just about a fight--it's about a "cease-fire." The conflict has been recognized and acknowledged by both persons but it's nowhere near resolved.

Fall Out Boy – I've Got a Dark Alley and a Bad Idea That Says You Should Shut Your Mouth (Summer Song) Lyrics 18 years ago
Although this song can be interpreted as a relationship by fans, the main influence for the lyrics in this song is most definitely about Fall Out Boy and their experiences with "the scene."

My Chemical Romance – Disenchanted Lyrics 18 years ago
In response to poserboarder:

The heroes selling cars on TV could possibly equal people that the singer highly respects being reduced to something much less heroic, like car salesmen. This is, of course, happening during a trying time for the singer. People might crush you, but you'll always have what you believe in. However, the singer is being let down by people he respects and therefore it's hard to believe in his ideals.

The "bringing out the old guillotine" line probably means something about taking care of an old grudge, showing their enemies "what they mean." If you bring out a guillotine, you mean serious business, lol.

The lyrics aren't literal so much as they're trying to make a strong point.

---------------------------------------

MY MEANING: The singer is basically saying that he went through an awful lot and made lots of mistakes, and it amounted to nothing since it was all too late before he realized it (because he's dying now). So, he's singing to others and if he's so wrong (in their opinion), why are they listening? And will his death even matter, because it's not like his life then or now, trying to warn others of his mistakes, is really making a difference. Obviously, if they think he's in the wrong then his message means nothing to them. So, "they're just a sad song" and eventually they'll be in the same, self-loathing position he is, "a life long wait for a hospital stay" since they're not learning anything from him.
