Box Car Racer – And I Lyrics 16 years ago
A really good friend, recently turned boyfriend, just put this on a mix for me. We were both in long term relationships where we thought we were completely in love with the person even though we were unappreciated. When they would hurt our feelings, we would console each other. I broke up with my ex because I got tired of how awful he treated me and being anxious of when he might cheat on me next. And my friend's girlfriend broke up with him and completely broke his heart around the same time. We helped each other through the tough times of it and ended up really liking each other. Now we are living the happily ever after.

I feel like this song is completely about that. You feel like you want or need that person you've been with for so long, even if they hurt you, but you have that other person who does everything for you and you know they'll always pull you through.

Also, I believe it's "You looked cold still, your collar was high", not "color was high".

It's not from the father's perspective, except his dialogue. This song is so goddamn beautiful.

Cat Power – The Greatest Lyrics 18 years ago
I feel like this song displays a sense of rebirth. Like she once had these fantastic ambitions, but she was beaten down, in a sense, before she could achieve them. Now, she's saying give it your best shot, because she won't be defeated again. She experienced a period of silence and resting and now she's ready to come back (Melt me down/Into big black armor/Leave no trace of grace/Just in your honor/Lower me down/To culprit south/Make 'em wash a space in town/For the lead/And the dregs of my bed/I've been sleepin')

Struck down, but not destroyed.

Thursday – Autobiography of a Nation Lyrics 18 years ago
Also, allow me to add the dictionary definition of plagiarism, for those of you who are saying it's not:

pla·gia·rism –noun 1. the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work.

These lyrics were extracted from this Michael Palmer poem. I still love Thursday, but I don't think I can respect this song as much as I could for the sole reason that it's plagarized.

Her Space Holiday – Missed Medicine Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't think this is "poking fun" at anything. I think it's describing personal experience and Marc Bianchi is almost putting himself down in this song.

"I've figured out a way to twist reality
Just take a ton of drugs and never go to sleep
Re-rent the saddest movie that you've ever seen
Fill your room with TV sets and put it on repeat
Push all your friends away with the cruel things that you said
if you need company you've got the voices in your head."

I did this for a number of years and blocked myself in this safe, comfortable state of depression. I think that's what he's talking about. Being like that is "safe" and it also provides him with the misery to keep writing these things. In a sense it's also exploiting the same idea as "Art Is Hard", but they're not making fun of anything except the person who wrote them, in the first place.
