Tori Amos – Precious Things Lyrics 15 years ago
Sounds a lot like a christian girl losing her virginity and her faith... Precious things - let them bleed let them wash away.. a reference to her hymen and how that hymen a metaphor for faith.

"so you can make me cum that doesn't make you jesus" - jesus can't really be replaced with anything else... sad? i don't know, growth most certainly...

pretty girls with nine inch nails - reference to jesus' crucifixion - little fascist panties - reference to virginity.

Aesop Rock – Daylight Lyrics 16 years ago
Nobody has updated these lyrics on the web since Aesop published them?

Put one up for shackle-me-not clean logic procreation
I did not invent the wheel I was the crooked spoke adjacent
While the Triple-Sixers' lassos keep Angels roped in the basement
I walk the block with a halo on a stick poking your patience
Y'all catch a thirty second flash visual
Dirty cooperative med platoon bloom head trip split ridiculous
Fathom the splicing a first generation fuck up will trickle down to any hero smack crackin
I pace me game for zero hour completion cretin splash
Duke of early retirement picket dream
American nightmare hoggin the screen
I'll hold the door open so you can stumble in if you'd stop following me 'round the jungle gym
Now it's honor and I spell it with the H I stole from heritage
Merit clutched in the wretched refuse of my teaming resonance
I promise tempest tossed breed with a bleeding conscience
The creed accents responsive but my spores divorce the wattage
And I'm sleeping now wow yeah the settlers laugh
You wont be laughing when your covered wagons crash
You wont be laughing when the buzzards drag your brother's flags to rags
You wont be laughing with the front lawn's spangled with epitaphs (wont be laughing)
And I'll hang my boots to rest when I'm impressed
So I triple knot 'em and forgot em
His origami dream is beautiful but man those wings will never leave the ground
Without a feather and a lottery ticket now settle down

Slacker bound intimate tabloid headline with a pulse
Shimmy across the centerfold enter dead time engulfed
Divvy crumbs for the better souls
With seven deadly stains adhere the blame to crystal conscience
The results a low life counting on one had what he's accomplished
Link me to activism chain activate street sweep
Plug deteriorating zen up in pen dragon
I hawk spores coursed by the spreading of mad men alley gospel
Sinkin your Lincoln Log cabin and Charlie Chaplin waddle
I could zig-zag and zig 'em again but a badge gleam sparkled in my brick wall window
Another thick installment of One Night in Gotham
Without the wretched, "Houston we have a problem"
Attached to the festive batch of city goblins
Who split holiday freaks on a box cut cinema high road bellow
Head gripped watch red bricks turn yellow
Sort of similar to most backbones at camp Icarus
Where the fiddler crabs congregated and get pampered for bickering
Life's not a bitch, life is a beautiful woman
You only call her a bitch 'cause she wouldn't let you get that pussy
Maybe she didn't feel ya'll shared any similar interests
Or maybe you're just an asshole who couldn't sweet talk the princess
Kiss the speaker wire Peter pacifism pagan threshold
Stomach full of halo kibbles
Wingspan cast black upon vigils
Here to Duck Hunt ticker tape vision and pick apart the pixels
I got a friend of polar nature and it's all peace
You and I seek similar stars but can't sit at the same feast
Metal captain, this cat is askin if I seen his little lost passion
Told him, "yeah" but only as I pedaled past him.

Aesop Rock – No Regrets Lyrics 17 years ago
> "She'd never spoken once throughout the spanning of her life"
> Does he mean this literally?

Of course he doesn't mean it literally! She says "I'm busy thank you much" in the song. What he means is that she's never deeply communicated to another human being throughout her life. She'd always been an introverted hermit. To suddenly express herself deeply to another human was uncharacteristic of her.

Really a pretty beautiful song. I see it as a critique of the american lifestyle, of course... And a celebration of going against the grain. It stands in contrast to some of the other songs on Labor Days that examine how tough it is to live outside of it all, but to live in it enough to survive. The feeling is very free and hopeful... some simpathy and some taunts towards those that aren't awake similar to Coffee on None Shall Pass in that sense..

"Stomach full of halo kibbles". Nourishes himself with being good. "Seek similar stars but can't sit at the same feast"... some people achieve their dreams by feeding off of others rather than halo kibbles. Like he's really got it figured out how to best live one's life. Comfortable in being an artist pursuing his passions even though it's so challenging compared to a passionless existence chasing the american dream. Like a lot of folks who sell out for money thinking that once they become rich enough they'll finally get to be who they _really_ are but by that time they've become too entrenched.

Aesop Rock – Keep Off the Lawn Lyrics 17 years ago
Nice anthem of self confidence and purpose. Combined with the feeling of coming out of a funk or a state where the soul has atrophied a little. Very uplifting and happy.

Of course there's plenty of mention of the specifics - such as not letting sales numbers decide how alive, instead being true to the art and letting the fans decide.

Aesop Rock – Coffee (feat. John Darnielle) Lyrics 17 years ago
Hey all, I think this song is actually fairly straight forward if you follow Aesop's work. It's kind of like thoughts from someone in a social coma navigating the American Dream, which to him is more like the American Nightmare.

It's not very political, it's more of like a subjective viewpoint. Consumerism is explored along with the whole package, the 9-to-5 job, sacrificing individual sanity for group insanity...

"We don't need no walkie talking, nope, no walkie talkies - we don't need your coughing when offing the morning coffee no - we just want our hermitry to stay and our coffee to go."

Not really interesting in what you brainwashed "walkie-talkies" are into.. we just want to keep to ourselves... The bit about wanting our coffee to go... kind of brings me back to 9 to 5ers anthem "poor myself a cup of ambition" which was a Dolly Parton lyric orginally. Caffeine is the stimulant we need to get up and face the monotony of our job/"high noon" - see Getaway Car.

He then proceeds to deliver a scathing commentary on those that buy into and perpetuate the mass insanity. But also, implies that he's cool with it... like that's your choice, but I don't want anything to do with it myself. He even says we should "pray for the plagued."

I'd really like to go and interpret each line one by one, but this is pretty much the story that each of my interpretations of these lines fit into, but I'll interpret the individual lines 3rdEyeVision prings up:

* "You got to answer to you at the end of the volatile day, but a model of mercy and might? no way, marionette who will clap and obey."

Starts off with a disclaimer like, hey I don't mean to be judgmental or anything, obviously you have to answer to you, not me in your spiritiual quest.. but let's face it you're kidding yourself if you think you're some model of virtue, you're really just a marionette/puppet willing to jump for the higher powers which control you. And social standing you have right now is because you conformed not because you created it yourself.

* "dude, look, all that noise? call that flight of the water boys"

Water is a metaphor that Aesop uses throughout his work. It's like the metaphor for the counter-culture, real hip-hop culture, art culture, truth, independence etc... Basically this line is just like "we're not having any of that ourselves, see ya"

* "and the last shall be, first to immerse in the pass out heat"

I again see the water metaphor coming into play here. The pass out heat is relevant for its dehydrating implications.

* ", face in the mud where the moxie melt"

Mud, impure dirty water.. moxie can mean courage.. the water gets muddy from melted courage...

* "'til he woke up drowning in tsatke hell"

Most of us do eventually wake up... perhaps only after we've arrived at success - only to discover that we've just been chasing after the wrong things - meaningless junk.

* "more in a cave with a torch on the wall than a window arrangement of porcelain dolls"

There's a lot of room for interpretation here. I myself can't help but think of plato's cave with this line. So it just seems like another attack or expression of sympathy towards the unenlightened man.

* "one little martyr who talk in his face make one little weathermen sharpen the blades"

weathermen is aesop's crew. It's also a reference to the weather underground of the 60's i think? Homegrown terrorists who believed in the violent overthrow of the US government. So it's like, again, the imagery is thick here with the American brainwashed in conflict with the willfully disenfranchised.

Aesop Rock – Fumes Lyrics 17 years ago
I really love this song. The subject is quite easier to follow than most Aesop songs, yet the poetry in it is still quite deep.

It's obviously the story of a couple misguided souls. The female is nihilistic and lost.. The male is misguided and naiive. With the metaphor of Newton's laws, the male figure is spiritually not at rest while the female figure is. She clings to him and uses him and pretends like she cares about his passions, but really she could care less, she's just on her way to death and knows it. He's an introverted fellow, a bit in his own head so he doesn't see her for who she really is and their lives for heading in the direction they really are... He's abusing drugs and destroying himself much like she is, but spiritually he still has hopes and dreams... And he naiively shares them with her with his story of a life together.

She responds with "You ain't shit man, your story's a joke, you should package it with a last rope and six feet of rope."

Which seems cruel. And it is and it isn't.. She's spelling out the harsh truth for him. Hitting him over the head with a clue bat, which is maybe tough love - rather than cruelty. Your story is a joke. Look at yourself! Getting drunk and high! If you took all your hopes and dreams... packaged them (in a grave) with a last smoke and 6 feet of rope. The metaphor is powerful. The hopes are hopeless - without even the gumption to put down the last smoke and climb up out of its grave.

She then proceeds to prove her point as he's out of the house trying to deal with this reality... She chooses death.

hey googlieeyes,

I do have something to point out about that swap tales line.

I'm definately getting homeless imagery. old cardboard city folk.. cardboard cities? cardboard houses? homeless people. Every other penny throw, panhandling. swap tales/tails with heads is a double entendre.. as a penny is thrown and rotates through the heads and tails swap on it. But swapping tails with heads of course also refers to his raps I think. "heads" is hip-hop terminology for like the backpackerish nitch Aes falls in. Like he wont sell out, or conform like rich kings, instead he'll live as a humble bum... because true triumph isn't playing into the machine and exploitation.. it's remaining free and true to yourself.. and ultimately swapping tales with other hip-hop heads is more rewarding. Ultimately he has no regrets with this lifestyle choice he's truly grown and found grace.. Meanwhile those that bought into the rat race will crumble.. they'll fall from grace that they never had, that was just an illusion or lie all along. Yes, this song definately has elements of the rap game in it, but is also about the struggle we all face.. the winner of a rat race is still a rat.... how about finding a path that offers us something more than that? something real and true? even if it means giving up riches and fame and power for a cardboard box, and some friends to shoot the shit with..

Naughty by Nature – O.P.P. Lyrics 18 years ago
Just a nitpick, here. It's not necessarily about cheating on your gf or bf, at least not until the last verse. The first two versus are asking if you're down with OPP. Meaning, gettin down with someone else's gf/bf. The third verse flips it "this girl tried to OPP me" meaning she was the one down with OPP and he himself was the OPP. But the song isn't really endorsing cheating, but to take advantage of those who do cheat (heh heh still not family values but a little bit better)

Here's my personal interpretation of the groceries lines.

Groceries: person.
Shelved groceries: idle/bored/depressed person.

groceries are useful until their expiration date, that is if they are taken off the shelf.

'accidently' taken off the shelf means that there's no intent or purpose behind being useful.

coming back may mean reincarnation or rebirth... either from the dead (you can interpret this alongside easter religious philosophy or snapping out of a depressed funk...

Aesop Rock – Fast Cars Lyrics 18 years ago
"Never mind the bollocks. Like every other week these hipster tabloids jumping on and off my sex pistol's bullets." Like every other week he spins the bottle. Like every other week these fucking fanzines forget if they spit or swallow. "

Sounds like a response to critics. He seems to be expressing contempt for being judged and evaluated by publications he considers trash, whether the evaluation is positive or negative.. Almost as though he resents the limited fame he's had to this point.

"Too bad your inner sheep never forgets to follow, cuz my inner greed to feed your hate for loving us is hostile."

Here he reveals a since of a greedy/hostile motive to continue fueling the sorts of critics that love to bash his fanbase.

"Fortunate for me it coincides with what comes natural, so the mongrels that I run with turn the 'fuck you's into fast food. "

Turns the critiques/critics into a cheap and easy meal? Maybe this is a 'get that dirt off you sholder' sentiment.

"Like a little freak sick of the 3 o'clock bully knuckle dust, nursing his last shiner, finds the shoebox in his mother's truck. Tomorrow's extra curricular punching bag will finger daddy's widow maker out a brown lunch bag."

Obviously, the shoebox contains a gun aka 'widow maker.' And we're now on the subject of bullied kids shooting up their schools.

"This is where the hunch back snake oil peddlers stuck under the burgundy sky of spaghetti westerns tend to bubble up. Weathermen huddle up. Today the son of one too many 'yes sir's kings his checkers, watch the double jump."

LOL, blame the movies/media! It's the spaghetti westerns, not the Marilyn Manson!! haha that line is a clever stab at the media fear mongerers. That checkers analogy for the shooter is pure genius.. Especially that *click click* sound yeu hear for the double jump.

"Back with a platter of hot leeches that'll drink up-every bloody drop down to the last diseases, "

And now he takes a stab at the news media, and how they handle these stories, and feed off the bloodshed - over-reporting these stories to boost ratings, neglecting to aknowledge that a lot of the culprits seem to have done it for the notoriety.. Obviously Cho (virginia tech shooter) was looking for notoriety; he sent a frickin package to NBC!

"it's A-E-S-O-P-R-O-C-K, the peak twister. Defender of the son of Vaughn Bode's Cheech Wizard."

haha, what a dork! Ya'll know Cheech Wizard right? An underground comic of a Wizard that looks like a mushroom, it's weird shit.

"I used to pray the treatments got easier with my aging like serotonin weekends were merely comedic hazing. Wrong, "

'serotonin weekends' seems to be referencing parties with an abundance of drugs.. 'were merely comedic hazing, wrong' could mean.... like looking back with 20/20 hindsight that such a way to spend your weekends was not the best way to experience life and earn your way into the fraternity of life, or whatever...

"but along his travels located the key to world peace: kill every motherfucker but me."

I absolutely love this line! It shows the hypocracy behind starting wars for freedom/peace, which ties us back into the first verse of the song that's primarily about soldiers. But there's also an obvious analogy too to the school shooter as well. Perhaps hinting at the wider theme of the song that puts tho two verses together. Violence of human nature?

"You cool with that? Cool. Bang. You? Cool. Hang. You? No? Uh... bang? Cool. Sorry, dog, rules is rules. And too long have I followed yours."

LOL! Executing the key to world peace here! Love it! The first two people I guess wanted to die anyway, the next one, well haha sorry!

"I'm trying to get them years back, and walk through every cipher with dynamite in a beer hat."

And as though the song just wasn't amazingly cool already this last line is just straight dope. 'walk through every cipher' I think means he's commenting about the style of his raps, infact using a metaphor of 'dynamite in a beer hat' to describe his raps... Hiding something serious/explosive in the party's paraphernalia!

This song is really depressing. It's written in an amusing and entertaining fashion but the meaning is just about being really low and depressed. Thinking of death, and wondering who'll care, and if someone does care, will they just be happy he's gone.

That part about not procrastinating and taking a real look at oneself instead of just an imaginary one is a positive thing here: A
pep talk into getting up and doing something and positive introspection.

Not caring about yoru own inhibitions and rules and just living your life. The first verse is about overcoming sexual inhibitions, and learning this from a less inhibited woman "Relax and just be yourself" written accross her scalp.

The last verse might be about not conforming to society and just being youself. Hitting your head with a rock/wall of the jail... Alcatraz is nicknamed "The Rock" but i don't know if that was an intentional play on words.
