Said The Whale – Taking Abalonia Lyrics 18 years ago
"Swim a shore and rescue me
Build a ship and sail a sea
Start our very own country"

Abalonia was a WWII ship that was purchased in the 60s by a group of people who aimed to wreck the ship off the west coast by San Diego in hopes of founding their own country. Unfortunatly, strong waves moved the ship unexpectedly, and it sank to the bottom.

Said The Whale – Plans For The Future Lyrics 18 years ago
"The cream of the OREO"

This is such a good song. Its basically a lesson to 1) Never think you have it all figured out, because even the top minds dont. You'll always learn. 2) Dont wate your life away. Go out and do something with meaning. Get things done. Dont spend most of your day surfing the internet for lyrics and writing about them *cough* or playing video games the entire day.

Its a great song. Shame StW only tours Canada, and shame noone else has commented.

The Shins – New Slang Lyrics 18 years ago
A wise interpretation, insaneasianguy. You're very much welcome, Sara.

I recently set this as my ringer now that I finally updated my phone. I smile every time my phone rings and most of my friends do too. :)

The Shins – New Slang Lyrics 18 years ago
I signed up just to post about this song because I believe that a lot of you, though getting a lot of the exacts in the lyrics correct, you are misinterpreting the general feeling of the song.

To me, this is not a song about regret. Quite the contrary, it is really a happy song, as the melody would lead casual listeners to believe. To me, this song is about acceptance. Looking back on old times, smiling, remembering, loving. Letting your imagination just let loose and think of what could have happened. It isn’t as sad as direct lyric interpretation would lead you to believe, IMO.

Generally, as someone a while back said, that was the feeling conveyed, instead of trying to make a story out of it. Songs that have stories seem plastic in nature, so tangible and consumable that they aren’t worth as much. In other words, 'New Slang' is akin to a famous painting... it is one of a kind and open to tons of interpretation, it is not a photograph that can be mass produced and requires no interpretation at all. Regardless of what I just said though, Ill tell you what a few things mean to me. (**=Lyrics, --=interpretation)

**Gold teeth and a curse for this town were all in my mouth.
Only, i don't know how they got out, dear.
--To me, Gold Teeth are not a literal translation to that of age or status, but rather symbolize “Good Intent.” The protagonist never meant to say anything bad about the object, which doesn’t have to be taken literally as a town, but his feelings just came out one night, having been bottled up. If it is a town, I see it as a small town, not the opposite, but rather existential in nature… the feeling that you cannot escape a small town
**Turn me back into the pet that i was when we met.
I was happier then with no mind-set.
--Sometimes the best parts of any relationship, friendly, romantic, sexual, even family, are at the very beginning, where you can imagine what could become of it. Usually, it never lives up, and sometimes you miss the feeling that your imagination gave you when looking back.
**New slang when you notice the stripes, the dirt in your fries.
--Old slang is the vernacular, but it eventually becomes outdated. Eventually, as you grow older, as many have said, you realize things you never realized before. This includes historical context too, for example, a Medieval peasant did not care if there were dirt in his fries… or potatoes. He was glad to have some food. In a way, this could be condemning the lack of tolerance for anything but the best in today’s society. Additionally, note that fries come from potatoes, which grow within the dirt. This could be an illusion to the ‘seeds’ of yin and yang, that the fries hold a ‘seed’ of what they once were…. And how that is unacceptable.
**Hope it's right when you die, old and bony.
--I believe what is said here is just wishing that whoever this applies to, which in many interpretations seems to be an old love, lives a long life and dies peacefully.
**Dawn breaks like a bull through the hall,
--Many people hit the nail on the head here, dawn is realizing something about life that.. well, just sucks, and it hits you hard.
**Never should have called
But my head's to the wall and i'm lonely.
--Not nessicarilly to do with love. When one gets lonely, they turn to desperation, and cling to whoever, even people they know they should’nt.
**God speed all the bakers at dawn may they all cut their thumbs,
And bleed into their buns 'till they melt away.
--This was an anomaly that I couldn’t quite interpret, though I found both the ‘heart’ and ‘good luck’ theories appropriate.
**I'm looking in on the good life i might be doomed never to find.
Without a trust or flaming fields am i too dumb to refine?
--Sometimes we feel like we are just wandering blindly, forward into life. I believe the song’s repetitive feel adds only more to this. That feeling often leads you to feel that you are going nowhere in life, and you can end up blaming your own self for your –stupidity-, for not –trusting- your own intent to get off the path you are on, and burn the fields behind you.
**And if you'd 'a took to me like
A gull takes to the wind.
Well, i'd 'a jumped from my tree
Well i'd a danced like the king(queen) of the eyesores
And the rest of our lives would 'a fared well
--Once again, could pertain to love, but doesn’t have to. It could pertain to any deeper connection with a person, idea, even a song such as this. I see it as more of that greater understanding, then some neo-utopian ideal of being happy for eternity.

I wrote this rather tired, so if none of it makes sense, I apologize… just ask. Feel free to contact me via email or aim… I believe it is within the profile.
