Elliott Smith – Needle in the Hay Lyrics 18 years ago
ok. First of all, the fact that we are here, years after his death, still caring, still talking about his music and trying to decipher possible meanings to his lyrics, proves that this guy was something else. His music is pretty much relatable to everyone, as most of it deals with real life, not the recent onslaught of sythentic bullshit that constitutes as poetry and talent.

Whew. Anyway. This song, to me, is about extreme loyalty. It seems as if Elliott, is the one trying to help. I don't think he is the user, in this situation; he is the friend who is trying to save his drugged/fucked up buddy. "He's acting dumb..." How many times have you confronted someone, trying to tell them that something is messed up and have them basically tell you to do die in a fire? He knows that he cannot help his friend; yet still tries. The desperate repitition of needle in the hay, could imply that finding a "needle in a haystack" and convincing a friend that he has a problem involves a crazy amount of luck.

idk. thats my take on it. Still a breathtaking song. =)

Elliott Smith – Twilight (Somebody's Baby) Lyrics 18 years ago
One of the best songs I have ever heard. Ever.

In fact, I have no idea whether I even like "A Passing Feeling". Each time I listen to twilight...I just bliss out. And come back to life about halfway through the next song.

"Because your candle burns too bright, I almost forgot it was twilight"

Just...amazing

Elliott Smith – Looking Over My Shoulder Lyrics 18 years ago
It's astonishing how he stays almost completely calm while singing this, yet have such angry lyrics. Haunting.
My absolute favorite off of New Moon.

Elliott Smith – Cupid's Trick Lyrics 18 years ago
Love the song.

I always hear this song as: "Sugar lick me up. it's my lie". In the beginning, it's almost confessional, as it potrays a scene of someone who's "numb and in shock"--perhgaps after hearing that a close friend (Elliott) is in such pain?

It's as if Elliott has admitted some of his hardships to the people he cares about...and then realizes that by sharing just a fraction of his pain, he has hurt the people he loves. This is when he wishes that he could:

"reaching around to the hands of the clock" (aka turn back time?)

and instead tell pretty, sweet, lies to keep up appearences, so that no one would worry about him.

Also, notice the change in the music. The beginning is slow and almost mournful. but..it shifts to be angry and bitter. HE wishes so desperately that everyone would just leave him alone.

idk. This doesnt really explain the cupid's trick thing...unless its the love that his friends are trying to give him (even though he sees it as an attack?)

..sorry a bit sketchy. Much love and respect for Elliott.
