The debate about whether he was clean or not has no bearing on what this song 'means.' The year leading up to his suicide it is commonly believed he had kicked all but drinking. But, (if i'm not mistaken) this song is heard well before that in bootlegs but many of them still bear the 'mistaken fan title.' Sunshine certainly is slang for cocaine but I reject the claim that you should interpret it that way. Depending on something external to you to make you feel good, addiction in a word. He's perfectly encoded a facet of that into this song. |

| Bright Eyes works magic on this track. The version released on 'love nothing' is kind of Digital Ash esque, but if you can find the live acoustic performance he does of it is truly stunning. His verion is just under a minute. It's obvious listening to Simon Joyner's work that he has profoundly influenced the songwriting of Conor Oberst. | |
