Can't stop listening to this. Heartbreaking.

Vampire Weekend – Horchata Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree wholeheartedly with GentleDogs. This song isn't a narrative, it's meant to evoke a feeling of nostalgia. It's all about memory - doing something you used to do somewhere else, with someone else, and the memories it evokes. It shows how life changes so fast.

Bon Iver – Skinny Love Lyrics 17 years ago
Firstly, Justin wrote the lyrics after singing a melody along to the chords he had written. He translated the wordless singing into the lyrics that sounded most like the noises, while trying to express all his anger and hurt. So the lyrics are almost like a rorschach test.

Link to the treble interview in which he discusses this --> http://www.treblezine.com/features/143.html

But as for who he's addressing, I agree with Shelbzz. In my opinion this is Justin singing to his innermost self, or, to make it easier, his heart. He's not sure if it can last the rest of the year. He feels as if it is disappearing:

"Come on skinny love just last the year/
Pour a little salt we were never here"

Or dying, and falling apart ("staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer").

He's discovered that his heart doesn't have the capacity to love properly. And he's chastising himself for this inability. His logic keeps telling his heart to behave but his personality keeps getting in the way:

"I told you to be patient
I told you to be fine
I told you to be balanced
I told you to be kind"

So while his heart is the cause of all his misdeeds his person is the one left paying for them ("I'll be holding all the tickets/and you'll be owning all the fines").

When he gives everything, he is let down by the other person in the relationship and left feeling desolate and betrayed. When he holds back, the love never flourishes and becomes a paper-thin joke of a relationship.

At the end he realises that he will never really love:

"Who will love you?
Who will fight?
Who will fall far behind?"

Arcade Fire – Intervention (Original version) Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the album version is a far better developed version of this song, although the original recording sounds great in its raw state. I suppose they're really like two different songs.

Mic Christopher – Hey Day Lyrics 17 years ago
CLOM!! is right, Mic often said in his live shows that when he saw the word "Heyday" it was always used to denote a person's best work or best time of their life, and people would say it had now passed. Mic thought you should always live in the best time of your life, and always do your best work, and this song and album stands to him. Rest in peace Mic, and God bless you for the music you made.

regulus43, you've hit the nail on the head. I wonder why so few people have commented on BSP's songs? They're far too good to ignore.

Interpol – Pioneer to the Falls Lyrics 18 years ago
I thought it was very obvious that this song had a connection to the Fall from Heaven of the angels, like in Milton's Paradise Lost... After reading all the other interpretations some of them are also pretty satisfying (especially OredtapeO).

To put it quickly into context from my point of view --

It's like Lucifer feeling both the pain of betrayal and of necessary loss by turning away from all he had because he couldn't believe in it. The dirt pile is the death of the old ways. The praying is for the God and the Christianity here to be real (the "three stowaways").

The soul can wait because he's "not sold" on the idea, and not prepared to know pain's deceit - it outweighs the benefits of the fallacy.

"Always concealed, safe and alive inside" is a glimmer of hope that one day things may be right again.

So I think a loss of faith is central to the song. I know there is a definite personal romantic element as well but I can't help feeling I'm on to something!

Arcade Fire – The Well and the Lighthouse Lyrics 18 years ago
I think evangelon's interpretation is the best one here. cloud7's makes sense too but there's more in this album about the pain of faith and the weight of moral duty than repremanding people for falling into darkness. This feeling of being trapped is echoed in "My Body Is A Cage". Win's lyrics express the huge difficulty in coming to terms with your conscience in a world full of doubt. The only criticism Win seems to lay down is of hypocrisy, which we see in "Antichrist Television Blues".

David Bowie – The Man Who Sold the World Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is supposedly based on William Hughes Mearns' Antigonish, and concerned with paranoia and multiple personalities (David Buckley, "Strange Fascination - David Bowie"). That would fit in with Bowie's adopted artistic and performance identities like Ziggy, Halloween Jack, and so on. The uneasy atmosphere created in the song certainly echoes that of the poetry.

---------------------------------------------------
Antigonish:

As I was sitting in my chair,
I knew the bottom wasn't there,
Nor legs nor back, but I just sat,
Ignoring little things like that.

Tex Beneke is whistling (whistlewhistlewhistle)...
Glenn Miller: Hello there, Texas, whatcha say?
Are you whistling in the dark just to scare the ghost away?
Tex Beneke: I know there’s something following me that I can’t see
Someone sure laid an awful hex on me!
Glenn Miller: A hex? Ah, Tex, that’s pretty far-fetched.
Man, I’d say you’re just a little bit tetched!
Tex Beneke: You’d got a load of what I saw last night
You’d pass the Yankee Clipper on its maiden flight!

Last night I saw upon the stair
A little man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
Oh, how I wish he'd go away...

When I came home last night at three
The man was waiting there for me
But when I looked around the hall
I couldn't see him there at all!
Go away, go away, don't you come back any more!
Go away, go away, and please don't slam the door... (slam!)

Last night I saw upon the stair
A little man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
Oh, how I wish he'd go away!
