Here's my interpretation of the lyrics "Increase the dose, diminish the high" The more you take of something, the less it begins to appeal to you. The taste of something you enjoy very much begins to wear off when you've tasted it for the hundredth time. "Coughing up blood, with my mind on fire" Physical pain, and emotional/mental pain. "Juggling switchblades on a high tension wire" To me it means a deathwish, or just the desire to inflict self-harm as a means to distract from the emotional agony. "I don't have any scars, only dormant wounds that crack like fault lines" Never truly got over the hurt, and when some emotional upheaval or disturbance occurs, all the pain that was pressed down comes flooding back at once. "I only have five thoughts anymore and four of them are of you" 4 thoughts of the person who made him like this, and the last one is of death. For me, the lyrics are not about a relationship, but rather it deals with something of a much larger scope. "how many years have we waited for a ship that never set sail? and how many days have we wasted chasing a love that was not our own? i sat ashore and watched as one hopeless wave crashed upon another while my thoughts ran to the highest hills my heart never reached the sea with only delusions of an endless journey i am left with an ocean between you and me" To me, this verse is about pursuing a lifestyle and chasing after a goal that is determined by the expectations and desires of OTHER people, as opposed to yourself. The imagery of a person waiting for a ship to arrive and come save him serves as a metaphor for waiting for someone else to save you, instead of taking fate into your own hands. "the gate to my heart has been weld shut with the splendor of my aspirations closed in how many years have we waited for a ship that never set sail? and how many days (how many days) have we wasted (have we wasted) chasing a love that was not our own?" In the second verse, the person most likely doesn't want to, or can't pursue his goals. And he regrets the time he has wasted in trying to live up to other people's expectations and be the person they want him to be. "is this your salvation? is this all you can give? i will not stand in reflection of someone else’s dream" The chorus is basically about the person's dissatisfaction with pursuing the lifestyle other people want him to pursue, and his wanting to break free of those ties. This is a very beautiful song, and quite possibly my favorite on the entire album. :D. Great stuff. |

You have no right to make that statement unless you’ve got the proof to back it up. Manson has never dumbed himself down to the mainstream. Sure, his musical style has changed throughout the years but are change and evolution not essential when writing albums? That is not called selling out, and if you believe it is, then you’re a retarded shit. I’m looking at you Diabolic666. How can you say that Manson ripped off Trent Reznor’s lyrical style? If you took the time to examine the lyrics Manson and Trent have written, you’ll discover a distinct difference between them. Just take a look the lyrics to this song and Nine Inch Nail’s song “Hurt”. Are the lyrical styles the same? I don’t think so. The same goes with stealing Alice Cooper’s image. Manson is influenced by the shock rock image of Alice Cooper, but in no way is he simply ripping it off. Don’t come to quick judgments and have no proof to back it up, dumbass. The music business is still a music business, and the only way to really make a profit for the bands without taking too much risk is conforming and fitting in to the scene However, I don’t think Manson taking potshots at MCR is entirely justifiable. It may be true that MCR is influenced by Manson, in terms of shock and theatrical elements. However, their lyrical styles and content, along with their music is very different. Maybe not worlds apart, but they still come under the “rock” umbrella. I find the lyrics to this song very well-written. They are very venomous and are rife with sarcastic wit, partially why I enjoy Manson’s music so much. All in all, a good song. |

Seeing that no one else pointed this out yet, I'm going to take a stab at this and make an interpretation that's quite different than the previous ones. In my opinion this song is about the lifestyles of bands. Many bands often spend months, and maybe even years on the road touring. Its seldom that they see their families and only ever so often that they get to be with them in between touring and recording new songs. Although there are no lines that directly hint at that, but in my opinion, that could also be another meaning. |
