Radiohead – Weird Fishes/Arpeggi Lyrics 16 years ago
In my opinion this song has several things which indicate that this is love song, perhaps not in the traditional sense about someone gushing over someone else, but rather the search for love. Like the saying goes, “there are many fish in the sea”, and we are all weird little fishes searching for that true love, that love which trumps all others.

In the deepest ocean
The bottom of the sea
Your eyes, they turn me

This is the very instant that he/she catches a glimpse of that person across the room, amongst all the other people (the sea of fishes). This begins the relationship, which in my head is a crazy hot night in a hotel somewhere. There is also the idea of seeing this fish on the bottom of the sea, does bottom mean a place which they would not think to meet this other fish, or perhaps it means a “bad” place either in reality or mentally for the narrator.

Why should I stay here?
Why should I stay?

Apparently there is another fish with which the narrator is involved and post coital he/she questions/analyzes that relationship, comparing it with this new one, which although very brief, holds much allure, so much potential. Could this be it, the one true love that they have been searching for?

I'd be crazy not to follow
Follow where you lead
Your eyes, they turn me

These lines are the thoughts which outweigh all others, if this could be it (true love), then “I’d be crazy not to follow”, follow you until I know. “Your eyes turn me”, that allure is still there and bright as ever.

Sunk without a trace
The bottom of the deep
Your eyes, they turn me

This is likely referring to the place where the narrator is currently, the same place as referenced in the second line of the first verse, they are at the bottom, those eyes still attracting them. I guess it could also be viewed as the fish making the decision to follow, and once made they let down all walls, they are giving it, the try for love, everything they have and so they let themselves sink into it, letting themselves go be absorbed fully. The reason why the first interpretation is better is because the bottom in the first interpretation is referring a bad place or state of mind within the narrators’ world, which is a more consistent view of the “bottom” throughout the song. If we were to take the second interpretation then all of a sudden the sea becomes love and the bottom is the deepest part of that love.

Turn me into phantoms

The turn me into phantoms line is a tough one, but perhaps it means that they wish to leave their body, again fully giving into the feeling, floating up from the bottom. Another thought is that it could mean that they wish not to be seen by anyone or escape from normal life so that they can be free to follow without distraction.

I’ll follow you to the edge of the earth
And fall off

Again, affirming that they are committed fully, they will go the distance even if it means they get hurt.

Everybody leaves
If they get the chance
And this is my chance

Everyone leaves whatever partner they have if they think they have found a chance for something better, truer, the ultimate love.

I get eaten by worms
And weird fishes
Picked over by the worms

Worms to me can signify parasites, bottom feeders, things that feed on dead or decaying things. Perhaps what this is saying that the chance for love failed and that person did follow to the edge and fell off, meaning they did not find it love and that relationship failed. They then sank to the bottom, dead, being eaten by worms, because they are emotionally dead. Besides the symbolic dead fish “worms” could also mean a persons thoughts after the affair or new relationship has ended. You are eaten by your own thoughts for a while after everything sinks in aren’t you. Questioning everything that happened, why you left the other person, etc. These worms stick with you for a while eating at you.

Weird fishes
Weird fishes
Weird fishes

Yes, we are strange little fish.

And I hit the bottom
The bottom of escape
Escape
I hit the bottom
Hit the bottom to escape
Escape
Escape

Again, having some trouble with this one. I feel like hitting the bottom here could mean a few things. One is that they turn to something (drugs, alcohol, any coping method) to take away the pain, stay at the bottom. If I choose to interpret it this way then that means that the sea is a state of mind, perhaps giving up the search for a time.

Anyway, I am sure this song can be interpreted many ways, that is just my take for now.

NOFX – Monosyllabic Girl Lyrics 16 years ago
I liked ENi's interpretation that she is stupid, but super attractive, good in the sack, rich, or something else good. I guess it could also just be that she is quirky like that and he loves that about her. Either way it is a goody IMO.

Department of Eagles – In Ear Park Lyrics 17 years ago
My interpretation->

All of us walk a long steady line
And now that you're gone I've nothing but time
To walk with your bags down to the docks
Sit in the grass Right in your spot In Ear Park
In Ear Park
And if you listen you'd hear the waves, Ahhhhh
Ahhhhh
But we all forgot dear
But we can't forget dear

All the time
All the time
All the time
All the time
All the time

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is definitely one of my favorites of all time. It is musically perfect IMO, well at least the live version. The album version is too stripped down and so you miss some of the beauty.

I think all people know that In Ear Park is dedicated to Daniel Rossen's father, who passed away in 2007. Therefore, it is safe to approach this album from that vantage point. Generally speaking I would have to say that it is about remembrance. To ensure that memories of his father are kept alive and are not forgotten, which is akin to allowing their father to figuratively die in the families’ hearts ("we can't forget dear").

All of us walk a long steady line <- the line is life with an ending and beginning, everyone lives everyone dies

Now that you're gone I've nothing but time <- there is only time for remembrance of times past, time for new memories has past

To walk with your bags down to the docks <- again, recalling the past, the bags/stuff are not his father that he is taking or going with, but his bags which are all that is left, stuff and places.

Sit in the grass Right in your spot, In Ear Park <- places and things are all that remains of his father, going to these spots of places can help keep the memories stronger.

And if you listen you'd hear the waves <- He grew up in LA, and so I imagine that this place or the places which he remembers his father always have the sound of waves

But we all forgot dear <- time passing can make memories fade
But we can't forget dear <- Don't make light of forgetting memories of him, for that is all that is left. We must cherish them, we must not forget.

All the time <- All the time you must remember, you cannot let the memories fade. Memories are what keep people alive in the hearts and minds, and so to let them die would be to let the person die completely.

So, that is my take, wrong or right, the song is amazing.

Cat Power – Wealthy Man Lyrics 17 years ago
Slight mod to the other posted lyrics:

Oh I see, sunny days
Oh I go that far
When the night is over
Will you tell me that you've always been thinking of me

Indirectly you say to me the hand of a night is not a hand for me
That's the most said I've ever heard from another man
A wealthy man
That's the most said I've ever heard from another man
A wealthy man

Oh I still see sunny days
Oh I go that far
You and the night is dragging on
Maybe I will dream that you would tell me
You 've always been thinking of me

Indirectly you say to me
The hand is not a hand for me
Indirectly you say again the hand of the night is not a
hand for me

That's the most said i've ever heard
From another man
A wealthy man
That's the most said i've ever heard
From another man
A wealthy man

Radiohead – Up on the Ladder Lyrics 18 years ago
macaque's lyrics are closest although one thing is that, the first line of the last four verses is this, "up on the ladder out of time to escape" or possibly it is as screenvalue writes it. In any case you are missing those lyrics.

I do feel that it is possilby about Tony Blair, or perhaps is more general towards a few of the worlds current leaders which all appear to be puppets. The ladder is what they had to climb to get where they are today(in power). Now that they are where they wanted to be, it seems useless, and they perhaps feel powerless just puppets. All people on the ladder are the fucking same, they are all disconnected from the people.

Radiohead – 4 Minute Warning Lyrics 18 years ago
Another reference to communism (4 minute warning), as in bangers and mash (little red book). Although I do not necessarily know that this reference was truly meant here, but rather it was something that was known due to the fact that it is a British system.

THis basic thought on this song is that it is another commentary about the current state of affairs meaning the powers that be and thier effect on our lives. The ignorance of the people who do not want to "wake up" and would rather remain blinded by the media and propoganda system currenlty in place.

The song is saying wake the fuck up people before it is to late. Let this song be a warning, and don't say I didn't tell you. Open your eyes.

Radiohead – Bangers + Mash Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree that it is referecing government and statewide corruption. Again, Radiohead's views on the state and those in current power is always described in this fashion. The very first song on this album is of a similar thread.

The poison is that taste, and once people get a taste for that power, it corrupts. The little red book is a refernce to Red Book of Mao's Communist regiem as stated by steinbeckthepearl. THerefore, everyone is dancing to the words of the ruler. The ruler who is atop the pyramid, and will be taken down eventually. The whole system will crumble due to individual accountability. Again, "similar to down is the new up".

Radiohead – Go Slowly Lyrics 18 years ago
Correction to eatenbyworms lyris:

The correct lyrics are:

Over here (or Oh Maria)
Come slowly
Come slowly to me
I've been waiting
Patient
Patiently

I didn't care
But now i can see
That there's a way out
There's a way out [repeat 3 more times]

Who knows, it is very ambiguous. Defintley reference to relationship strains of some type. Given time they can understand the other person's feelings and realize that they were in the wrong and not seeing things clearly. SInce they are the person who wronged they had to wait until the other party was ready to make amends and wait patietnly. There is a way out of this of this conflict, they have realized how to right the wrong.

Radiohead – Last Flowers Lyrics 18 years ago
Personally, it seems that it is referecing an aging persons struggle late in life. Appliances have gone berserk, an old person does not know how the hell to interact with even commen place appliacnes anymore.

It is as if the person is always getting in the way, "treading on people's toes" and when the toes upon. The young kids and young people, their own children who are moving fast, they are the spoiled snot nosed punks who are not respecting.

If you take me there you will get relief, either referce to a "home" or the hospital where they will die, reference to the song title, last flowers to the hospital.

Relief for all parties, the old person from the hectic life and for the younger generation in whose way the aging generation was getting.

I cannot face the evening straight actually seems to reference the drugs which they have to take becuase of the pain they are in. They want them to take them to the hospital to die heavily medicated. Again, relief for all.

The lines about listening is the aging generations plea to listen to reason and simply do "this" for them, help them die in peace. It is good for everyone.

Radiohead – Down Is the New Up Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with Black Sativa, it is refrencing the social contorl via the state/media and powers that be. "Your services are no longer required"", a refernce to the fact that individuals are no longer in control, but that the propoganda system is in control and only it has the current relevant information. "You're so last week", no need to listen to any naysayers as they are talking about something that the government has likley already covered up using language to obfuscate/contort meaning or to eliminate new ideas/thought and their meanings that are deemed dangerous to the state. Amputate is a reference to the governments need to dissasociate itself with events viewed as negative by society, perhaps place blame on a scopegoat.

Candid camera being a chink in the armor seems to be referecing that things viewed are very powerful, candid meaning non-state controlled media showing truth. Once the chink is in the armor this can lead to revolution/topsy-turvy-town. No one trusts anymore.

One last note, is about turning the pockets out. In the case of a revolution society will look for individulas to hold accountable for the lies/manipulation. Perhaps this is referecing the individuals who are being looked at for thier personal actions, if in fact they were part of the machine that is the state. They need to show that they have nothing to hide and had nothing to do with it.

Elliott Smith – Waltz #1 Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about the aftermath of a relationship. Elliot reminescing about the dance, that is a relationship.

"Every time of Day" - He cannot stop thinking about this failed relationship

"Darkens down and goes away" - The thoughts of this failed relationship derpress him as the hours of the day pass bye without finding meaning/answers.

"Pictures open in my head of me and you silent and cliche"

The only thoughts of the relationship are of silence and void of all feeling.

"All the things we did and didn't say"

Dwelling on the negative words said that damanged the realtionship and positive words that could have possibly remedied the situation, but remained upspoken.

" Covered by what we did and didn't do"

When words didn't work they resorted to trying other methods like sex or going out to cover up emotional shortcomings, but it didn't. Things they didn't do may possibly mean meaningful things/situations which a normal healthy relationship includes, progression of the relationship emotinal growth.

"Going through every out I used to Cope to make the repatition stop"

He tried his best to keep the relaitonship on track, but nothing he did worked. He ponders why, they didn't work.

"What was I supposed to say"

What could he have said or done differently to save it. He sings this very solmely blaming himslef for failure and knowning he could not find the answer. He thinks he failed and is desparate to find reason for the failure. Posibly in hopes of alleviating guilt.

" Now I never leave my zone"

WIth this verse he is sepaking again as if he was back in the relationship, speaking of how bad it was in the end. He put up a wall and he would not let her through it not matter what, it was hopeless at this point.

"We're both alone, I am going home"

Again speaking of the last hours of the relationship. They had both given up, both had walls up and felt more alone with eachother then without.

"I wish I had never seen your face"

Apparently this relationship got so bad that Elliot thinks in this case it was better to have never loved at all, then lost.
