Just a little background info, straight from the mouth of AD himself (get a copy of the 8-18-06 Tinle Park Illinois bootleg and you'll hear for yourself) The song is about falling in love with the girl on the movie screen. (fairly obvious) The last part tells about them going out to Pioneer Town to play at Happy and Harriet's Pioneer Town Palace for the Cosmic American Blues festival in memory of the late Gram Parsons. He said they played under more stars than you could possible imagine. (BTW, Pioneer Town is a place where they used to film all sorts of old western movies) Another side note, somehow a mutual friend of AD and Monica Potter hooked them up and they dated for a little while. When they were first introduced, the CCs played this song and she burst into tears saying it was the nicest thing anyone had ever done for her. But in the end "sometimes they turn out to be nothing like they are on the movie screen" and they broke up. |

I've always felt that this song is about how he (or other stars) seemed to sleepwalk into their stardom. The music video sort of gave me that impression, though I haven't seen it in a while. And I doubt that any of this is about his upbringing or his father. He's denied that anything on this album is about that, and that he had a fairly normal childhood. |
