The Verve – The Drugs Don't Work Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm really glad for nathebastard's comment just now.
For me, it's incomprehensible that anyone could think this is about non-prescription / illegal drugs. It's written in such a strong me-to-you perspective, "you are dying, I am grieving, you are on drugs, I'll sing in your ear" that it's hard (for me anyway) to take the "they just make you worse" line as self-reflecting.

Makes me wonder why people's mind just jump to illegal drugs. Have they forgotten that drugs also means medicine, or are they biased because of Ashcroft appearance and reputation?

After Forever – Sins of Idealism Lyrics 17 years ago
I love how After Forever take other people's real problems and transform them into lyrics and songs.
It may be art to convey your own feelings onto others, but to understand other people's feelings, that goes beyond.

euphemism (countable and uncountable; plural euphemisms)

(uncountable) The use of a word or phrase to replace another and that is considered less offensive or less vulgar than the word or phrase it replaces.

I'm sure you'll now say that wiktionary isn't a reliable source of information, but this is a different kind of discussion ... want to take it to a different board? :)

Matisyahu – Candle Lyrics 18 years ago
I've been looking for the lyrics to this song .. there's a lot more than just these four lines, but can't find them anywhere. Seems to be some Hebrew in there too. Anyone who can point me to some more complete lyrics?

Cake – Satan Is My Motor Lyrics 18 years ago
... someone explain to me how sex = satan :\
do we have confirmation that cake thinks this way?

... for me the "underlying motive = sex" thing doesn't really work, because "under my hood is internal combustion (... power, i hear)" seems to hint at something far worse than sex. if sex is bad in the first place!
the sum of humanity's ugly sides seems a more likely candidate for "satan".

the more i think about it, the more i start to believe that this song could be read in conjunction with "Mexico".
It's like in this song, this girl is totally in love with him, and he's trying to remind her that he's only human ("sure I'm nice, I bring you flowers, I have nothing but good intentions, but there's bad traits right under the hood!").
In "Mexico", this has not worked, the girl has fallen completely in love, started worshipping him, and he has to let her go.

Cake – Open Book Lyrics 18 years ago
what LaChoy said.
Cake has more songs about relationships than most bands would be able to justify, but they always come with insightful lyrics.
This guy wants a girl who has a pretty complete image of herself and what she wants from life. What she is writing is her own life story, and she wants a man who will achieve those goals with her.
The "you" in the song is a guy who is probably not thinking of those goals - likely he has other ones, possibly his career. But he wants this girl. They are very much attracted to eachother and he thinks the way to conquest is clear, she's an open book to him, he knows her inside and out ... or so he thinks.

And he gets a few surprises in his courting attempt.

Līve – Pillar Of Davidson Lyrics 18 years ago
you guys all together nailed this pretty well ...

it's both the drudgery of factory work, and the love of God that will save the workers.
Very clever of Live to make the "Caterpillar" and "Harley Davidson" names into a metaphor for Jesus, the Pillar, David's (great grand) Son.

Līve – Freaks Lyrics 18 years ago
I think Ballzofsno is definitely on to something. This is about the fears and inhibitions that men can have when faced with a woman who loves them and a possibility of a relationship.
Kowalczyk's comments that these lyrics are purely from subconscious agree with that view, in my opinion.
"The mother", I think, is not the addressed person's mother. The text is not "your mother" after all. More likely "the mother" is a woman held in high regard (the Virgin Mary comes to mind), perhaps an older woman than the usual fling, who has expectations of a relationship.
If this is the case, then the very fact that she is interested in him, the "little fucker" as the addressed person no doubt sees himself, brings her down from her pedestal and makes him want to call her a freak in panic.

hmm ... nah ... that doesn't make sense to me. you only have to listen to Nugget to know that Cake doesn't shy from swearing. And "a 4-letter word" is a VERY well known euphemism for swear word :P

Also trust me ... when someone says that to you ... "I just want to be your friend"... you don't hear love. You hear "scroo you I hate you but I'm trying to put it nicely", as other people said already.

Also, has anyone considered that the last four letters of FRIEND, i.e. IEND, are pronounced END? Hence, "End is the only part of the word that I heard".... you can spell "end" I-E-N-D in this case ;)

Cake – Friend Is A Four Letter Word Lyrics 18 years ago
Oh gods.
When I first heard this song, I, as some others, thought it was about the speaker disliking the person using the word "friend", perhaps thinking them a cheating lying ... nasty person.

Now that I'm in this very situation myself, I can see that it's indeed about the end of a relationship.
She (he in my case) says, "I'm happy just being friends. I'm still your friend, really, honestly." The reason "friend" is a four-letter word here is because when someone uses it in that way, it is a FRIEND-ing slap in the FRIEND-ing face. That's what it feels like.

The part about fishing for the words makes particular sense to me. The guy I was halfway involved with (not a full-fledged relationship, thank the gods) was not sure how he felt about me for a long long time, and now that he's saying let's just be friends, I wonder whether he really likes me more but doesn't want to get a relationship, or really just wants to be friends, or feels guilty for FRIEND-ing me and just wants to "be there for me".

At the moment I can't even hear this song without bursting into tears.
