Built to Spill – The Plan Lyrics 17 years ago
"They make it seem like it is so complicated, but in truth it only takes common sense to figure out what the worlds problems and their solutions are."

I wouldn't say that, exactly. I think the song is saying that everyone makes plans to try to fix the world, but these plans never work out and only make things worse. It's evident that the cause is a variety of bad plans, but we can't see the remedy because our only answer is to make more plans. Once you step back, it becomes common sense that your plans are meaningless and have no effect on the universe as a whole. You think you can shape the world, but you're too small to affect the world.

Not that this is what I think BtS meant or intended, but I think it's one way to view the song.

Modest Mouse – A Life of Arctic Sounds Lyrics 18 years ago
I feel the song is mainly about regret. Each of the three sections are rather distinct, and all are about regret of some kind. The first two are pretty obvious.

The last section, with the goddamned, could just be saying that everyone has regrets. The guy that gets to the top and writes his name on the sun has regrets and is as damned as the guy that generally stays alone and prefers the arctic sound. And the same is true for everyone in between-the sad comedians.

Not that I expect this is what Brock intended, but it's kinda what I get from it. For tonight, anyway.

Modest Mouse – Black Blood and Old New Agers Lyrics 18 years ago
Holy shit... my friend gave me this song and we used it as credit music for a film of ours more than four years ago, and I never knew until now that it's a Mouse song. Fucked up.

Modest Mouse – I Came as a Rat (Long Walk Off a Short Dock) Lyrics 18 years ago
It's interesting... I never thought of "You'll never die and you'll never grow old" to mean that he's referring to the belief in an eternal afterlife. I always saw it as a sarcastic line; people are wasting their lives, pushing everything to tomorrow, as if they'll never die or they'll never grow old.

But then, I think that's because I originally thought he said, "I don't know what I've been told, but you'll never die and you'll never grow old." I guess the first 'but' changes the whole meaning.

Oh, and the song rocks. The opening is fantastic, and the way he 'sings' (more like states) the rest is great. Especially, "Takes a long time, but God dies too."

Modest Mouse – Make Everyone Happy/Mechanical Birds Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't know why, but when I was listening to the last couple minutes of this song the other day, I felt like it was the sound of life. I wasn't high or anything, though I was extremely bored at work. It's beautiful and hectic and stuff is happening all around you... I just felt like, if someone asked me what life "sounds like" or to describe life through sound, I would point to the last half of this song.

I probably should get high one day and see how it sounds then. I suspect my brain will explode.

Modest Mouse – March Into the Sea Lyrics 18 years ago
I think onechad pretty much got it. Evolution has led us to be the dominant species, but modern society is now fighting evolution. Natural selection doesn't work when you have the power to keep everyone alive and breeding. Despite how far evolution has brought us and how generous the planet has been, we're stupid enough to try to march back to the sea. We're dumber than our genetic ancestors in that we've fallen out of equilibrium with nature.

And I agree that, at times, the song is from the POV from the planet, which I think basically gives up on us and says, "Alright, fine, you want to destroy yourselves? Fucking do it: March on." And the planet/nature is giving up on us because we treat it so salty and mean. Some people may talk about improving our treatment of the planet, but it's just politics; they'll keep shaking hands until their hands are gone and the planet is gone. The idea comes full-circle with Invisible.

And best line of the whole song: "Drag me out of the sea and teach me to breath!" The way he sings it, being out of breath himself, is perfect.

Modest Mouse – Lives Lyrics 18 years ago
try mentioned this on the first page, and it's the aspect of the song I really like: It starts out depressing, as there's really no hope. You'll never be happy. Then the person has an epiphany and remembers that he only has one life and needs to live it as best as he can. And after talking about how hard it is to remember this fact... he forgets and returns to being depressed.

Modest Mouse – 3rd Planet Lyrics 18 years ago
So, obviously, a kickass song. And though I think it can be taken lots of ways, people mentioned the creation/evolution debate in Stars are Projectors, which got me to thinking about this song. Though I doubt it's what Brock was really going for, I think the bulk of this song is about a Christian view of the world versus a scientific view.

Ignoring the opening verses for now, the song has a very religious section that I think describes a literal Genesis creation story well enough (or, really, the banishment from Eden). The 3 and not just 2 line has already been mentioned as referring to God's relationship with Adam and Eve. And, obviously, they're naked. And that is how the world began, with God+Adam+Eve. And that's how the world will end, with Jesus+husband+wife. The world begins and ends by God's command/the opening and closing of the Bible.

I'm convinced that the next section just has to be about a scientist's view of the world, starting with a scientific view of early life. A third planet was created and the first life developed in the oceans and had no sex. And the next line really stuck out to me: "It occured to me." That's the scientific method; you analyze data and conclusions come upon you. The rest of the section is about the patterns we now see in the universe through science: organisms live in our body just like fish live in the oceans. And he's of course not trying to suggest the actual shape of the universe (as I understand it, current data suggests it is "flat"), but that the universe (time, reality, whatever you want to call it) goes around in circles. Everything will eventually happen again. That should be a pretty easy metaphor for everyone to figure out.

I also think that the first line is spoken from God's POV, along with the Heart felt good section. Modest Mouse has called God an ass quite a few times now, so saying that his only talent is fucking people over makes sense to me. And the Heart section is from God's POV, reflecting upon his creation of man. This would mean that the 3rd planet (Eye in the sky) section is from the scientist, reflecting upon religious beliefs. As for the boss quitting the job, umm... Brock was drunk.

...I don't know, you figure that line out!

So yeah, probably not what was intended, but I think it's a valid interpretation of the bulk of the song. For the record, I really dislike the miscarried child idea. And again, awesome song. I would say it was my favorite MM song, but that changes every day. Seriously.
