Can anyone here say "The Crying Game"?

Honeyhoney – Little Toy Gun Lyrics 17 years ago
Wow.

Is it just me or does anyone else think that "little toy gun" is some serious innuendo there?

Also, I think the lyric is "kind of girl", not "count of girl". Accents are a pain. XD

The Fray – How To Save A Life Lyrics 17 years ago
To me, this song is more proof that every song is a love song.

I've read the website, i know what it's really about, but I kid you not, this song more or less perfectly mirrors my breakup with my boyfriend.

The first and second stanzas more or less mirror our breakup conversation. The third stanza is more or less the talk I had six months later, after I realised I regretted leaving him and wanted him back. Well, he found someone else while I had been gone and told me it just wasn't the same anymore. Broke my heart too.

Amazing how songs can be almost anything you want them to be.

Coldplay – Viva la Vida Lyrics 17 years ago
The feel of this song is one of a significant loss that one has yet to get over.

The lyrics suggest someone who used to have some form of self importance or self worth and lost it. The religious references could suggest a loss of faith, or it could be a metaphor for losing love.

Either way, the song invokes a sense of regret, and at times irony or false optimism. At times the lyrics make attempts to put a positive spin on loss (Just a puppet on a lonely string/
Oh who would ever want to be king?) but the lack of closure in the melody, along with the focus on the past and the fatalism in the refrain (I know Saint Peter won't call my name.... But that was when I ruled the world) suggests that there is still regret, or at the very least sadness, at having lost the world.

Animal Collective – Cuckoo Cuckoo Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree with hojumcchang, but the song could mean any one of those things taken individually. It's definitely a song about loss and grief.

To me, at least, this song is about breaking up with someone you loved, regretting it when you realise that you'll never have anyone like them again and then coming back to find they've already moved on. Yeah, that's a very personal interpretation but everyone else took all the obvious ones. XD

Carole King – Now and Forever Lyrics 18 years ago
One of the most beautiful songs ever... I doubt it needs any explanation beyond what it is.

Jellyfish – The Ghost at Number One Lyrics 18 years ago
All songs mean different things to different people, so I might not have the answer. But this is my understanding.

I think the song describes a struggling artist whose work is brilliant but is hard pressed to make a name for himself and is frequently misunderstood. The refrain "How does it feel to be the only one that knows that you're right?" describes his frustration after having put so much into his work but have it pass over everyone's heads. He experiences a brief stint of popularity and builds a fanbase but never amounts to anything more than a one hit wonder despite the fact that his work is good ("up at the address all the widows write" suggests that when his popularity ends the only fan letters he gets are from little old ladies, people whose lives are waning along with his career). He is "deep down underground", suggesting that his work is both deep and obscure. Thus, 'the Ghost at Number One' is a metaphor for every singer, songwriter, poet or artist whose career is defined by one chart topping single before fading away. Actually, it's ironically a good description of Jellyfish themselves, who made quite a few excellent songs, but sadly fell apart too soon.

Anyway, that's just my take on the song. I'd go into a line by line analysis but I doubt that either myself or any of you have the patience for one at the moment. ^^
