| I think "I'm just aghast/I'm not a part" should instead be "I'm just a guest/I'm not a part" | |

Jay, I think you are onto something. However, I think it's more than that. Little Michael; I think the lyrics really capture the slipping away of life that can go along with indulging in what at the beginning seems like not that bad of a habit... but not in a cheezy, trite way. The tone of the song is so believeable, and the music (especially the plonky piano) goes along quite well with the narrative. I think this ties in with the song cycle very well; the motif of escapism, the divide between feeling real feelings and denying/refusing them... I like the juxtaposition of this song- the dreamy, happy melody and the sad sad story it tells. Just right. |

She spills the jack and coke, not him, so I don't think the big meaning of the song is that he's turned to alcohol. Put on an argyle sweater and put on a smile-- he's putting on things, dressing up to try to be someone he's not, which is mirrored by his stilted pretending day, which is a sad image indeed... I like sleep forever's comments too. |

| The National – Mr. November Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Blue Blood and Great White Hope are both movies that deal with sports, and an underdog type situation. Now, Blue Blood, a horse racing movie that is old, is not really so inspiring because apparently the horse doesn't win... But I think that the cheerleaders comment and November being high school football playoff time points toward the sports hero imagery... I don't think it's just a song about sports, but I think the imagery and the universality of that feeling is key to what makes this song r o c k. | |
