| Modest Mouse – Parting of the Sensory Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| all organic bodies are chemically based around Carbon. the element. the song refers to that. when any organism dies, everything it's composed of is used by something else. carbon is the basis of all organic chemistry. there's nothing alive that doesn't contain carbon. | |

also, it's "they made the comment in jest." and it's "doesn't mean sweet fuck all" in the last verse. |

| Amanda Palmer – The Point of It All Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
it's about a depressed friend who she's propped up for so long. the movie melancholia does a fantastic job of depicting just how physically debilitating depression can be. in fact i never would've thought of it if i hadn't seen the movie recently. but i think it's about a depressed friend who's been held up and strung along for a long time. The dimensions taken refer to tests done by doctors. the last verse is about putting this friend in an institution. the stable address and what not. although this has no bearing, i like the image of some men coming into the house saying they have to take some dimensions and beating up this comatose friend/roommate/partner. just a sick little scenario. |

| Manic Street Preachers – She Is Suffering Lyrics | 13 years ago |
| "she" is beauty. as any beautiful woman knows, they exist within the shadow. they are a beautiful woman long before they are a human being on any level. and it goes the other way too. one who is ugly will also live within the shadow of beauty, though as something cast aside for a better thing. also the sad beauty that populates noir films. a vine that can strangle the life from a tree. these women are beautiful and because of it have been thrust into situations that suffocate them. beauty is a curse, drawing all attention, good and bad, and also scorning everything around it that's less beautiful, simply by being. i read that the band was unsure of this song and felt it had misogynist tones, but i wholeheartedly disagree. it feels like an objective view (of beauty) which belongs to someone entirely occupied with his own shit and, (this is incorrect, but it gets the point across most easily.) ironically, making himself beautiful. | |
| Screaming Females – Wild Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
I realized in record time I know I can’t change You’ve been my blood And that’s enough I know I can’t change But that’s why I need you to know It’s wild and cured I still hear you Up in my room You echo up the stairs You claw the door And leave a mark And then you’re not there But that’s why I need you to know I’m trying It’s wild but they found a cure Hold your hand On my head You can watch me hold the bed And I’ll pretend to be asleep You may claim to me you're gold But I’m not yours to have or hold You take all that’s left of me I need you to know I’m trying It’s wild but they found a cure A plume of smoke A family ghost Shows me all her teeth The brightest white Like heaven’s light Planting all it’s seeds I'm walking through our home that sounds a bit closer to the truth. mostly just basic typing corrections. |

| Hole – Doll Parts Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
it's about kurt. specifically living in his shadow. they really want you is referring to kurt's popularity. while she was just there, acknowledged but not particularly cared for. when the whole world thinks your husband is this great person and they hate you it will make you bitter. also, if the album was released 4 days after kurt's death then it was definitely recorded long before then. it has nothing to do with his death, it's about their relationship with each other and with the public. someday you will ache like i ache. she's bitter. she wants him to ache. and someday he may have. i'd say that she was proven right, but not in the way she intended. and as far as the courtney killing kurt thing goes. she didn't shoot him. but if this song is any indication, their private relationship may not have been very healthy. it's hard to be in a relationship with somebody who's envious of you and bitter about what you have. and it may have factored into his decision. but we'll never know for sure. |

| Pink Floyd – One of My Turns Lyrics | 14 years ago |
|
"Day after day, love turns grey Like the skin of a dying man Night after night, we pretend it's all right But I have grown older and You have grown colder and Nothing is very much fun any more." it's about his wife. their love is dying as the days go by, yet they go on as if nothing is wrong, as many do. he's older now (they got married young), and he's changed, and she's grown colder, she doesn't care about him anymore. "And I can feel one of my turns coming on. I feel cold as razor blade Tight as a tourniquet Dry as a funeral drum" his temper is about to break, simple as that. the next whole segment, the loud half of the song, is still directed at his wife. these are the things he'd like to say to his wife, in order to finally express his feelings. "Run to the bedroom, in the suitcase on the left You'll find my favorite axe" this line could mean that he's planning to leave, and axe is referring to a guitar. as a musician i know i'd never leave anywhere for good without my guitar, and bringing his favorite guitar in itself could be symbolic of leaving for good. otherwise it's a threat of violence, or a confession of previously intended violence. or lastly he's saying i'm taking my favorite axe (way of hurting you) with me when i leave, meaning he's planning on leaving in order to stop hurting her. "Don't look so frightened This is just a passing phase Just one of my bad days" that's all it is. some people's bad days are worse than others, he's saying this is normal for him. so please don't be alarmed, i won't hurt you, i just need to get this shit out of my head. "Would you like to watch T. V.? Or get between the sheets? Or contemplate the silent freeway? Would you like something to eat?" very sarcastic. these are basic things that couples do, but they're boring things. he's repeating things she's asked him, while he was in a bad mood she'd ask him to do things like these to get his mind off of what was bothering him. just normal things that people do to escape. the sarcasm voices disdain. "Would you like to learn to fly? Would you like to see me try?" pure and simple words said to hurt. 'why don't you jump off a cliff?' essentially means 'go to hell.' 'fuck off.' etc. the answer will almost always be 'no.' so he follows with 'then i will.' he's just being hurtful. "Would you like call the cops? Do you think it's time I stopped? Why are you running away?" starts off with a certain amount of sarcasm still in his voice, though it could be unintentional (many times i've spoken with an unintended tone of voice), but by the end of the three lines he's truly confused and distressed. to him these actions are normal and routine, but everybody always runs away. they take their turn and then he takes his and it seems like such an overreaction but he honestly just feels that strongly. he can't help it. turn in this song means a turn as in you go, then i go. it also means a turn in mood, like a turn for the worse. |

| Man Man – Spider Cider Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
a few corrections made: Say goodnight to those bittersweet days When you could tell someone that you loved 'em And you wouldn't lose your shame (shape?). And now you gotta bite your tongue And feel the cold blood running down your face. Spider Cider Spider Cider Spider Cider Spider Cider You drink yourself sideways to try to replay (replace). For a turn at birth you unearth The beast you'll never tame. And now you've found someone to hold until they leave you empty and alone. Spider Cider Spider Cider Spider Cider Spider Cider But you've got the fever, girl, And I've got the fever. We've got the fever, girl, Now we're cursed to the bone. Spider Cider Spider Cider Spider Cider Spider Cider You should always run With a loaded gun in your mouth (repeat) fight off evil snakes break bottles at your wake i'll tell the black widow spider on your pillow "i love her" i'll die for you. when the cops come around questioning your whereabouts well i will lie I will lie i will lie i will lie in the dust with you You should always run With a loaded gun in your mouth. Kiss on the lips. Oh, these cold, chaotic times! You can't outrun the holy war So what's the use of trying? And all the world goes to shit. You've already lived with years and years of it. Spider Cider Spider Cider Spider Cider Spider Cider You've got the fever, girl And I've got the fever. We've got the fever, girl, Now we're cursed to the bone. |

| Modest Mouse – Birds vs. Worms Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| bird is sometimes used as a word for a woman, and worm, well there's a certain similarity to men that we all realise i hope. an interesting little note i thought. the song itself is fairly self explanatory, it's saying "i'm done trying to get along with you, because we don't have to. if the birds and the worms can eternally be in conflict why shouldn't we be able to?" | |
| Pixies – Gigantic Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
@levitator or lactosefreeman the surfer rosa version has the drum stick count off at the beginning. the single version does not. the single version has a lot of reverb [grain silo] (i'm assuming that's the effect of recording it, then playing back in the bathroom and recording that to give it a "live sound") also there is no wood block or piano in either of them. what you think is wood block is hitting the edge of the snare. |
|
| Pixies – Caribou Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| this song is clearly about reincarnation. a caribou who's reincarnated as a human. | |
| Modest Mouse – Edit the Sad Parts Lyrics | 15 years ago |
| oh also. the line about the coal shoe shine i believe is a reference to poverty. he can make make-shift shoe polish out of coal, but no matter how much he shines or how nice the polish itself it, you just can't polish away a hole. you can't hide the poverty. | |
| Modest Mouse – Edit the Sad Parts Lyrics | 15 years ago |

i do agree that brock and oberst fall into different specific categories, but they both are technically emo (writing and playing music that is emotionally relevant to the writer). i would compare isaac brock and black francis though. in fact modest mouse and pixies are very very similar. i will also say that none of them qualify as best lyricist of all time. ian curtis and bob dylan both top them easily. that's not to say they're not great though. |

| Pixies – Monkey Gone to Heaven Lyrics | 15 years ago |
|
have none of you read a shred of numerology? it's been awhile for me but i know that 5 is the number of man because it's an earthy number because it's made from 2 and 3. 6 is sky if i remember correctly. and 7 is heaven. 10 is also god by the way if i remember right. but that bears no consequence in this song. he uses it because he uses religious imagery all the time. he was a born again evangelist for a period. 6 is the number of the beast. everybody knows that. 5 is man because it's one less than 6 i'm sure. and god is 7 because he's better than the devil. (on a side note: the aryan brotherhood at one point used a tripointed swastika as their symbol because it symbolised triumph over the devil. three 7s at 66.6 degrees to each other.) but i ultimately believe the story that this monkey's gone to heaven was to help him remember the tune. i do that all the time. and i'm sure it's about death of the environment. either way it's a bitchin' tormenting song. |

| Bob Dylan – Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| 12 and 35 is more than likely something he came up with off the top of his head. numbers of that sort are typically take numbers. as this is all one take (according to others on here.) they can't be take numbers. if it was one take then he picked two numbers off the top of his head to tack on as false take numbers as a joke. dylan had a tendency to record a song a very large number of times. to get it perfect. he could have been poking fun at himself. or maybe they actually are take numbers. | |
| Bob Dylan – Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
because people on drugs latch on to any possible reference to whatever drug they're on in whatever song happens to be playing. it doesn't matter how impossibly vague or how blissfully obvious (this song) it is. the reason so many 60s songs are attached to drugs is because of the myth that everybody in the 60s was completely gone all the time. which isn't true. by any means. and in fact the great majority of 60s songs are not drug inspired and there are very few which are actively about drugs. this drug myth actually existed within the 60s, only then it was that all the long haired musicians only did things that had to do with drugs. dylan knew this and used it. he very well may have been high when he came up with the idea, but the fact of the matter is: as a whole the song is not about drugs. no matter how impossibly ambiguous the refrain is. |

| Bob Dylan – Mr. Tambourine Man Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
i know the feeling described in this song. i've spent long nights and days wandering the streets of *insert nameless suburban city here* and it's just that. when you leave you're ready. you've got no place you're going. you're just going. the tambourine man isn't a drug dealer but simply a metaphor for all persons and things you may see and/or meet on your wanderings. and you follow them. you go where they take you. with no thought as to how you'll get home because you couldn't really care less about getting home. just about the fact that you're going. it's about wandering. hitchhiking. jumping trains. being on the road. on foot or otherwise. it's about the journey to wherever it is you may find yourself at the end. the first verse is just the same. the evening's gone. it's night. you're wandering nowhere and everywhere at the same time. but you're still not sleeping. your weariness may astound you. it never did the first night for me, but it did usually by the end of the night. and even though you may be tired, if you get the chance to dance you always take it. dance being a metaphor for anything and everything that takes more energy than walking. you may be tired, but you'll do anything that presents itself as an opportunity. it's about taking life as it comes. for what it's worth. and for all it offers itself for. just take what you're given and appreciate it. because anything is better than nothing. which is what you're escaping. or what i was escaping maybe i should say. |

little kid killer? he's a college student. majoring in medicine. it's not about the manson murders. they happened in august 69. before this song was recorded. it's not about the ripper either. it's just a song. about things that go wrong for no reason. according to it's author. |

| The Pillows – Little Busters Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| actually xerquina, many scenes in the show (therefore also effecting the whole premise of the series) were written around the song. you're right, the song came first. that's what you're ultimately getting at, i assume. (hope) but they play off each other. | |

severin is too the character's name. it's about masochism. there is no question. it was inspired by the book of the same name by leopold von sacher-masoc. masochism was named after him. |
|
| Nirvana – I Hate Myself and Want to Die Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| kurt's lyrics have no concrete meaning. they're just a bunch of words and/or phrases put into a melodic rhythm. and he killed himself. courtney just drove him to it. it's that simple. stop believing everything you read on conspiracy sites. | |
| Nirvana – Come As You Are Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| it wasn't murder. he most certainly shot himself. but i do believe courtney drove him to it. she pushed for him to try and get as much money as possible. to use his fame. etc. etc. but he didn't really want to. he did because he loved her, but it went against his moral standing. he was a punk. and he was forced into the spotlight of mainstream rock. and courtney was an attention whore who used that to her own advantage. i believe they loved each other at the beginning, but after a while it went away. and if you notice courtney called the police and told them kurt locked himself in a room with a gun, and when they got there he told them that he locked himself in the room to get away from courtney. what's that saying? | |
| Nirvana – Sliver Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| this always sort of reminds me of my own grandmother's. i'd often get to eat ice cream after dinner there. which i didn't get at home. and the waking up in my mother's arms line reminds me of one time when my mother went out and i had to go to my grandma's and i had an asthma attack. and i woke up in my mother's arms. basically. i usually liked it at my grandma's though. *shrug* | |
| Nirvana – Milk It Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
kurts lyrics meant nothing to him. (for the most part) everybody else just attaches their own meaning. that's why nirvana is so great. they're depersonalised. but not really. "I am my own parasite I don't need a host to live" he feeds off himself. it does sound like a self sufficiency reference, but the word parasite has a connotation that says he doesn't like it. he wants to depend on somebody but can't. either because of issues he has or because nobody he knows is dependable enough. so he depends on himself. not needing a host to live in implies that he considers dependent people parasitic. "We feed off of each other We can share our endorphins" he found another parasite. (courtney.) sharing endorphins = sharing pleasure. i.e. sex, drugs, etc. "test meat. doll steak" it sounds to me like he's saying "test me. don't stay." which is pretty self explanatory. "Look on the bright side of suicide" it's not really all that bad of an idea is it? is what he's saying. "Lost eyesight I'm on your side" like was said before. he can't really see anything. what's right or wrong, good or bad. etc. so he's just going to agree and be on your side. whoever that may be. "Angel left wing, right wing, broken wing" the left side is alive and angelic. the right side is broken, dead. the left hand path is the bad side, while the right hand path is the good side. the road to salvation. he's saying he's damned. and according to someone on here suicide was looked down upon in all his religions. and it is in most religions. so it's saying he's planning on killing himself. so is damned. but not because he really wants to. the right path is just broken. he has to take the left path. "Lack of iron and/or sleeping" exhaustion. "I own my own pet virus" this is courtney... "I get to pet and name her" ...or is it frances bean? a lot of people consider children to be a bad thing. why should kurt be any different? i don't believe that he really didn't love his daughter, but on a bad day he may consider her an ailment. and in biology viruses don't die, they are inorganic beings. not technically alive. saying even if he lost her she'd still be there. because of guilt or whatever. "Her milk is my shit My shit it is her milk" apparently he was talking about courtney with this. he's not thinking very highly of whoever he's talking about. she's living off of his shit. "Protector of the kennel Ecto-plasma, Ecto-skeletal Obituary birthday Your scent is still here in my place of recovery!" this honestly sounds like a bunch of rambling. he's probably talking to the protector of the kennel. whoever that may be. ecto plasma ecto skeletal has some sort of spiritual reference or sci fi reference. ecto plasma is the physical essence of ghosts or something. and ecto skeletal is something he made up. but the reference to ghosts has undertones of suicide if only because they came from his mouth. obituary birthday is a deathday. or died on his birthday. your scent is a reminder of someone. and the fact that it's still in his place of recovery means it's not a good person. and he's reminded of that person. so he can't really recover. it's an expression of how futile it seems to keep trying. i managed to attach a meaning to every line in the song. =D i still say it didn't really mean anything to him. most of the lines at least. |

| Marilyn Manson – Evidence Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
this song has a lot of meaning for me. and nothing like any of you have said. this song is definitely about evan by the way. "You have eyes that Lead me on" evan's eyes lie to him. he sees in them a truth that doesn't exist. the girl i know isn't that way. but she does have alluring eyes. "And a body that Shows me death" beautiful body. and one that may lead him to kill himself. because it will fuck up his life and leave him alone. he wants it. but it'll be an affair. which never end well. so he'll end up without a wife. and this young girl will inevitably move on soon after. which will leave him alone. and that leads to depression and so on. you get the picture. "Your lips look like they were made For something else but They just suck my breath" they could be made for a lot of things. obviously what else can they suck...? kissing. lots of things. but all they do is take his breath away. they're that perfect. again the same way i feel. "I want your pain" in my case i want to know the side of her that pains her. i want her pain. "To taste why you’re ashamed" she's ashamed of it. but she won't tell me what it is. and i want it. "And I know you’re not just what you say to me" i know that she isn't what she says. i know that she's hiding something. not only can i see it, but she tells me. hints at it. "And I’m not the only moment you’re made of" i know i'm not her everything. i'm just a passing interest. "You’re so sudden and sweet" sudden. unpredictable. strange. and it's sweet. a good thing. "All legs, knuckles, knees" this doesn't hold much meaning to me. sorry. "Head’s blown clean off" she's dead. she may still be walking, but she's dead. dead on the inside. or that's how it appears. probably at her worst. in my case at least. when my image of her is the worst. those times when i don't much like her. "Your mouth’s paid off" when coupled with the last line we get a sexual reference. a blowjob. again she's at her worst. he hates her right now. he figures she's never said anything worth while so her mouth is finally doing something worthwhile. but it's killing her in his mind. this doesn't hold much truth in my situation. "Fuck me till we know it’s unsafe" in manson's case he's cheating on dita. in mine this is what i want. she tells me how dangerous it is to let what i want out of the cage she's locked it in. which is where the unsafe comes in. the rest is self explanatory. "And we’ll paint Over the evidence" hide it. put it back away. in manson's case he's keeping it from dita. in mine it's my way of reassuring her. we'll paint over the evidence. we'll hide it back away. "I want you wanting me" this is what i want from any girl. and this is what haunts manson. he knows that he's really not that important to her. so he feels guilty about cheating on dita with someone who will just throw him away. so he wants her to appreciate him. to keep him. to want him. "I want what I see in your eyes" in manson's case he sees that she loves him. wants him. cares for him. but he knows it's a lie. but he wants it to be true. in mine i want what i see. i know she's hiding things. i can see that. i can see the dark in her eyes. and i want that dark. "So give me something to be scared of Don’t give me something to satisfy" i want to be scared more than anything else usually. so don't give me something that will comfort me. give me the truth. give me something truly frightening. in his case he's expressing his masochistic tendencies. he wants her to tell him the truth and frighten him. essentially give him a reason to leave. to cut off the affair. as opposed to her telling him what he wants to hear. this song is very obviously about his affair with evan. like almost all of this album. the whole album is drenched with gothic vampiric tendencies. self mutilation. car crashes. his real life relationships. and lewis carroll references. he's getting into character with his movie explains the latter. he's always had such references but they're much more profound and plentiful in this one. for obvious reasons. |
|
| Nirvana – You Know You're Right Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
it's about a bad relationship with courtney. we all know that. but the lyrics here are wrong. "I will never bother you I will never promise to I will never follow you I will never bother you" i'm going to stop. give up. go away. is what he's saying. i'm done trying. "Never speak a word again I will crawl away for good" again, saying i'm just going to leave. "I will move away from here You wouldn't be afraid of fear No thought was put in to this I always knew it would come to this" i'm leaving. we're done. you don't have to be afraid of nothing anymore. the marriage wasn't thought out. he just did it. and always knew that it would end badly. "Things have never been so swell I have never felt this well" sarcasm. and the front he feels he may be putting on for the public. he wasn't a very good actor. "Pain" x3 duh. "You know you're right" x3 talking to both himself and courtney. trying to convince himself that he's justified in his choice. and telling her that he's giving up. again. the "you're right. you're right. i'm wrong. let's just stop arguing" statement. he's also talking about her. how she thinks she does know she's right. he doesn't believe it. so it's more sarcasm. "I'm so warm and calm inside I no longer have to hide Let’s talk about someone else OR there's talk about someone else sterling silver begins to melt" the calm before the storm. he's at the end of his rope. he's doing to die. he knows it. the third line is questionable. either fits. in the first case he's just trying to get everybody to leave him alone. in the second there's somebody else in the equation. a third wheel. as toomanyhumans said: "courtney's having an affair". the sterling silver is their wedding rings. "Nothing really bothers her She just wants to love herself" courtney's selfish. and basically a sociopath. his depression doesn't bother her, she's too focused on herself. "I will move away from here You wouldn't be afraid of fear No thought was put into this I always knew to come like this" same as before. "Things have never been so swell I have never felt this well" same as before. Pain x5 You know you're right x17 Pain yeah,. that's my interpretation. i think it makes the most sense too. especially the sterling silver. why on earth would soup melt in the first place. and how would it say anything about an affair? i love this song. and i can use it in my current situation. not the same interpretation. but it fits my life. |

| Marilyn Manson – Heart-Shaped Glasses (When the Heart Guides the Hand) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| the line "kiss me it'll heal but it won't forget" along with the "when i was cut and she was dressed in white" sounds like he cut himself and she helped him. dressed in white. and "she'll never cover up what we did with her dress." stopping the blood flow. there's still the hint of what else they did with it. i know that's not what it's really about, but it fits. | |
