| After Forever – Sins of Idealism Lyrics | 16 years ago |
The song also questions whether it is right to condemn the father and the mother for their ways, if you've never been in their situation. "Can you be the one to judge it all?" Sinner or righteous, the line is so thin... |
| Stream of Passion – Out In the Real World Lyrics | 16 years ago |
For me this song is about a person who is gay, has strong feelings for someone and cannot find the strength to come out and be with them. I probably see it this way because I am, but it does make quite a lot of sense if you read through the lyrics carefully, especially the three verses, e.g. "I've hidden wishes for so long, buried deep inside, keeping them secret from a world That'll never realize The way I dream." |
| Epica – Resign to Surrender (A New Age Dawns, Part IV) Lyrics | 16 years ago |
'The current system leads to profit-seeking deeds..." The song is saying that we're selfish, and panic when wealth is 'out of sight'. Instead we should be generous and 'distribute our wealth', which kinda rings bells of pro-communism although maybe that's not quite what the song is getting at. The song hopes for a selfless human race, because in our own selfishness we're hurting our own, and the earth we live on. 'When we think the end is here... there is hope along the way, and there a new age dawns.' |

| Spiral Architect – Spinning Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I too think it's about routine and living your life for the sake of it, and not giving it any meaning. Great song. Can't say I can sit through any other Spiral Architect tune yet though. Mind-boggling is definitely a good way to describe it... |
| After Forever – Beneath Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| SalmonGod, that's a pretty damn good interpretation for me as well, nice one. | |
| After Forever – The Evil That Men Do Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Quickstep, you should have told Dullahan to go fuck himself. Even if he's right, he's still a dickhead that thinks he's the shit because he knows the meaning behind some song. Anyway, yeah I like this song, thanks for the meaning Dullahan but get off your high horse. If I met you in person you wouldn't say boo to a goose. |
| Liquid Tension Experiment – Kindred Spirits Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think the idea of this song is that the guitar and keyboard speak to each other and dance like kindred spirits. They each have a solo of their own to express affection, and then towards the end they join in harmony. It's a love song told using the two different instruments. | |
| Epica – The Obsessive Devotion Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Thanks for the translation Niels, really appreciated! In fact, your translations made me consider the fact that this song might also be about someone with a faith in God that they want to abandon but can't, since they've believed for so long. It's about this but it's in the guise of a song about a relationship, similar to Never Enough. What do you all think? |
| Epica – Living a Lie (The Embrace That Smothers Part VIII) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think its about Jehovah's Witnesses and how they disallow blood transfusions etc. within their religion. "Human sources will not save The power of faith heals us all." That's what I think anyway. |
| Epica – Quietus Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| @GotSpoo: Actually I'm not religious. This is just the way I interpret it, and I think it makes sense. And for the record you also don't have to be religious to regret having an abortion, or to be opposed to it. | |
| After Forever – Intrinsic Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| That was a pretty kickass interpretation. I think you're spot on. | |
| Epica – Never Enough Lyrics | 17 years ago |
The lines "Thinking you are in need" are not talking to God, they're talking to themselves. They're saying, "I'm hearing what my ears can't hear Feeling what my arms can't touch I think I'm in need, thinking I'm incomplete" But in reality, according to the song, you need to stop thinking you need God to be happy. |
| After Forever – Ex Cathedra Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I'd guess what the song is about if I had any notion what the fuck they're saying | |
| Nightwish – Cadence of Her Last Breath Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| Very interesting interpretations, although I'd still like to try and figure out what the line "Sometimes a dream turns into a dream" means. It's the most cryptic lyric of the album, in my opinion. It sounds great but I'm still trying to figure it out. | |
| Epica – The Obsessive Devotion Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's about letting go of someone that you love. Even though this person is abusive and unfaithful, you love them anyway obsessively. Towards the end, that line is "I effaced myself for you." And at the end, he lets go and says 'this is the end, I've had enough'. I'd like to know what the Latin parts mean again. |
| Epica – Safeguard to Paradise Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I can't figure out what the hell this song is about. Persuading with force, virgins... maybe it's about rape, but then there's the search for higher truth, and I'm totally confused. Someone help... any ideas? | |
| Michael Jackson – Superfly Sister Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Yeah, Vesper Teen, I think you hit the nail on the head. | |
| Within Temptation – Enter Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Reminds me of the fairytale of Rapunzel. In my opinion, the male voice is describing his journey in coming to save the princess. There's a bit of sexual innuendo there too, I think. | |
| Epica – Quietus Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This song is about a woman who gets pregnant due to neglegence, aborts the child and ends up regretting it all her life. | |
| Epica – Never Enough Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This is about a person trying to believe in God. They are reaching out but are receiving nothing back. They see God as having 'everlasting greed'. If you read the lyrics throughout this song it makes a lot of sense. | |
| Nightwish – The Poet And The Pendulum Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Okay... I'm going to do my best with this one. This song is about Tuomas's pain in letting Tarja go from the band. The pendulum represents the day he fired her.... it was always coming, closer and closer, and he knew the ultimate pain would happen eventually. "For years, I have been strapped unto this altar." The widowed writer line refers to a writer that has lost something, e.g. a wife or a muse, i.e. Tarja. "Oh Christ, how I hate what I have become Take me home." He wants to forget all about these troubles and just fade away back into his childhood (the 'dreamer's hideaway'). I think The Pacific represents the doubt - the blind eye he turned to the friction with Tarja all thoe years. Everything is perfect, the turquoise waterfalls. He wants to be tucked in beneath blue, the pain and the rain (all representingso he won't have to see it and he can pretend it's not there. The 'blue' doesn't have a capital B like in Dark Chest of Wonders, where it's referred to as a good thing. In this song there is no capital B, and so it refers to sadness, for example, "I'm feeling blue." His lullaby is the swaying blade. The problem is always lingering above him, even though he is tucked beneath it. Late at night he knows it draws near. "On the shore we sat and hoped." This is possibly a direct reference to Tarja. He invited her into his world and - his oceans - and hoped with her that the pale moon - his music - would keep them together just as it keeps the fans together "Whose guiding light chose you, chose you all." Then the music changes and the fear kicks in once again. "2nd robber to the right of Christ." In the bible, two robbers were crucified next to Jesus Christ. The first one mocked and condemned him. The second robber defended Christ, proclaiming him to be innocent and indeed the son of God. Jesus then allows this second robber to be the first soul to join him in Heaven. Tuomas refers to himself as this second robber, perhaps because he believed until the end that Nightwish could live on with Tarja. But it was not to be. He is torn in half and so comes the death of his inner infant, his beliefs and his innocence. The crows represent everyone in the world who think they have a right to judge him. They take advantage of his suffering. He views himelf as having a "heart of stone". He feels that he should go to Hell for doing what he did, and that everyone would be glad for it. "Slain by the bell tolling for his farewell." This line refers to the pendulum, which he always knew would ultimately bring about his farewell. "The Year of Our Lord" is the year that Jesus was born. Perhaps 2005 was a kind of anniversary... I'm not quite sure. This possibly hints that even though Tuomas has died, there is a coming rebirth as he is "called from the cares of the world". He lies with a "smile on his face" (more positivity). However, the "1000 pages of erased text" represents everything he has ever written and worked for in his life. As Tarja leaves it is all gone, and all his pages of hopeful poetry are rendered meaningless. "Save me!" In the end, Tuomas's soul is revived thanks to the love and support from his parents. They see that he has become cold, and warn him that "the blade will keep on descending". There will always be problems in life. They warm his heart and bring him back to life by reassuring him that he will alway have their love. And so... The beginning... |

| Janet Jackson – Moist Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Warmth and this song go together. Yep, first a blowjob then a lickout. Nice. | |
| Janet Jackson – Warmth Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| LOL couldn't have said it better myself! | |
| Kamelot – Karma Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I think it's about King Lear. | |
| Evanescence – Whisper Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think this 'her' and 'she' in Evanescence songs is a reference to the devil. The ultimate evil seems to be viewed as female, also in the song Missing where you can hear the whispers, "Can you stand to fight her? You won't say the words" I agree that the song is about fighting evil and sin, perhaps trying to overcome your dark side. |
| Evanescence – Tourniquet Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The song is about someone committing suicide but still wanting to get into Heaven. All they wanted to do is get rid of their pain... but now they pray that what they've done won't bring so much more. | |
| Evanescence – Missing Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Yeah, the whispers are also interesting, "You won't stand to fight her, you won't say the words..." I think this 'her' and 'she' in Evanescence songs is a reference to the devil. The ultimate evil seems to be viewed as female, also in the song Whisper, "She beckons me, shall I give in?" |

| Michael Jackson – Speechless Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Michael has said that he wrote this about his children. One day he said he was climbing trees with them and he was so insired by them that this song came into his head. | |
| Michael Jackson – Invincible Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This is about a woman who is very materialistic and doesn't appreciate how much her man loves her. Nothing he does is ever good enough - all she cares about is diamonds and trips around the world. | |
| Nightwish – Live to Tell the Tale Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Where did you get those last two verses from? | |
| Nightwish – Live to Tell the Tale Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"An errant soul Hopeless and foul All gone but the will to live to tell the tale" Never give up however hopeless things may seem... "A single grain can tip the scale..." ...Because anyone can make a difference. |
| Nightwish – Dead Gardens Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song is basically Tuomas expressing a lack of inspiration - writer's block, like some of you said. "The story behind the painting I drew is already told." He feels he can't come up with anything original. "No more tearstains on the pages of my diary." There has been no sadness or drama in his life to fuel his emotions and make him want to create music. "Tired but unable to give up since I'm responsible for the lives I saved." He feels a responsibility to his band and to his fans to at least try and create a new song. I think the song's music fits perfectly with its lyrics. One of my favourites from Once! \m/ |
| Nightwish – Dark Chest Of Wonders Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| What is this problem with Peter Pan that some people seem to have? Tuomas has written songs based on other Disney classics before, e.g. Beauty and the Beast, FantasMic etc. so why not Peter Pan? My god some people are so hypocritical. I'm not even saying the song is indeed about Peter Pan, I just wanted to point out how people sometimes shoot themselves in the foot while attempting to be cool. | |
| Michael Jackson – Xscape Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song is so cool. It's about his conflict with the media and the way the public judges him. Fuckin great song, rock on MJ. I've always wondered why the ad-libs in this song are always included in its lyrics. There's really no need for them - it takes the spontaneity out of the song. |
| Dream Theater – Honor Thy Father Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Yeah it's about a neglecting parent. I love the heavy part after the line 'Don't cross the crooked step'. really gets me pumped! |
| Within Temptation – Say My Name Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think this song is about a person who's loved one has Alzheimers disease and is dying. "Please say my name..." They are asking their loved one to remember their name and to remember who they are, but of course the person has Alzheimers and cannot remember. This really hurts the person, who says "It hurts to much.. I pray now that soon you're released to where you belong." I.e. "I love you and you deserve this peace". I can really relate to this song because my grandad had Alzheimers. It always brings a tear to my eye. |
| Nightwish – Wish I Had an Angel Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think this song is about a man who goes out at night with his friends, but ends up coming home alone and wishing he had a woman to spend the night with. "Drunken disguise changes all the rules... I took a step outside an innocent heart" Usually he would consider sex as a sacred thing, but tonight he is drunk and all he cares about now is getting laid. All his rules have changed because he isn't thinking straight. "Greatest thrill, not to kill, but to have the prize of the night" The prize of the night, as a man at least, is finding a girl to take home with you. |
| Nightwish – Ever Dream Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| AquilaCat, those words appear in the booklet after Ever Dream but never in the actual song. | |
| After Forever – Attendance Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Well, I suppose 'splendid sights' would make more sense, but this is how the lyrics appear in the booklet. I think this song is about school. Mainly because of the title and how it relates to the content in the lyrics. The verses speak about the violence and fear in school, possibly from bullies or even teachers, "Speak out loud, die!" The chorus describes daydreaming during classes, "Here is our dreamworld.. You can always tell we never learned." |
| Nightwish – Astral Romance Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I don't necessarily agree that the lyrics never meant anything to Tarja, and I definitely don't agree that they'd sound better all sung by Tuomas! Thanks for your interpretation, Aerith, it's a pretty awesome one and I'd say you're dead right. |
| Nightwish – Amaranth Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Amaranth is the name of a flower, it's name derived from a Greek word meaning 'the one that does not wither'. It's known as the never-fading flower. That clearly relates to the chorus. I'm not quite sure if 'never-fading' and 'rain' are meant as two separate terms or one singular phrase. I'd say that the amaranth is symbolic of something, but again I'm not sure what. Perhaps an eternal struggle for happiness, "Reaching, searching for something untouched". |
| Dream Theater – As I Am Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"Lost in a sea of mediocrity" That is definitely a stab at the terrible state of today's mainstream music. |
| Evanescence – Eternal Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I really like Pookie's interpretation of the song | |
| Evanescence – Missing Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think it's sung from the point of view of Jesus Christ, to someone who has lost faith in him. "I won't be home again Maybe someday you'll look up, And barely conscious, you'll say to no one Isn't something missing?" Jesus is saying "I will leave you as you wish, but see how far you get without my guidance". "You forgot me long ago. Am I that unimportant? Am I so insignificant?" More emphasis on how much this person has lost faith in him. "Even though I'm the sacrifice You won't cry for me, not now Though I'd die to know you love me I'm all alone." Even though he's given his life, the greatest sacrifice ever, for this person, he's still not receiving any love from them. "And if I bleed, I'll bleed Knowing you don't care." That's what I'm pretty sure this song is about. |
| After Forever – Discord Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This is about two people in an abusive relationship. Sander is the abused, and Floor is the abuser. She says "a lonely heart won't forsake me" i.e. "you cant leave me because you know that no one else will take you" Sander says "you take the life out of me" i.e. "I know you're bad for me, I have to leave you" But floor tries to persuade, "won't you embrace it? the power we feel can be for real" The word 'discord' means 'disagreement'. These two people clash and aren't meant for each other. |
| Slipknot – Vermilion Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The song is about a fantasy woman that he made up and fell in love with. The verses are a description of what they do to each other in his fantasies, but ultimately he knows that she's not real and never will be. | |
| Slipknot – Vermilion Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The song is about a fantasy woman that he made up and fell in love with. The verses are a description of what they do to each other in his fantasies, but ultimately he knows that she's not real and never will be. | |
| Within Temptation – What Have You Done Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's about two people in a relationship that know they don't love each other anymore. They both know that it's going nowhere. It's possibly due to both of them cheating on each other, hence "What have you done?" "I know I should stop believing/I know that there's no retrieving/It's over now" This song is like a sequel to See Who I Am, where the two people in the relationship try to overcome their differences and make things work despite what people say. |
| Metallica – Battery Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| The positive and negative side thing is interesting. I was trying to figure out how the word 'battery' related properly to the song until I figured out that it's 'battery' as in 'to batter someone's head in'. | |
| Nightwish – Eva Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| Tuomas has said that it's about a little girl being mocked at school | |
