I did not take the time to read through all the comments so forgive me if I repeat someone previously in the thread... This album is a concept, like most of the Opeth albums. They may not all be a clear cut link. But most have a common theme. And many of the members, and in most cases Mike, make it known that they are "just stories". I'm pretty sure this has something to do with a man killing his mother, or doing wrong onto her when she needed him most. And instead of being there/or doing right. He becomes selfish and doesn't do what he knows is right. So this is his guilt overcoming him and making him paranoid. He uses the metaphor of hounds I'm pretty sure to explain the European myth of the Dartmoor. Which were "hell hounds" sent after a man that sold his soul to the devil but didn't pay up and fled instead. The part about the trees thieving from him, Is like his will just pouring out and becoming helpless. Like a tree. They can only stand and bare the storm. They cannot fight back or move. He knows he's screwed so he just waits to be taken. But he still tries to evade the antagonist in a pitiful way. The ending I personally think is a way of explaining the man saying "fuck it" and just throws caution to the wind. Burns the trees (his paranoia) and shows himself for what he really is. |
