its a straightforward, brilliantly written, (anti) love song !!! ie, just change the negatives to positive "it aint" to "it's" and "go away" to "come over"...."I AM the one..." "I won't let ..." etc etc ....now the spirit of the song is the polar opposite to the one we all know so well |

Nick Cave does a great version of this in the movie "the assassination of jesse james by that coward robert ford" The pogues did a version too. Bruce tinkered with the lyrics a little. Great old fashioned ballad !! |

Its a (relatively simple) song that can be interpreted two ways, which is the clever part !
I could be a man preparing for a night of romance with his lover (with a nice bottle of wine) or it could be a parent singing a lullaby for their baby . Beautiful song . |

Great song, especially the version by The Band ! Thing is, I think its a result of Dylans tours of Europe, visiting all the "tourist" sites, Art Galleries etc. & deciding that although he loves the art etc. he'd prefer to be back in the U.S. where he intends creating his own masterpiece. Is this too simplistic ?? |
