I think the war thing is the most accurate. I think it's kind of like because he was fighting in a war he felt dirty and contaminated from killing people and the sights he saw. "Mother what the war did to my legs and to my tongue" I think the legs thing is a physical wound whereas the tongue thing is just how it make him think differently and be more sharp-tongued towards people almost to the point of being nasty. "You should've raised a baby girl, I could have been a better son" This sounds a lot like WWII, and I don't think women were really on the fighting lines during that time. The better son thing sounds more like his whole life, that he's always been messed up and that maybe he thinks girls are less corruptible. After the second chorus I think it's like he's accepted his fate, he knows he's going to hell and that he's a fuck-up and he's kind of falling into the role, like with the Liza Minnelli part his response is sincere in a really biting way, like he wants to protect her [his mother] because he knows he'll mess her up. "Through fortune and fame we fall" might be a reference to soldiers in general, like when they die they're glorified and their families get money [I think] and stuff but they're still dead, which is like the last stanza. |

it does seem like it's about Gerard Way if you look at the complete lyrics, especially the second verse. I just thought it was a little sad that [if it is about Gerard] they turned something like that into a song and mentioned it in public. It just seems a little juvenile, but it makes for a fucking amazing song. |

It's because generally [and I'm generalizing here, hence the word choice] they haven't had as much experience of an artist who has been around for 4+ years. A lot of times when the younger fans find out about the artists it's on a TV show [this may not apply to you, but like I said, I'm stereotyping] like MTV or something and then that leads to 'LAWLZ he's so hawt, i should check out his band' so they like the look before they like the band, which leads to the 'teenie' thing. but like you said, everyone's different. yeah, it is pleading. If you look at their most recent interview with MTV news [I hate referencing them, but they're usually accurate instead of some teenie site] they mention that Gerard broke up with his girlfriend of 6 years. It's probably about that, because during that 6 year time he'd been addicted to cocaine -- "another dollar's just another blow". I think it's from the girl's point of view, talking about him leaving to tour all the time -- "don't ever think I'll make you try to stay". "When they knock you down and out" might be some reference to critics or haters or something. |

A bender is a drinking binge but I don't think it's really a happy one, it's more like being out of your mind wasted for a few days straight. I think this is pretty much interpreted the same both for the Patient and for Gerard. It's really about his addiction to drugs and alcohol and living the party-rock-star life with Bert McCracken -- "the sharpest lives are the deadliest to lead" -- which wasn't exactly a safe thing to do. I think it's about the Patient's substance abuse and his lover kind of being mad at him for it -- "you can leave like the sane abandoned me". I think he maybe cheated or something because of "a kiss before she goes" so it's like he's having some kind of affair with someone else so his girlfriend/wife is leaving him. The second verse might be about going to a party where there's a lot of drugs, alcohol, and sex going on, "Juliet loves the beat (music) and the lust it commands". "There's a place in the dark where the animals go" -- the users are the animals. |

The great thing about TBP is that you can take it either as the Patient's story or as a metaphor for just regular life, so there really could be two interpretations for each song. I think as far as the Patient's story goes, it's like he's dead and has come back as a ghost to walk the Earth and just kind of see everything. The first verse is kind of like how he's done really bad things in his life and although people might miss him they really don't know what a bad person he is/sees himself as. The chorus is kind of self-explainatory. I think the second verse is him seeing his old girlfriend, who maybe is bisexual because of the "boys and girls inside your bed" line, and kind of making a sarcastic comment on if she would go to heaven because she's not really a 'good girl'. The b-section is kind of him saying that he's not there to mess things up anymore so she can live her life how she wants to [I think maybe that's a reference to her cheating on him when he was alive]. Then it's saying that now he's dead she can let him go and then his 'real' self, the one with the personal demons, will come out. I think if you translate the song without the reference to the story of TBP it might very well be about Bert, though I don't think it's about an intimate relationship with him. The Sharpest Lives is kind of about Bert too, so maybe this one is. |

I think a lot of it is about how he realized that they all got together for funerals and that's how they [he and his old friends] would see each other. So then he and his friends kept killing each other off to see each other [which I think explains the 8 years changing to 9 years changing to 10 years because someone dies every year or something]. I think the "walking away and I will drown in the fear" has to do with his friends leaving yet again and the knowledge that another person has to die before they get to see each other. "We are all a bunch of liars" - they know that they're killing each other but they just go about it like it's normal and don't really discuss it. I think the b-section is about how they won't kill him to add to their funeral list, he'll never be taken alive. "Scrape and sink so low, I'm shocked at what you're capable of" - he's wondering how they all sink so low as to kill people to see each other. I might just be taking it too deeply, indigo_blu's explaination is viable, too. |

i think the 'vanity i'm breaking let's me live my life like this' has to do with the breakfast on a mirror thing because a vanity usually has a mirror on it so if you break it you get pieces of it and if you do coke off of a mirror then it's like the pieces from the vanity help you do lines. does anyone know what frank is screaming at the end in the background? |
