Good song, not exactly amazing like some other Death Cab songs, but I can dig it. I think this song has a fairly on-the-surface meaning of a guy pursuing a girl who isn't very interested, or is indeed, repulsed. |

I don't know anything about what the song means but I read in an interview with Devon or Toby, that "After the Devil Beats His Wife", is what they call it when it's sunny and raining in the south.

1. I think what he's saying "to be my ____" is bait. I know it sounds like it could be a bunch of different words, but I am pretty sure bait is it.
2. "you are not the sun" I agree with some of these posts in that I think that part refers to how all the planets revolve around the sun, it is the sole focus. So the person he is singing to is selfish and thinks everything should revolve around him or her. |

i don't know eactly what this song means, as does no one but the writer himself and whomever he may tell, but, i just want to make the obvious observation that this entire record has the theme of violence, kinda... and i think that this song is, on the surface, about two people who shouldn't be doing something but are doing it anyway and get caught. most songs have a deeper, more visceral meaning and i honestly don't know what this one is.

I think the meaning is quite evident if you pay attention to the words, and I agree with a lot of these posts, the lyrics are subtle, intensified by David's somewhat soft voice.
I really like the breakdown in this song, I think it adds more emotion than just sadness to the entire song.

It's about the epidemic of being as Rob Bell calls, "animals" and, I think, ignoring spiritual needs that can and must only be fulfilled by God. |
