Mia doesn't sing on this song. It's all Toby. If you want to hear Mia singing, listen to "Don't Touch Dead Animals (Part 2)"

maudlin of the Well – Heaven and Weak Lyrics 14 years ago
My favorite maudlin of the Well song ever. Beautiful from beginning to end, from the soft melodic parts to the aggression, both the music and the lyrics. The emotion and brutality of this song rivals any given metal band.

I think the lyrics have to do with being hurt by somebody you loved, and the regret that the other person will feel forever for doing that. The sadness is reflected in the first half of the song, and the bitterness in the second.

In the third stanza, the narrator dwells on feelings of shame, turning his own shame at being hurt into strength ("When I was left in shame, I gained even more!"), and implying that the person who made the real mistake was the one he loved, and who broke his heart, because now she has abandoned the best thing that ever happened to her, and will forever "welter on her hurried path" of life. Whereas, for the narrator, this experience and the hurt he has felt has only made him stronger and able to endure the hardships of life ("As a prince to the world", meaning he is now in control of his life).

I especially like the line "Every time you dream in color, I'll be holding your head under." To me, that seems to imply that from now on, all of the other person's thoughts and dreams will be about this person and the regret she feels at hurting him. As in, every time she dreams, he'll be the only thing occupying her memory (holding her head under).

Also, these lyrics are missing one line. The very last line, after "but I know you can't understand", is: "Why I threw myself from the glass again."

Ayumi Hamasaki – Mirrorcle World Lyrics 15 years ago
Wow, this song is intense! It switches between orchestral, pop, and industrial so many times; I've never heard anything like it. There's even a guitar solo in there.

Kayo Dot – The Manifold Curiosity Lyrics 15 years ago
The two spoken word sections layered on top of one another sound eerie, even more so with the two speakers' voices overlapping every once in a while on some word. It's as though two people in two different places telling two different stories are somehow parallel; freaky-ass shit, I love Kayo Dot.

Kayo Dot – Wayfarer Lyrics 15 years ago
The imagery in this song is splendid; it's indescribable, but the mood of the song is definitely of the night and of sightseeing. Toby is a wonderful poet and composer.

The Sword – Fire Lances Of The Ancient Hyperzephyrians Lyrics 15 years ago
I agree with your theory on the Hyperzephyrians being Americans. I would like to add that the "fire lances" here are pretty obviously missiles, probably nuclear. To an ancient with no idea about modern warfare, a missile in the air might seem to him like a spear of fire. Besides, there's an ancient Chinese weapon known as the "fire lance" that was basically a gunpowder-propelled spear.

The Sword is so bad-ass.

Protest the Hero – Bloodmeat Lyrics 15 years ago
Lol, that probably wasn't intentional; guys just have a subconscious association of weapons with phallic symbols.

But if it was intentional, then Arif is just that much more of a genius. :P

Behemoth – Conquer All Lyrics 15 years ago
ididmytime: The Bible doesn't say we've only been around for 2000 years. Dumbass. That's why there's an Old Testament.

This song is amazing. By the way, anyone know why Nerdal writes the word "of" as "ov"?

Between the Buried and Me – Ad a Dglgmut Lyrics 15 years ago
BTBAM's lyrics are not particularly great, but I can always appreciate the message of their songs. This is exactly what I want my friends to understand about metal and so-called "noise", that it's not just random nonsense, it's got direction and it can be beautiful. The instrumental break in the middle of this song gave me goosebumps first time I heard it.

Protest the Hero – Goddess Gagged Lyrics 16 years ago
It's about music. The music of nature, the music of man. It's basically saying, words will ultimately fail to convey emotion perfectly, but music IS emotion.

"The words that confine the ideas traversed the ear to hear the song without verse." 'Verse' in this case means 'words, lyrics', not the part of the song between the chorus. Beyond the jumble of words that make up lyrics, all you hear is the sound of pure music and human voice.

Protest the Hero – Sequoia Throne Lyrics 16 years ago
"Did you come here to kill or did you come here to die?" I still don't understand what that means. My best guess is it's asking why we're all here in the first place. Fits with the theme of "Palms Read." Maybe, maybe not.

The Mars Volta – Cassandra Gemini Lyrics 16 years ago
I think the true genius of Cedric's lyrics isn't his actually telling a story (well, maybe he is), but his ability to leave things ambiguous yet have just the right amount of interconnectedness and purpose to make the listener think and create their own explanations and stories with surprising cohesiveness and evidence. Something as epic as these lyrics could only have such an epic concept behind them as that.

Protest the Hero – Turn Soonest to the Sea Lyrics 16 years ago
That thing mishmeister said about "order, chaos, new order" sounds very Nietzsche. Considering how anti-religion these guys seem to be, I wouldn't put it past them. "No Stars Over Bethlehem" is all about the idea that 'God is dead', after all. Plus, your idea of "the reincarnation of god" could very well be tied to Fortress and the reincarnation of goddess worship, though that's probably stretching it a bit. :)

Protest the Hero – Bloodmeat Lyrics 16 years ago
Ochre is a color, like yellow-brown. It pretty much describes the general color of a steppe, which is like a semi-arid plain with few trees, such as the ones in central Asia and eastern Europe. It would be the kind of place the Mongols (including Genghis Khan) came from and fought on. I don't know if the river red refers to a particular river, or if it's simply "red" because of the blood that "flows like springs of water." Hope I answered your first question at least.

Brand New – Jesus Christ Lyrics 16 years ago
I hate to think of this song as religious, because it belittles the meaning of it so much. Religion in general degrades the human experience and turns a beautiful expression like this into something about God rather than people. I think the song is simply about being alone, and even worse, feeling like you're going to be alone for the rest of your life. But the song itself is incredibly beautiful.

Aesop Rock – None Shall Pass Lyrics 16 years ago
Holy hell, I just "discovered" Aesop Rock and I've been reading his lyrics. Amazing. The way he raps is awesome, too. He might be the only rap artist that I actually like. Certain phrases in this song just blow me away, like "not enough young in his lung for the waterwings", and the entire chorus. I know what maffy means by "sequence of sceneries"...

As for the meaning, I think googlieeyes has it down. I love cryptic lyrics like this that manage to still retain meaning.

Deftones – Knife Party Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't doubt the tour bus origin of the meaning. But the awesome thing about Chino's lyrics is, they don't have to mean anything. The mere feeling he can evoke just with words and phrases is enough. Furthermore, I guess you can draw all kinds of conclusions.

Protest the Hero – Heretics & Killers Lyrics 16 years ago
Lyrically, their best song. Arif is a fucking poet. I have analyzed every word of his lyrics, and they still amaze me from time to time. But basically, everyone has said what this song is about. Sucks that the last line ("a time so full of life that I was anything but me") never made it to the actual song, because it's gorgeous.

Protest the Hero – Wretch Lyrics 16 years ago
There's probably a lot more to this song, but the last line basically sums up the point. But yeah, this song kicks ass. The gay little high-pitched singing at "when lights are dim" is awesome. Best part of the song.

Protest the Hero – The Dissentience Lyrics 16 years ago
Actually, The Spoon is right, the link is: http://headbangersblog.mtv.com/2008/01/28/protest-the-hero-kill-boredom-brain-cells-with-prog-noise/

"Brought together to burn the thing that brings them together." It's pretty clear they're talking about weed. :) The rest of the song seems to be about friends recalling experiences when they were stoned, and that sort of thing. The last line with the "girl" and "blood-meat" is probably in reference to the "bitches" they fuck, but maybe not. :D

In any case, I like to think there's little gems of hidden alternate meanings, like what mouse380 said, which I also thought was the theme of the song at first. Sometimes little things like that slip in subconciously when you write poetry.

Protest the Hero – Sequoia Throne Lyrics 16 years ago
Where do I start...Reading the lyrics again--as they were intended--it definitely has to do with space and aliens, I think. This song makes a lot of references to alien stereotypes: "Oil black eyes" describes the huge, black eyes aliens are given in movies, "stalk us as a predator" is clearly a reference to "Predator" and other movies with hostile extraterrestrials; the part about mutilation refers to the urban myth about aliens landing and mutilating cattle in fields at night (google it if you don't already know).

But more importantly, it's what Shadoruner said. We have nothing to fear from the stars, only ourselves. And while people are worrying about the supernatural and looking forward to a nonexistent afterlife ("hell-bent on heaven"), they should be focusing on the world they live in now.

So, in light of new evidence, I revise my previous "space cult" hypothesis.

The Dillinger Escape Plan – Milk Lizard Lyrics 16 years ago
I thought it was "These fields are never-ending." Makes more grammatical sense. Anyways, this song is awesome, catchy as fuck too. I don't know what it means, seems to be about a relationship at least, but it does have some nice poetic phrasing.

And WtF is a milk lizard?? I see a few references to lizardry in the lyrics, but it's still pretty cryptic.

Byzantine – Nadir Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about losing faith in the goodness of people, and reaching the lowest point of hopelessness ("nadir").

These lyrics blew me away, actually. "As I bore for the depths of depravity, a bottomless pit I have found." I love that.

Protest the Hero – Sequoia Throne Lyrics 16 years ago
This song seems considerably more difficult to decipher than "Bloodmeat". Maybe you should have waited until the album came out. Some of the lyrics here don't even make sense; that doesn't sound like Arif's style. But from what I can make out, it does seem to be about the Heaven's Gate cult.

Byzantine – Hatfield Lyrics 16 years ago
The first part seems to be about breaking away from your family's past, especially if you've got some baggage. The rest seems to be about people who use that kind of excuse to not to anything with their lives. I'm guessing the lead singer or someone in the band is from a town called Hatfield in Virginia. I don't know what the 1882 reference is about, though. Anyways, this song kicks ass. On a side-note, I went to West Virginia once. It was quite lovely.

It's about the conquest of Genghis Khan across Eurasia. It seems to switch between the perspectives of the invaders and the refugees. Btw, Rody pronounces Khanate as "kah-nah-teh", but it's actually "kah-nayt".

But damn, this shit sounds amazing, along with "Sequoia Throne". Can't wait for the album to be released. :D

Scar Symmetry – Mind Machine Lyrics 16 years ago
I don't think it's about cyborgs and literal bio-machinery. It's about the massive amount of media saturation present today, how television, biased news, the internet, even music affects every person, injecting a new philosophy or false reality into them every time they turn on the tv or click a mouse. A sort of mass hypnosis that we can see happening today. We (a lot of us) don't form our own ideas anymore; just get all our thoughts from technological broadcasting...Mind and machinery...

Those are just my thoughts. It's a good message, really. And the song is great. Not your typical death metal song nowadays...

Protest the Hero – Turn Soonest to the Sea Lyrics 16 years ago
That's the best explanation for the title I've heard so far, thanks for sharing it. I haven't been able to get it myself. But I don't think this song is from the perspective of Kezia. I think the entire song is actually that 'letter' mentioned in "She Who Mars the Skin of Gods", and it seems like maybe it's from Kezia's father, or the priest. Anyone except her mother, of course.

Every Time I Die – Guitarred and Feathered Lyrics 16 years ago
Yeah, the "whoa oh" parts are mocking, and the rest of the song is sarcastic as well... "You're goddamn right I'm a blessed lamb"....."we're gonna party tonight"... I like this song quite a bit, and the title is clever (although I hate puns).

Protest the Hero – Divinity Within Lyrics 16 years ago
Found out something else; awesome allusion in this song - Psalms 23: "Yea, though I walk through the Valley of the shadow of Death, I shall fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me."

Kezia basically has no one to comfort or save her, and she is having to face her death alone. I love how the last song in every 'act' always leaves off at the very end before she gets executed. And then "A Plateful of Our Dead" comes in AFTER her death. So you never actually experience the exact moment of her execution, but you know it happened....

Dream Theater – In the Presence of Enemies Pt.2 Lyrics 16 years ago
I think it leads up to the climax of the song quite well with the quiet, eerie opening. Great song, but it always seems like Dream Theater's songs drag on a bit long, especially some of the instrumental sections. But like I said, it's a great song nonetheless, especially "Slaughter of the Damned". And really potent lyrics; some of them are taken from Psalms 23, btw.
