it's speaking to my current situation, having come back home after being away, and feeling like i'm in some sort of exile. i breathe my good shadow, trying to remember how good life was going before i came back. it seems like it's almost not a part of me when i'm here. and people literally talk differently here. sure, they speak english, but it's just a different social and political climate. so now i have to learn to speak a language that i had almost erased. the loneliness and last ditch effort at holding onto something (anything) are really shining through in this song for me right now. |

this reminds me of f. scotty fitzgerald's "the beautiful and damned." it's about the descent of a young, foolish couple into their own personal hells, helped along by excessive partying and a general wasting of the years of their youth. also interesting to note is that since the book was written in the late 1910's and early 20's, there is no mention of sex, except very cryptically, which could lead the casual reader to believe that the characters never actually have sex. it's an interesting read. you have to be used to scotty's writing style, though. he can pander around a little too much. but i enjoy all the interesting things he has to say when he does, so it's no problem. |

i liked this song immediately. i think it fits quite well with the rest of the album. as for the title, i think it could probably be pretty arbitrary. i mean, songs and poems i write are often arbitrarily named after people i know or who have influenced me. some of my compositions sound pretty sad, angry, or weird, and it's not necessarily a reflection on the person in the title of the song. i don't know if that made any sense. it's pretty early in the morning right now, so forgive me. |

as i prepare to leave this place behind, go off to college, and essentially begin my life, i keep listening to this song. plenty of people i knew from high school are still hanging out together, happily preparing to go to the college that's right here in town. i almost feel as if i've already left. so i'm terrified about leaving, but i'm trying to "allow myself no mock defense, and step into the night." it seems scary, but "nothing holds a candle to the solemn warmth" i feel inside, because i know that my college will be a much better place for me. |

no, i think you've got it spot on socrilles. that's what it means to me. someone i loved was able to use my influence to get over a previous relationship, but for reasons unknown didn't want to be with me. now, i feel as though the song speaks simlutaneously to both her and me. i asked her to listen to it, back when we actually communicated on a deeper than superficial level. now she's of course moved on to someone new, and the friendship is gone as well, because i've learned that she's only really capable of being close to one person at a time. ah, well. c'est la vie. i suppose i was lucky to have her friendship for the short time that i did. |

this song resonates with my current situation, as most coldplay songs seem to have done for me throughout my time in forging relationships with people. to me, it's definitely about unrequited love for another, on a very deep and illogical level. in my case, a friend i've become very close to. i had to tell her how i feel, but felt as if i was "fighting with my weak hand", because i went into that conversation knowing that she would probably not want to be with me. so i dove in at the deep end, taking a shot in the dark, and have now just become her best friend. she says that it could happen later, that it is possible that once she works out some things in her life that we could be together. i want to love her enough to wait for her, but i don't know if i can. but i don't know what else i could do, either. |

a common problem with relationships can be that you both come from the same set of friends. as a result, when a relationship falls apart, people take sides, and "...all your sorrows are stacked amongst your nest of friends...". also, people seem to rate the validity of relationships by how long they last, which is addressed in that same little verse. by the way, it is most likely "all of the tour songs", since honus does tour a lot. |

i really like the "i don't see what everybody sees in your sexy body..." part, because it perfectly describes some people that i know. everyone thinks they have good character because they're good looking and charming, but, like honus, "...all is see is a shallow grave trapped inside a pretty face". also, i love the sort of breakdown at the end with the girls singing "...there ain't no god here, as far as i can see..." and others in the background. i just enjoy lyrics that question god for some reason. |

there's a lot of onomatopoeia in this song . what i get from it is that, possibly, butter beans sold his soul to satan (who is speaking), and satan has come to collect his due. butter beans tries to run, and doesn't want to leave his life ("...butter beans, i know she wants you..."), but satan reminds him that what he has isn't real, because satan got it for him, in exchange for his soul ("...you’ll make a lovely headdress or a double breasted suit..."). then, butter beans attempts to hide out, and to counter satan's dark magic with some sort of spell. i've been reading a lot of harry potter lately, though, so, i guess bear that in mind. |
