I think this song is about a failing relationship where he's lost "overboard". Every time his girlfriend/ex comes around more troubles occur and people are talking about how he's on the outs. The second verse seems like a while later once he has moved on and has heard in passing that she's doing ok. He still doesn't understand why the relationship didn't work out, but has resigned himself to the fact that it is over and so he will speak to her through this song when she hears it on the radio. |

I always assumed, but don't quote me on this, that "distance is short when your hand carries what your eye found" was a translation of an tribal saying meaning, "If you hold your hand up, and what you see fills the opening between touched fingers and thumb, then it is close to you and not far away. I don't know where that came from, but it's what I've always thought when I heard it. I associated it in the song with keeping a picture of someone so that you could always "go be with them" in your mind. |

It seems to me like they're telling the kid to forget the idea of being a fireman and keep painting. It's like they know what it means to be a fireman, the kid certainly doesn't, and are telling him that it would be better to paint. |
