Also wanted to mention sobrevivier means "surviving" or "to survive." I'm thinking Paul might be saying living is no longer about winning, losing and thriving but simply surviving. Two more things (sorry to whoever is reading this, I become obsessed with the meanings behind lyrics and seem to have an endless chain of thoughts about what they could mean). First, I noticed the way he says "please, please the place we're in now". At first I thought he was just repeating the word "please" but now I'm thinking he means "please give pleasure to the place we are in now," the place being earth after we were chased from heaven, thrilled by sin, and altered by our sin. Secondly, I noticed at the end of the song Banks whispers "oh my Lord", somewhat confirming my thought that the lyrics are emerging from religious beliefs and history. I just got some really nice earphones and can him saying it pretty well. I also think that the part about Eve causing the damage that we are chasing (sin) after our fall may be a sexist view of religious history, but listen to Pace is the Trick on OLTA and it won't be surprising that Banks says such things in regards to women in his lyrics. The Undoing (of mankind in my mind) is a truly amazing song. I really feel Interpol has only been progressing lyrically and instrumentally, contrary to hipster belief. If you are reading this let me know what you think! I'd be honored to get some ideas from fellow Interpol fans. And sorry for the essay... Haha |

I just got the album a few weeks ago and have been constantly drawn to this track. It reminds a lot of Rest My Chemistry from OLTA. When I first heard the track I was struck with the idea of someone dealing with sin of some sort. I was thinking of the fall of Adam and Eve and what has become of humanity since the fall of mankind (from a religious perspective). I think it might be about Eve being tempted by the devil before Adam could warn her and then Adam being drawn in by temptation as well. The pleasure of sin could be the damage that was cause that we as humans are chasing.
The Spanish portion may be explaining how we can never really win as humans after our fall because of the confusion of freewill.
I also noticed he says "slowpoke" repeatedly during the beginning of the song, implying Adam was too late. |

yearzeroseven, theres a good interview with trent on what he was thinking as he created these songs. for capital G he talks about greed. look it up on youtube. you could interprit in subliminally as goverment/george/god, but he is primarily talking about greed. |

um, this egb fellow seems to be a bit confused. the Islamic religion does in fact believe in the same God as in Christianity as well as judiasm. they just do not believe that he had a son, though they do believe in Jesus. Just because some dumbass has a turban on their head doesnt mean their a muslim scholar or "saiyd". haha. reading your comment made me laugh. |
