I have a different concept of what this song really means. It's not that Billy Brown found himself gay, he only found himself confused. After all, he still has his wife, his male lover (though he left them) and, after going to that island off the coast of Mexico, he found this girl who he would make love to.
He is just "a victim of the times", of his time, of our time. It's a time of confusion in every way, and, strictly on this case, it's a time of sexual confusion. Nobody is 100% straight or 100% gay, they say. We just didn't find ourselves yet. |

That's one of the songs that I relate to entirely. Had a gf once, broke up with her stupidly because I thought all those feelings had gone away. Treated her like she was just a toy, cause when I broke up I didn't really explain that much and she never had the chance to say anything. Probably haunted her everyday for a long time, poor girl... I feel horrible whenever I remember it. And just to finish it, 2 weeks after I broke up with her, realized I still loved her and cared about her. And still do. Can't really forgive myself. |

Ok now, I can be taking this song too basically, too 1st degree, but since the first time I stopped to think about it I can't think of anything other than Rivers walking on the streets at night and a friend runs into him (or even plays some trick, like scaring him or smtg) coming outta nowhere, as he says, and he ends up hurting that person in some way. When he says "you're just doing your thing" I can't think of anything else... he's saying "you're just being yourself". But I agree with the fan version. And can't decide if all those others meanings work for me. |
