This song is clearly about sex. Not sick sex, perverted sex, or even rape. This song is about a young man, or perhaps even an old man, losing his virginity. “I want it bad. I want it now. Oh can’t you see, I’m ready now…I’ve seen all the pictures, I’ve studied them forever. I wanna make a movie so let’s star in it together.” This clearly shows that the man referred to only has experienced porn in his life, which is the closest he has ever come to sex. His reference alone about “wet dreams” backed up with “you gotta take these dreams and make them whole” backs up the theory, as well as the line “I can’t believe that it took me this long.” Also, referring to his inexperience are several lines. “I’ve seen this storyline, played out so many times before”, showing that he is strictly going by what he has seen in his porn movies. “That goes in there, then that goes in there, then that goes in there, then that goes in there, ohhhhh (made in somewhat of a post-ejaculation sound), and then its over”…sounding like he’s taken it from some sort of a porn manual. That’s what this song is about. |

| Marilyn Manson – The Reflecting God Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Ok, I’m going to touch on things that nobody has come to even mention yet. People have tried to twist this song inside and out in the hopes that there is some hidden meaning or logical reason behind these lyrics. It has nothing to do with killing others. The point of this song is simple: convincing troubled individuals with low self-esteem that the only way to have an impact on others is to commit suicide. Manson’s words of commiseration from the beginning makes the listener feel compelled to pay attention because he makes perfect sense to that individual. I’ve seen many interpretations of the title. In my opinion, its pretty simple. Memorize the lyrics and recite them while looking at yourself in the mirror. “Your world is an ashtray. We burn and coil like cigarettes, the more you cry your ashes turn to mud.” -This simply means that feeling sorry for yourself or reaching out to others only ends up making your life worse. From the beginning, Manson presents the feeling of empathy and understanding in terms of what the listener is going through “The nature of the leaches, the virgins feeling cheated. You’ve only spent a second of your life.” -This compares humans to leaches in the sense that (particularly for young males), the ultimate goal in life is sex. Therefore, the virgins, or under-sexed feel cheated out of the pleasure that others appear to be entitled to and because of that, they haven’t truly lived. “My world is unaffected, there is an exit here. I say it is and it’s true.” -This is talking the listener up to convincing himself that only he alone can create a way out of life that nobody but himself can enact. “There is a dream inside a dream, I’m wide awake the more I sleep. You’ll understand when I’m dead.” -I believe that this was intentionally meant to be a cryptic portion. I think that what is trying to be said is that the individual’s state of mind is beyond the comprehension of anyone in existence…once again pushing the point home that he feels isolated and that nobody can identify with him. Thus, nobody will understand him until after the suicide, perhaps in the form of a suicide note or manifesto. “I went to God just to see, and I was looking at me. Saw heaven and hell were lies.” -Knowing Manson’s background, this is a clear lashing out at Christianity in general. He went to church and prayed, but nothing got better. In doing so, he determined that what the church was preaching wasn’t reality. He himself was the only thing that was real in his own eyes. “When I’m God everyone dies!” -I know that most people consider this as a blueprint for a killing spree, but I interpret it differently. The whole point of the song thus far is that the individual thinks that others don’t even acknowledge his existence. Therefore, by killing himself, they no longer exist to him either. “Scar, scar can you feel my power?” -This gives the individual a sense of empowerment knowing that after his suicide those who had hurt him in life, or rather scarred him, now have to deal with the guilt potentially caused by their lack of acceptance of or reaching out to him. “Shoot here and the world gets smaller/One shot and the world gets smaller. Shoot, shoot, shoot motherfucker!” -This is the individual encouraging himself to end his life. When it’s all done, the world will be a smaller place without him. His only impact on the world will be the one felt by his death. “No salvation, no forgiveness….” -The individual is reassuring himself that to continue living will not improve anything…while at the same time convincing himself that there will be no spiritual retribution by committing suicide. |
