| Toto – Hold The Line Lyrics | 7 years ago |

| Tracy Chapman – Fast Car Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| @[skaunity101:830] Her music is beautiful and keep at it. I know this sounds condescending, but one day you will realize what this song is about, and I guarantee that it will make you cry. Or your audience. Either way it will be a win. | |
| MGMT – Kids Lyrics | 11 years ago |

@[Dang:790] son yeah, I was listening to this song while working out yesterday and all of the sudden I thought of "The Giving Tree" and I thought the songwriter just MUST have meant to make that connection. Funny how I never caught it in the hundreds of times I've listened to this song before. Anyway, I came here to see if anyone else thought there was a giving tree reference. |

| Robert Earl Keen, Jr. – Shades of Gray Lyrics | 12 years ago |

Whoah. Just heard this song tonight. Had to listen twice to really get it. Late April of 1995 was when the Oklahoma City Bombing occurred. So these kids stole a cow from one of their ex-girlfriends' dad, and because they were high and drunk, got paranoid and made a run for Mexico. They stopped just over the Kansas state line (not how you get to Mexico, btw--stupid kids) because the narrator got sick, and they were under suspicion from the FBI for a moment before the FBI realized they were just drunk stoned kids and moved on. What a great story told from an interesting point of view. Great song. REK is such a fantastic story teller. |

| Robert Earl Keen, Jr. – Think It Over One Time Lyrics | 13 years ago |
|
"The hardwood's flying by like punches in a barroom brawl" should be: The hard words flying by.... Great song. One of my favorites. It's about one of those arguments you know a relationship probably just can't recover from. The kind where too much is said that can't be taken back, and it just seems like the only possible outcome is just to leave, so the woman wants to leave but the guy is still trying to convince her to stay. |

You make an intersting point. This must be why there are no songs about cilantro. I for one, am for it....but I suppose it's not for everyone. |

Seems like it could be about the process of gaining fame and notoriety, especially as a musician. Like the tapping your heart, is the artist pouring his heart and soul into his music, which is art for him, but just something to be consumed and judged by everyone else. Fans and listeners expect so much from artists, and if you like them, you look for references to their personal life in their songs. You read interviews hoping to find out more about them, like you just expect them to open up and show you their inner workings because they're famous and you're desperate for that flash of their life. Then, maybe you shit all over it. "Oh yeah, I used to like them before the sold out. Their first album was awesome but now that they're famous they kinda suck, etc." It's about gaining a little fame or notoriety and feeling constantly judged, even by your "fans". The show me how to shine might be a little jab: Well then, you tell me how you think I should act. How do you think this "star" should be in order to shine? I dunno, I could be way off, but that's the way I see this song. |

| And I've actually been in this exact situation, and I kept having recurring dreams about floods. It was odd, but when I heard this song, I could definitely relate. | |

I think it's about being in a relationship with someone and they've moved on before you're even broken up. You sense there's something off, then you know there's something off, but you don't know how to address it so you just keep bracing yourself for the moment they break it off. |

| Counting Crows – Raining In Baltimore Lyrics | 16 years ago |

This song reminds me of a boy I liked in high school. It brings me such wonderful memories thinking how miserable we all thought we were in high school over unrequited love because we didn't have real problems to deal with yet. It was a beautiful time, and I can't help smiling when I hear this song even though it is a very sad song, it brings me great joy. |

| Everclear – Like A California King Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
Wow. I had never heard that this song is about himself. In that light, it makes me think of that self-destructive impulse--like just when you start to finally be successful, sometimes you'll do something that brings it all crashing down. Totally makes sense with his self-destructive past. Think about it, the lyrics: I will find you in a crowded room, I will knock you off your feet, I will burn you just like teenage love, I will eat you just like meat, I will break you into pieces, hold you up for all the world to see, yeah, what makes you think you are better than me. Like, if his old self were to meet him, this is what his old self would think. But that old self still there, inside of him, a part of him, waiting for an opportunity to ruin it all. Anyway, that's just my take, being someone who has self destructive tendencies myself. Like sometimes it's easier to be a loser because then there's really nothing at stake, so you start to resent your own success. |

| John Mayer – Slow Dancing in a Burning Room Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Ok, the velcro thing, that was funny. I wouldn't exactly call a sense of humor "immature bullshit." That said, "You'll try to hit me just to hurt me so you'll leave me feeling dirty 'cause you can't understand" If that doesn't just sum up at least one side of every doomed relationship I've been in... Brilliant. I had decided to despise John Mayer based on "Your body is a Wonderland," but this song has completely changed my mind. |

| Wang Chung – Dance Hall Days Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
For some reason, to me it sounds like an abusive boyfriend likening a fight with his girlfriend nostalgically to when they used to go out dancing. That's probably not right, but at first it sounds like they're dancing, but in the second verse it sounds like their fighting because of "take your baby by the hair" and "take her by the ears." Or maybe it's rough sex. |

| R.E.M. – World Leader Pretend Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Wow. George Bush, anyone? REM is telling an opposite story. But, World leader, pretend---do yo see it? This is my mistake, let me make it good. Um.... I raised (razed) the wall, let me be the one to knock it down. Raised the wall. Reminds me of the proposed wall between Mexico and the US. There are so many political parallels in this song. I hope the US learns from history. "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." |

| Ryan Adams – Life Is Beautiful Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
"But you gotta play that music for who's listening. You gotta have someone you gotta sing it to" That line is what makes Ryan such a powerful singer/song writer. I can't believe I'm only the second person to comment on this song. In my mind, this song is about creating-- You plant a rose, you raise a child, you build a house... it's about all of the things we invest in, and the fact that it takes work, and involves the possibility of pain, even if you create something from scratch. But, even though everything doesn't always turn out just as you imagined, you just have to find happiness and beauty where you can. Ryan's songs tend to be depressing and I think this is the most uplifting. The first time I heard this song, it was the line, "If I don't believe in love, then I don't believe in you. And I do." This song is a strange mix of sadness and beauty, as if you were standing on the ledge, looking down, and suddenly saw something that reminded you that....life IS beautiful. |

| Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Follow You Into the Dark Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Today is mothers' day, and my mother sent this song to me, and although I am familiar with the band, I had never heart THIS song. I wish everyone had the first experience of this song that I had, because although this song may not necessarily be about parental love, it certainly seems to fit. To make it short, this song is obviously about love and death, but a deeper love than most people are thinking of. |

| The Smiths – Girlfriend in a Coma Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
It's very simple. He didn't PUT her in a coma, he is just ambivalent towards her. For those who have to link homosexuality with EVERY Smiths/Morrissey song, maybe he is ambivalent to girls in general, but mostly this is just a song about a boy who is with a girl who is starting to wonder if he really wants her, or just any girl. Hence, "No, I don't want to see her" followed by "Will you please let me see her?" And in the end he has come to terms with the fact that he doesn't really love her, so he says his last goodbyes. |
