seems like he realized that he was living life the wrong way, thinking it was the the only way: "looking forward on paths", but "sideways" - the direction was wrong to begin with (maybe its the way he was taught by whoever "kissing families" represents) Things get so bad that he seems to momentarily contemplate suicide: "this could be the bitter end" but quickly decides against it. This is a hopeful song because he realizes what and why he was living a certain way. "Its no wonder that we did it this way" - you do what you know right? He does express remorse for the wasted time but more importantly sees the silver lining because whatever happened is finally over and he looks back and in completion sees how the mistakes/wasted time magically made sense (connected and beautiful) not sure its about a relationship, the ring can represent any union |
