I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the connection to the later song "Consequence of Sounds," in which she reprises the first lines of this song with the opening of the third stanza, with the line "The gravedigger's still getting caught in the machine" Later in the stanza she says "Just cause one song is done There’s always another one" A very cool connection, since Consequence is a growth and a refinement of the melodic rap thing she does in this song. |

In response to Oobleshmerfadarkle's observations about the gravedigger stanza: The initial lines are also a clear reference to her earlier song Pavlov's Daughter, off of the album 11:11, which begins: The gravedigger's getting stuck in the machine I hear you call my name: Regina, Regina, Regina-ah-ah I think this puts this song in a little bit of context -- in it she revisits the rapping style she experimented with on Pavlov's Daughter, but further refined and smoother, a trend which could also be applied to her overall growth from 11:11 to Songs. It's funny, because I listened to both albums a long time before I noticed the connection. |
