So many wars, settlin' scores, bringing us promises, leaving us poor You weren't sure about this whole bit on war etc. I think it's more of a reference to colonialism and neocolonialism, as many Africans fought in European/American wars (e.g. WW1 and WW2). Still today many wars in Africa are a result of Western commerce etc. After colonialism, military coups and all out wars plagued the continent as it was thrown into Independence with no real hope for peace (but constant promises ... "bringing us promises, leaving us poor") I heard them say, love is the way love is the answer, that's what they say But look how they treat us, make us believers we fight their battles, then they deceive us Again i think "they" refers to the West - North Americans & Western Europeans. Definitely the Buffalo Soldier reference to Bob Marley's song suggests that this is about Europeans controlling Africa... I think Bob Marley's song in particular is about an African "brought to America" (in the slave trade). |

I'm studying abroad in England too!! My best friend gave me a CD when I left and this is the first song on it. For me, it reminds me about my home, not my experience away. She also wrote a note saying how we don't need to worry because we're so close that months/years away won't change anything. "no need to say goodbye" :) For me, I'm the one away, who will come back when it's all over, to my love (because my boyfriend is also at home, waiting for me to come back :D) |

| yeah i agree with raraerica for the most part. but, J-Box, it can still be "fluffy" if thats how u want to interpret it. there is totally more than just one meaning to this song. more then one thing they are trying to express. its sweet though =) | |

"Is it you and me?" At the beginning, the man has hope that he'll find someone and be happy. But by the end of the song, when he asks "Is it you or me?", he's asking why the last date didn't turn out. I think pretty much everyone who has given their opinion so far is correct. The woman is probably overweight, and self conscious about her phsyical flaws. She thinks it was her fault. The man has deeper emotional problems ("nothing to heavy"...) and there is a good chance that it was his fault that their attempt failed as well. This question finishes the song, and the listener is left to wonder which character is to blame, but there is no answer. I'd guess that this song applies to most ppl's lives, in whatever relationship problems they are having. It is personal (like the title), and the terms "you" and "me" kind of make you put it in your own situation. :) I'm a fan. |

I think everyone pretty much got it right with their interpretations of this song, talking about a girl being out of the narrator's league and all of that. I hear it a little bit differently, however. Rather than him mentioning a previous relationship at one point, i think this whole song is definately just about one girl. He says "you" so often and is obvsly speaking to one person, about herself. And when I heard this song i got the impression that he knew her fairly well already, and that they have a bit of a history, they've been through things before. Also, if you read these lines this way: "It's just like you to come and go and know me, no you don't even know me." it makes sense that he's saying, its just like her to "come and go" (interpret that however u like, maybe they have a bit of an on-again-off-again relationship), and that its just like her to think she knows him well, but she really doesn't! she doesnt understand him, or know whats on his mind. "you're a silly/stupid girl" reminds me of a 3 year old talking to his playmate... the line just seems immature/infantile to me. and obviously they added it in for a reason, but right now i'm just not sure. so, these are a few thoughts that have passed thru my mind while i listen to the song and read a few of the comments posted about it. :P btw, if i didnt mention it before, i LOVE the tune. :) |

MrLongrove said that "Some songs just shouldn't be covered and this is one of them!" true, sort of. There is a beauuuutiful rendition of the song on Aphex Twin's album "26 Mixes for Cash" ... by Phillip Glass and his orchestra... amazing... and strange and completely different. it is obvsly unlike any other cover of the song... and does not try to immitate it, rather, it creates something new with it. beautiful. |
