while it may be about a girl and a breakup or something like that, i feel that this song itself is about growing old. obviously, the lyric "time takes it's crazy toll" supports that, as well as stuff like "'cause she's gonna take you for a fall".. but aside from the lyrics, let me explain this from a different perspetive if you listen to this song at a young age, and enjoy it so much that you happen to listen to it a lot, try thinking about how you would feel listening to it again at a very old age.. like if you were nearing death and you listen to it again, you would feel an unbelievable wave of emotions and memories. the song is nearly 20 minutes, and completely changes pace at different points in the song. it's slow and calm in the beginning, and progresses into uncomfortable chaos. by doing this, i feel that sonic youth is trying to make the song resemble a life, with the length resembling a long lived life and old age, and the chaos as death and regret. basically, if i was on my deathbed listening to this song, it would first bring back memories from the past, but as it progressed it would turn into a reminder of how those days are over, and become the scary fact that all that's left is death and whatever may be beyond it. |

uhh i just want to fix a few things. everything i wrote above still stands, i just want to make a few things clearer. the line "Polar opposites don't push away" means he is singing about both sides of himself, and they don't 'push away' because they are both inside of him. and also "Hi-fi Gods try so hard to make their cars low to the ground" the people he is referring to do drink a lot, which makes them low, but are not yet alcoholics. "These vibrations oil its teeth" and then the feeling that they get from drinking makes it easier for them to become alcoholics, since falling into alcoholism is not very tough, where the oil would make it even easier for them. and i didn't analyze the other lines because they pretty much have clear, obvious meanings. |

"Polar opposites don't push away" i think that here, the singer is singing about himself, where he has two different sides: one when he is drinking and an alcoholic, and one when he is not. the fact that isaac brock did struggle with alcohol is just more evidence to this belief. i do also agree that the line "And I know I should go but I'll probably stay And that's all you can do about some things" means that he is fully aware that he should stop drinking, but he just cant really follow through with it and stop. now the line "Two one eyed dogs, they're looking at stereos" i think it means that each 'one eyed dog' is a metaphor for the alcoholic side and the non-alcoholic side of him, and the fact that they are both looking at stereos relates to the dog gramophone picture (you can google the image), which is called 'his masters voice.' this could be further related to the lines "And I know I should go but I'll probably stay And that's all you can do about some things," for both sides of him are listening to 'his masters voice,' which is really his voice from within telling himself that he really needs to quit drinking. as for the lines "Hi-fi Gods try so hard to make their cars low to the ground These vibrations oil its teeth Primer gray is the color when you're done dying" this is tough, but i think what it might mean is "Hi-fi Gods" could be wealthy, or simply people who aren't alcoholics, and "try so hard to make their cars low to the ground" could mean that they drink, since making their cars 'low to the ground' could again be related to alcohol, which since is a depressant, makes you feel low, so the cars would symbolize their selves as they get low from drinking. and then "These vibrations" would mean the feelings that you get from alcohol "oil it's teeth," which would mean make it easier to become an alcoholic by 'getting bitten by an addiction to alcohol' or something. then "Primer gray is the color when you're done dying" could mean since alcohol makes you feel worse and worse, primer gray is a dark, ugly color, so if and when these 'gods' who became alcoholics and then managed to eventually quit, they could realize that their life is pretty bad, (since alcoholism does ruin lives) but could now be improved, or 'repainted,' since primer gray is also used as an undercoating to make other colors really show nicely. "when you're done dying" i don't think he meant dying as in actually being dead, i think he meant "when you're done dying" as when you're done with this alcohol abuse which was kind of 'killing' you inside. it's a lot, but, that's what i think this song means. this song is amazing by the way. |
