| Sonic Youth – Do You Believe In Rapture? Lyrics

I think the lyric is actually "Stand behind his drunken amp." I took this to mean low-quality or warbley. "Stand behind his light of love" seems to me to mean in the spotlight (for all to see, a one way transmission). "...bloody tongue...blood and war" is pretty self-explanatory. "Do you believe..."--Can this man be trusted? Should I give in to his answers when I have none? "Terrible hit..."--Could be 9/11, Iraq invasion, etc., which sends all of the believers into "rapture" mode...the end is nigh, etc. "Can you tell me..."--Can you give me an answer to the things I can't understand? Can you tell me what to do next, give me meaning, control? Can you save me?
I think the song is basically a jab at Christian fundamentalism and giving too much power and reverence to those who claim to have answers when we do not... |

I think the song's about getting so far gone in a trip that you feel like everything is an illusion, trying to "state your case" as to what is real if anything, and contemplating the importance of your life. You may feel like you have to "create a good illusion" to live your life as a normal person. It's a tender situation because you feel like you have undone your whole existence, and you are treading carefully to put it all together. "Taste the waste" is realizing how fake our lives can be, and the feeling that you are wasting it. "What's your place in my glorification" is wondering how you can live more true to your real self (god/oneness). Feeling the grip of your salvation is seeing something more true than anything in your life and feeling eternity. "Get off the pot man shake and bake" is saying to use your new knowledge to make a difference in the way you live based on what you've experienced. "Pump it up or stray from that old station" is saying to make the choice to stay how your are or apply what you have learned on the trip to your life.
This is pretty subjective, but I listened to this on my first real trip, and the words had a big impact on me. This is basically what they meant to me at the time. The words were my bible for about 8 hellish hours. The album version sounds all washed out and numb, which is about how I felt at the time. |

Also, brown is basically interchangeable with bizarre. Their earlier albums are more brown than the newer ones, but the one coming out soon is supposed to be more brown. In this song, I would say it has the same meaning. Maybe "brine" is liquid LSD? Not sure about that, but it fits. |

The song is most definitely about a psychedelic experience. The mutilated lips, tentacles, etc., are just the bizarre, indescribable feelings and thoughts that are involved with psychedelic drug use. During the trip, his mind is shifting from images and feelings of tentacles, to Haile Sellase I, to "tap dancing" on the world (a fairly believable trip). I think "take my hand you ugly girl" is saying that he realizes that true beauty is within, and all is beautiful, even an ugly girl. As for the midget provoking violence, I think it is a reference to the song Mourning Glory on the album Pure Guava. In this song, someone (Gener?) is on a (morning glory?) trip talking to pumpkins, and a "little man" is cussing them and berating them for using drugs. Maybe this song is saying that in their early days, they didn't understand drugs as well, used them irresponsibly, and didn't get the right message from it. Maybe they say, "Midget man provoking violence - listen not to what I said" because they now have a better and deeper understanding of psychedelic experience and want to say they were wrong or misguided before. I think this is a very deep song and can be understood a lot better by people who have tripped before. |
