I just wanted to say that i strongly agree with slccritchle1. I don't think this is a song about all the darkness of the world or ending your life. I think it's about the opposite. And as slccritchle1 also said "the loss of freedom engendered by the advent of capitalism".The monotone life of an underclass-worker, and a longing for something else, something more beautiful than what are. The line that got to me the most though was "Far from all the things that we are". Because all the bad things in this world, every hurting feeling inside of us, every oppression - is what we are. The human beeing is complex and mostly very disappointing. And since everything that we think is bad is what we are, then also we have the power to change it. "Eat up all the gray, and it will fade away. Don't let yourself fall down". So to me this is a very calming song. But also as someone wrote earlier, Patrick Watson probably wants us to find something that speaks to us in this song, make it our own. Because that's what art is all about! Text writing, song making, acting, painting. Every artist strugle towards the same goal - Katarsis, the definition of a sudden emotional climax. A feeling (or feelings) that plants new thoughts in our minds, or brings us a feeling of total rapture. In short terms, to intermediate a feeling whether it's sorrow, compassion, happiness... If he've managed to do that, then he has succeded. |

| It's funny. I don't know a single word in french, but still everytime i listen to this song it makes me feel relived. As some of you have said, it makes you understand that tomorrow is not yesterday, and whatever you've gone through you always have something else ahead of you. It's wonderful how you can understand a song without understanding a single word they're singing. It could also be that the beat in the song goes just like a train... | |
