FIRST!
Basically, a guy is having a hard time getting over an old relationship.
At the time, he thought they were sharing something wonderful and very special, but he's completely taken by surprise when she suddenly betrays him somehow. He berates himself for being blinded by love; he should have seen it coming.
Now, he's met someone else. Someone he actually really likes, and wants to start a new life with. But unfortunately, he's constantly haunted by lingering feelings for his former lover. He's making the attempt to move on with his life, but it's difficult for him, and it's starting to put a strain on his current relationship.
So he confers with his new girlfriend, putting it all out in the open. He asks her to be patient while he tries to let go of the past. He admits to being aloof and irritable lately, but explains it's because he's worried he'll have his heart broken again.
As for the fox and the fable part ... I'm assuming it's a reference to Aesop's "The Fox and the Grapes", where he's the fox and his old girlfriend is the grapes. If he can stop pining over his old girlfriend, and cope with the fact that the good times they had together in the past are no longer attainable, then he'll be able to convince himself she was never worth loving in the first place.
Damn good song. My favorite off of Port of Morrow. |

| The Avett Brothers – Paranoia in B-Flat Major Lyrics

These lyrics are just a little off ...
Anyway, I feel like it's basically about someone who suddenly finds himself being paranoid about everything in his life. FOR SOME REASON, he thinks people are constantly judging and hating him. He even thinks his friends are turning against him. He's in a relationship with someone, whom he truly loves, but he's afraid his paranoia is going to tear them apart. In the last part, he vows to defeat his paranoia so that their love will triumph.
I could be completely on the wrong track, but oh well. Great song! So damn good. |

I agree with Variable ... The whistling at the end makes this song probably my favorite off of The Slow Wonder. This is one of those albums I didn't need to listen to a couple times in order to like it; I fell in love with it immediately! Two thumbs way up! |

Depending on my mood, I tend to think this version of Phantom Planet's 'California' is, in fact, BETTER than the original. But then I listen to Phantom Planet's and think their's is better than THIS one. And then I listen to THIS one and ................. |

Fraud IN the 80s makes me think these "poser" bands aren't current bands but rather bands back then that tried too hard to be like bands that were big at the same time. Yikes, was that a run-on sentence or WHAT?! Heh |

I actually kind of agree with you Tinsel Shine.
Maybe the 'poison word' is actually something like "Hypocrite." No one will admit their hypocrites (a poison word that’s never said), but that doesn't prevent others from seeing that they ARE hypocrites (a poison word will not deceive).
And 'a simple frame above the bed' could be like how a lot of people hang a small crucifix above their headboards.
This interpretation could still be way off, but it fits as far as I can tell. And yes, this song IS awesome! |

| Winterpills – Broken Arm Lyrics

OK, so I feel like this song COULD be about a United States soldier having a sudden epiphany (I think I finally understand...) about the senselessness of war, and it's damaging effects.
I think the 'sickle blade' is a metaphor for a military gun. Saying it 'will not comfort the cancer-stricken
or provide some common shade' means even though the gun fights wars, it does absolutely nothing to effectively help people who are already dying (cancer-stricken) or are just trying to go about their daily lives (provide some common shade).
'I finally woke up at the drop' means he's fully aware of just how rotten things have become. His eyes are "wide open." 'And told the driver that he had to stop' means he's refusing to fight any longer, and even pleads with his commanding officer (the driver) to do the same. 'You know these actors always die in threes' is a metaphor for the three branches of the US government. He calls them 'actors' because they pretend to be honest and good, when in reality they're flawed and corrupt, thus he predicts their inevitable downfall. 'The sound of dialog
translated by a hack' means someone (most likely the US Intelligence Agency) is deliberately causing miscommunication, in hopes of continuing the war. 'It gives me chills when she pays the bills and
still has time to surprise attack' means this guy is appalled that the nation keeps wasting money on hasty wars. He refers to the United States as "she."
This guy wants everyone to admit that war IS useless (Come out, come out, come out and say it), and expresses frustration when no one will join him in protesting (Why can't you come out and say it?).
In the last part, the soldier muses about how the military desperately tries to stop him from dropping out (the look of camouflage on the ones who beg), and about how the President (the decider) keeps on insisting that he serve overseas (says i'm a fighter). He's so terrified of war, that his legs shake to the point where he can't even feel them (but i can't feel my fucking legs).
Well then, that's MY interpretation. But honestly, when I listen to this song, though, I don't really try to think of ANY of that, LOL. I just love the way the song sounds. What do YOU think? |

Man, I just love this song. I'm a HUGE fan of the Winterpills. I instantly fell in love with their first album. And I mean INSTANTLY. This song is probably my favorite from 'The Light Divides.' Dunno exactly how it translates, but I feel like it's about a guy who simply enjoys being a "bad" person. Especially the part about dancing downstairs while the bride cries in bed. Makes me think he got married for his own selfish needs (he doesn't really love her and only married her because she was rich, perhaps?). He's such a bad person, in fact, that even when he was born, the world became a darker place (and the sky grew grey). I think the last part about forgetting the author's name but saying a prayer, means this guy's sins finally came back to haunt him. He's never truly acknowledged God's presence before, so when he asks for forgiveness, he doesn't really even understand what he's doing. Anyway, that's MY thoughts about it. I hope one of you will chime in on this one, because the Winterpills definitely deserve more recognition!!! |

What an awesome song!!! It's really intimate, but it's got a lot of punch, too. RW's voice here is right on the money, as always. I feel like it's about someone who's being ignored by their love interest ("Do I love you because you treat me so indifferently?") and the fact that their love isn't being requited is driving them crazy ("Or is it the medication?" "And if I am not prominently featured in your next slideshow, I don't know what I'm gonna do") But even still, they're gonna keep on loving them, regardless of being ignored. (Do I love you? Yes I do.") |

Brandi Carlile has a huge talent; her voice is phenomenal. And The Story is such a great song. I think it's about finally finding (after many tough years of searching) that ONE somebody who understands and loves you completely. Someone who embraces the good in you, as well as the bad. And the joy and the amazing relief that comes with actually having that person in your life. |
