Sufjan Stevens – Inaugural Pop Music for Jane Margaret Byrne Lyrics 15 years ago
I'm not quite sure Stevens has a connection with the community but Byrne's was real. She was a progressive reformer that did much for Chicago, from what I've read on her at least. Either way, we need more progressives like her in office today. On a note more related to the song, what a funky little track. Stevens' "The Avalanche" is a nice supplement to the very popular "Illinois."

The Avett Brothers – Talk on Indolence Lyrics 17 years ago
This song epitomizes my life in college. However, I don't think the opening verse really characterizes indolence, i.e. reading, writing, and thinking. Everything in that first verse is true for my life basically. The first verse seems, to me, to illustrate being consumed with work and noticing that life outside of your work is somewhat passing you by. Despite this, the work that envelopes your life is important to you and so you are willing to forego what's going out there for a while. But during that time you question yourself for a bit, and so confidence declines .. . but it always comes back up. I think that's what it is really about the highs and lows of life at work. At least, that's how I like to interpret it. Also, when he talks about being nervous of what his girl will think of him in his swimsuit that definately was me as well. Just as my soccer career had ended I got a new girlfriend, and by the time spring break came around I was about 20 pounds heavier. But she is a master and didn't care one bit.

Tori Amos – Yo George Lyrics 18 years ago
Once again an ill-informed musician has attempted to make a political statement through their work, and once again the musician has contributed nothing more than an unavailing piece of blather. Personally, I feel that musicians, and actors alike, are better off simply forgoing the production of any politically inspired work unless they have the innate proficiency to do so. Names such as Bob Dylan and bands like Rage Against the Machine have that requisite proficiency, and their incessant success attests to that. However, when lesser artists, not necessarily overall lesser but those lacking that political proficiency, attempt to do so they end up falling short and unfortunately for Amos she has done just that.

Modest Mouse – Bankrupt on Selling Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song illustrates the sheer and utter selfishness that emantes strongly in high school. The way I think about, as a college student, is that this is a reflection of his supposed friends from back in the day and as time has swiftly passed he is really able to discern who are and who are not true friends. He is able to do this because the "friends" actions have clearly illustrated their true nature. In a sense, these people have bought and traded their trash . . . their trash being the self-centered demeanor of their actions that have risked and thereafter lost their friendship. These actions are resultant of people's willingness to do anything for their own self-indulgences. I think when he begins talking about college he is really saying "fuck everyone else because I'm just going to go to college and do my own thing. While I'm there I'm going to better myself beyond all the petty self-centered bullshit." At least this is what it means to me. This song rocks and modest mouse rocks as well.
