kat and courtney wrote alot of songs together before hole was even a band. i think that i would die is a rough version of kat and courtneys version of the song. there are a few songs, for example best sunday dress, that kat and courtney wrote together while in the band sugar babylon, but the version courtney uses in hole are not the exact same. some of the lyrics are much different, but the themes are roughly the same. so, courtney took this song which in the beginning had nothing to do with frances bean, and rewrote parts of it to describe what was going on in her life. frances was taken away from kurt and courtney due to their heroin addiction and put in the custody of wendy cobain kurts mother. im not 100% sure, but if i had to guess, i would think that courtney was directing the lyrics "its not yours, fuck you" to wendy. that can also go for the repetition of "there is no milk" since not only was wendy an older women at this time but she hadnt recently had any children so there was no breast milk to provide from frances while she was away from her mother. i fucking love courtney, and i dont like it when people hate on her. she is musical genius and a hero in my book |

ok i too find it really obnoxious that on every one of hole's songs people write about either courtney killing him (which is the biggest load of bullshit ever) or how the song is about her greiving. even though its annoying though i think every time courtney writes a song kurt is at least always in the back of her mind...i mean he was the love of her life and he died, i mean, c'mon.... and especially this song. i mean it totally gives it away when she says "its better to rise than fade away". Kurt used Neil Youngs quote "I'ts better to burn out than fade away" in his suicide note and courtney fucking hates that quote. When she read the note at the memorial speech she tells everyone not to listen to what he said about the quote because its "a fucking lie". and in a nylon interview she completely condemns the quote saying its the worst thing neil young ever wrote and that its total bullshit |

i have loved this song since i heard it a long time ago... every time i listen to it im taken far away to another place where everythign is just...happier.. my freind asher died in january and they played this song at the funeral..this is when i really realized the true meaning of the song, especially in the lyrics "cuz there's beauty in the breakdown" when tragedy strikes and you feel as if you are going to breakdown, remember that in order to have felt this way something extremely significant must of happened to you, something must have changed your life. i know that when i broke down after ashers death i could find beauty in the fact that i was so upset. it really shows how much we should value our lives and the beauty of the breakdowns can really teach great life lessons. there is beauty in every tragedy. always remember that. |

ii think ktgotskills is exactly right. i do think that he isnt necessarily talking about a husband/wife/girlfreind/boyfreind i think he is definitly talking about a girl who he has seen everything with and been through everything with.. he has always been there for her and will remain to stay by her side even in the face of death. in regards to the catholic school bit, i have attendd a catholic school all my life and i can definitly identify with these lyrics. In catholic school As vicious as Roman rule I got my knuckles bruised By a lady in black And I held my tongue As she told me, "Son, Fear is the heart of love" So I never went back this is exactly right. catholic school is a very strict place and although in 2007 the nuns arent allowed to hit your knuckles and very few of them actually teach classes in their habits (black dresses) or teach classes at all for that matter, in the time ofgibbards childhood nuns were still teaching catholic school and they still wore their habits (black dresses). and they definitly used to hit the students knuckles with rulers... also- it is a strong catholic belief that you should fear God and through that fear will come love..which in my opinion is total bullshit and obvoiusly ben thought so as well but if you have ever spoken to a nun you know way better than to talk back, as gibbard describes in the song. so he left, which might not necessarily mean left the shcool but im pretty sure he means left the faith (which alot of catholics including me do when they disagree with the teachings such as "god is fear and fear is love") i love this song, its absolutly beautiful. death cab never fails me. absolutly perfect |

for anyone who has ever had a bad breakup this song explains exactly how you feel. u lie in bed all night long trying to think of what you did wrong and feeling so dissapointed and trying to think of what you could of done to change the outcome of the situation when in the end it was inevitable.... the beginning is also the perfect way to explain how you feel after a breakup becuase you seem to notice things you never thought about until now because it is so heavily on your mind. it seeems like god is out to get you or something because you keep coming across these momentos that make you so depressed... this song (along with all of the other death cab songs ) is so incredibly amazing and it really does hit the nail right on the spot. i LOVE death cab and their songs can really change your life. |
