No, none of the songs on New Maps Of Hell deal about the Bush administration. Graffin said it himself: "We have one of the least popular presidents of all time, but it's just not interesting to comment on it anymore, and it certainly isn't artistically intriguing. I think bands that talk about that type of stuff miss the boat, so now we've gone back to something I think we've improved upon over the years, and that is being more metaphorical. That's a style of writing that takes a dedication to your craft to get better at it. So I think this album has some of our best writing ever."
I think this song is indeed about doing something with your life, inspiring people, doing something significant. This song definitely has an existentialistic flavour to it. And "scare up some hope", because if you don't it you might destroy yourself (see: Lost Pilgrim). |

I think it's basically about realizing that we might not be able to change the world for the better. All those songs millions of punkers around the world have written, they didn't help. It was all just naive hope. We can't stop people from waging and supporting something as horrible as war. We can't stop people from being short-sighted. And it's only getting worse, "because we're animals with golden rules". We're living in a time of intolerance and lack of respect for each other... however there's still a bit of hope in the line "So avoid those lines of sight and we'll set this right", and the song right after this one (Requiem for Dissent). The world is going to hell, unless people become more tolerant of each other. |

I think this song is about a person that allowed himself to be destroyed by his own cynicism. This person sees the world and humanity as it really is (as do most Bad Religion fans), but he's having a hard time finding a bit of hope between all the negativity. Graffin is basically saying "Respect to you for not sticking your head in the sand, but cheer up and find perfection in the imperfection." Don't let it destroy you. That's my interpretation, maybe yours is different. |

The way I see it, when he's singing he's living in the "Ice Age" it's like a metaphor: people are cold, only care about themselves. Basically he lost any hope he had for a warm, and compassionate world. At least, that's my interpretation. So yeh. |
