I cannot remember where I heard this, but I read that Robinson was originally "Kennedy." At first this didn't really make that much sense, but as I thought it through with others giving imput, it definitely makes more sense than as a reference to Mrs Robinson from the Graduate. Joe DiMaggio was Marilyn Monroe's boyfriend. MM had an affair with JFK. Paul Simon was empathizing with Jackie O. in this song. Jackie O went to candidate debates. "It's a little secret, just the 'Kennedy's' affair Most of all, you've got to hide it from the kids" Who knows though... |

| on the second page of comments babyjane(somenumbers) made the allusion that i was looking for... this song sounds like the shins. however, contrary to her seeming elated feelings from this mix, i'm personally confused. i love modest mouse for their dirty, gritty, out there sound, and this song especially is greatly different from that original sound. that doesn't make me like the band less. i appreciate the music they make now. but, if i want to listen to the shins, i'd rather just put on a shins album... i think it's good that the band has evolved; however, i still think i'll just continue to listen to lonesome crowded west or the moon and antartica than this album or even good news. | |

"to go off on my own" instead of "to grow up on my own" this song is beautiful. while i am at a college 4 hours from the house i lived in for the first 18 years of my life, my close friend and i trade emails with songs that have captured our heart for that particular moment. he has sent me multiple Yo La Tengo songs, and i've really grown to love them. i was skimming the lyrics page and found this song. initially, the lyrics moved me. i did a google search and listened to the song on rhapsody. i was not expecting the beauty of the music to match so well with the lyrics. i'm not sure why i was so taken aback by Yo La Tengo's ability to do this. despite the fact that i'm home right now, i want to go home. this song makes me want to become a child again before i knew what it was like to not be home... before i knew that i could truly ever call another place home... before i knew the confusing feeling of home no longer feeling as safe and secure as it did a year ago. |
