Joanna Newsom – Sprout and the Bean Lyrics 17 years ago
I discovered something that I think is interesting. At about the 1:52 mark, she sings "should we break some bread?"... but there are actually multiple Joanna voices singing, and one or more of them says "should we BAKE some bread". I've been wondering if this has some intricate secret meaning that I'm too dense to understand. I thought it was kind of a mixture of general youth/playfulness of going outside and baking bread to transforming into some vague religious reference (breaking bread at the last supper?)... I know it doesn't make sense, but...

I always thought it was "for he shan't stay here in this wicked world" not "for if she'd stay here in this wicked world"...?

"Hold me close," cooed the dove who was stuffed now with sawdust and diamonds.

-one of my favorite lines ever.

Joanna Newsom – Emily Lyrics 17 years ago
This is one of the only songs I've heard that makes me imagine a whole elaborate scene and characters and a mood and... yeah. This is just an amazing song.

The harp on this song is so gorgeous.

I agree with the lullaby/dream idea, and I think that this line is just flawless:

"Feel the matress tense beneath me
like the muscle of nonsleepy."

Joanna Newsom – Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie Lyrics 17 years ago
Well, when I hear the "your skin is something that I stir into my tea", I imagine her sitting there stirring her tea with her mind swimming with thoughts of this person. Just like, overcome and nostalgic thinking of them... and, well, drinking really calming tea.
