Personally I took that as: Angels are often depicted wearing white. Along this thread of thinking, instead of depicting this angel girl as "dressed in white", Ed has written she will "die covered IN white" - I took this to mean covered in a drug substance such as cocaine, which is powdery and white. Just my take on it though. It's what immediately came to my mind. |

Stevie Nicks was the first thing I thought of after hearing this song. I reckon it's totally about her.. Everything about the Stevie character in the song totally screams Stevie Nicks: -"Stevie was a connoisseur" = of music! An expert at what she does, the finest. -"Everybody wanted to be her" = Stevie's fame in the past particularly. -"She chose her friends as carefully as she chose her words" = being selective about who her friends were due to her fame as well as being an iconic and original songwriter -"She was so sure about it all" = her confidence -"Oh Stevie was a hero once" = her past influence on the music world as a figure -"Had all the things I'd never touch" = Stevie's huge fame and success as an icon, while Lisa is more low key albeit successful -"She wrote in sterling silver with a ballpoint pen" = her incredible lyrics contrasted the simplicity of a simple instrument -"Cold blooded chameleon" = the stark deliverance of her powerful words through her powerful voice maybe, regardless of the ever changing messages? -"Oh Stevie, oh Stevie, Why can't you see You're a god to me" = Her huge influence as a figure, songwriter, singer, performer, a human to Lisa -"Stevie was an ice maiden, Not sure really worth saving" = Her hardened personality - "Alcatraz has nothing on her after all this time" = Comparing her steadfast secrecy and isolation of personality to Alcatraz -"Still I didn't search behind those eyes" = perceiving the meaning behind her personality or songs and how hard it is to do, daunting perhaps. -"Oh Stevie where are you going to, Oh you're as tight lipped as a bottle all screwed" = once again about her secrecy and mystery surrounding her. Also makes another comparison of Stevie and wine that comes later in the song. -"If I had the chance to peer inside your mind, Give up your mystery, why think twice" = Lisa wishes she knew what makes Stevie tick, the mystery behind her apparent genius, she would not blink to know the answers -"Tea-leaves in the cup, You're a good friend of mine, How the sober are, Thirsty for the sweet wine" = To me this could mean: Lisa compares herself to tea. She says tea leaves in a cup are a goo friend of hers, probably being her only accompaniment to the lonely songwriting process of creation for her. She compares "the sober" to Stevie, the wine that she is and drinks in contrast to Lisa's sober song process that is tame and long to write in comparison, that the sober people want the "sweet sweet wine" that is Stevie and her almost magical lyrics that come so naturally to her and intoxicate her audience, including Lisa. -"Now that Stevie has locked her keys in her mind, Got to open up, lay herself on the line" = That Stevie's songs are deeply personal and by writing and performing them she is revealing part of herself, which is always a hard and risky business. Perhaps Lisa is also addressing herself in this bit.. Saying that she must do similarly and open up to her audience about her own deeply personal life lessons in order to thrive. ...That's all I got! |
