The video was perfectly in sync with this song, and it had a number of prominent symbols such as the black-and-white room, the invisible man, the heart-shaped locket, and the colored powder. I interpreted this song, like many other individuals, that she never loved anyone so much that she would be "lifted off the ground" (I never loved nobody fully/Always one foot on the ground); though she protected her heart from breaking, she got lost in what she wanted to truly tell her beloved, placing all her emotions within her heart (And by protecting my heart truly/I got lost in the sounds/I hear in my mind/All these voices/All these words/All this music); and because she did not tell him how she felt, she, in turn, broke her own heart (And it breaks my heart). Additionally, since she does not tell him how she feels, he is invisible to her. She contemplates what her life would have been like if she continued pacifying her pain in love songs (Suppose I kept on singing love songs just to break my own fall), what it would have been like if she did not fallen in love with this wonderful guy (Suppose we never fell in love). Her friends tell her that her relationship will eventually escalate (All my friends say that of course its gonna get better). Nearing the end of the song, she realizes that locking up all of which she knows will not get her anywhere in her relationship. As a result, she pulls off her heart-shaped locket and drops it, spilling the colored powder, her emotions, all over the black-and-white room, coming to an epiphany: if she wants to fall in love, she must accept both the ups and downs that love has to offer her. |
