to me, this song is about love, and being codependant on your lover. the "draining" aspect is that being so in love can drain you of emotional energy. the codependancy is definitely present in the chorus and second verse. there are several drug references so maybe drugs come into play in the lovers' lives. i have a really big attachment to this song, and although i absolutley love almost every single one of nirvana's songs (yes, i own the discography) this might just be my favorite. i can relate to it because i experience the same emotions with my boyfriend. we're so deeply in love that we have found ourselves dependant on each other, and yes drugs may come into play. |

btw, there obviously is someone singing in the background, and its kurt. and dave did write this. krist is playing the bass, and kurt's on guitar i'm pretty sure. end of discussion.
i don't think dave wrote this while he was stoned just because its kinda trippy. and if you look a little deeper the lyrics DO make sense. they're not a random jumble. dave and kurt definitely wrote songs with a deep meaning and not just songs so they can be enjoyed and listened too. plus, if you're stoned (on pot especially) you do have a very good sense and control over everything you're doing, you're sensory perception just may be a little off.
this is probably one of my favorite nirvana songs. its really kind of calm and soothing but its really kinda creepy at the same time. i think it has something to do with authority because the "he's there cause in case i wandered off". marigold is definitely a metaphor for something, i'm just not sure what. |

"shallow be thy game 2000 years look in the mirror"
refering to jesus christ right there.
i totally agree with anthony kiedis's views on christianity.
"i prefer a loving god" means that kiedis believes in a god that should love everyone.
atheists rule, christians drool! hehe. |

when i first heard it i was pretty sure it was about one of his girlfriends. but a lot of you are saying its about heroin. but does anyone look at the title? can't that have to do with some of the meaning? and, excuse you mr. outcesticide. i think YOU'RE the nirvana newbie because you CAN'T decipher any of kurt's lyrics all the way to the bone. most of his songs can be taken to many different meanings. by the way, incesticide is my FAVORITE nirvana album. |

guys, i own the journals and just because its in the journal does not mean its set in stone. kurt altered lyrics a lot in live recordings. plus the versions in the journals are NOT final copies. there are like 12 different variations of verse chorus verse in his journals so if that wasn't a final copy, i don't think any of the songs were when he wrote them in his journals. also, bleach's lyrics are the correct ones to how he sang it on incesticide. and Anorexorcist x and white noise are both right. you can't make sense of his lyrics. kurt writes metaphors that only make sense to him and also his songs can be taken to many different meanings. i disagree with jax55 and 333 im half evil. my personal favorites on incesticide are big long now and turnaround. |

and btw, this song is NOT about aliens. i read like all of kurts journals and he not once mentioned a fascination in aliens/ufos. he actually seemed to have a fascination in pregnancies. (i.e. in utero means "in the uterus" in latin and he mentions how the male seahorse can become pregnant several times) |

mikemagee and comebackkurt i really agree with both of your interpretations. kurt definitely wrote songs with multiple meanings. big long now is just an amazing song and incesticide is by far, in my opinion their best album. only real nirvana fans will ever really understand this albums greatness. |

ok guys, a few things to say and i'm sure other people have said them already but i'm too lazy to read every single post:
1) just because kurt cobain did drugs, does not mean that all of his songs were about drugs. and plus, he HATED drugs. if you read his journals and bio you'll know that.
2) he's a fucking lyrical genius and most of his songs can be taken to different meanings.
3) i personally think this song is about a twin pregnancy. (One baby to another says -
I'm lucky to have met you
I don't care what you think
Unless it is about me
It is now my duty to completely drain you
A travel through a tube
And end up in your infection)
sometimes one twin is the "dominant" twin and takes all of the other baby's nourishment and the other baby is either born underweight, is still born, or dies within the womb. also, i think cobain had like some kind of interest in pregnancies. hence the album name "in utero". in latin, utero means within the uterus. and if you read his journals, he says a bunch of things about pregnancies.
i don't know this is just my personal opinion. it could also be about love or drugs but this is just my take. |

i agree with whoever said its about kurt's generation of only wanting to party and not caring about the world around them. this goes for my generation as well. most of the people i go to high school with don't know shit about the world around them and all they want to do is get drunk and high and party.
i love this song, and its the song that got me into Nirvana but i have to say there are many many many better ones. Nevermind is probably my least favorite album by Nirvana. It was too mainstream. |

yeah kurt kobain didn't kill himself, courtney did. the angle of the bullet was wrong and also he had so much heroin in his bloodstream that it would have been impossble for him to pull a trigger. i fucking love this song. in my opinion the song is about shit pop music ("you could shit on the stage and would still have fans") and("kids would eat up if packaged properly") and how there isn't any individuality anymore. if kurt were alive today i bet he would scoff at the emo shit we have flying around today because its all the same unoriginal meaningless crap that is worshipped by most teenage girls (except me). |

at first when i heard the demo version, i thought this song was about a girl and when she was younger, she was a devout christian and now she's grown up and doing drugs (hallucinating) and having sex (will you rape me now) which are against her religion. but now that i hear this version i totally agree with tendo87. and i can totally relate to this. recently, i became an atheist and buddhism is a non-theistic (no god) philosophy more than a religion. i see how this can be about a girl leaving behind her old tradition. also, science has started replacing a lot of old religious beliefs and today, more and more people are leaving behind their faith. |

This song is about Kurt Cobain, no doubt about it. When I first heard it I thought it was about Kurt, and after I read Kiedis's Biography, Scar Tissue, I knew I was right. The line I always wondered about in this song was "You never knew this, but I wanted badly for you to requite my love". I mean, Anthony and Kurt were friends, but I wouldn't have imagined Anthony in love with him. Cobain admitted his bisexuality in an interview with the Advocate, but where does Kiedis stand? |

looks like my entry got cut off. well here's the rest:
"porcelain" is a metaphor for a fetus or embryo- i don't know the difference. since an unborn child is so fragile, they are like porcelain. i don't think its necessarily about an abortion because in an abortion they cut the umbilical cord and remove the embryo from the mother's uterus. the song instead seems to describe something fading and wasting away. |

what callum69 says is true and i totally agree with Greendaygirl and NirvanaLuva. Courtney Love definately killed him and made it look like suicide or pushed him to killing himself. People say he killed himself because he hated the publicity, but if he hated publicity so much, Nirvana would have never switched to a major label company or gone on MTV unplugged. |

favorite song on the album. my boyfriend sent me the lyrics right after we had gotten into a big fight and almost broke up. thats what i think this song is about. a guy breaking up with his girlfriend, but she has so much of an impact on him and he never wants her to forget him. as much as i love the lyrics, i love the music as well. the bass line is amazing and anthony's vocals are beautiful. my favorite part is the "sideways falling" and the "more will be revealed my friend" at the end of the song. it gives me the chills everytime i hear it. i love this song and it defines my relationship with my boyfriend who is also a chilis freak like me. |

I really don't understand why many RHCP fans don't like this song. I really love it. I see how it could be about an anorexic girl, but I really think it is about a miscarriage. Since the menstrual cycle is about a month long, and the phases of the moon are a month long, it makes sense saying "do you carry the moon in your womb" right next to "some one says that you're fading to soon" |
