I agree, this song is so lonely and touching. Although I don't have the lyrics infront of me, I believe the lyrics are actually: "I've come to feel out on the sea These urgent lives pressed against me I'm just a ghast, I'm not a part" |

I agree with 1Laughing2Boy3, this song thematically reminds me a lot of Life Like Weeds (which is also a fantastic song!). To me it seems that Isaac is always restless, moving from place to place, searching for something he doesn't quite know, when in fact what he's searching for/needs are the people around him. |

What I love about this song is that it takes on a completely different meaning if you pay attention to the first verse: "Lover, now that you've left me, I'm glad you're unlovely. Becuase if you could take all the heat in your heart and just hang it from you, I wouldn't be able to bear the way you cannot love me. It's much easier of me make a monster out of you." I always thought this song was about how horrible an ex-partener was, but the first verse says very poetically how if she wasn't so angry when they broke up, he would see that there was truth in the things she was saying. But because things ended in a huge argument/fight, he'll ignore the things she said and think of her as a horrible monster. |

| Modest Mouse – Spitting Venom Lyrics | 18 years ago |

I'm surprised that so many people don't think this song is about relationships - just shows how people take different things away from lyrics - which is good. To me it is about a relationship that has gotten stale and bitter over time, and he's basically saying that despite how bad things turned out and now that it’s all over, there were some really good times they've forgotten which should be remembered. "Spitting venom" would be the act of saying really hurtful things to the other person just for the sake of hurting them. "Let it all drop" means just forget about the things that were said in spite. “my ears were bristled firmly right against your mouth to hear when you tried to spit the venom out your words were not so clear” reminds me of a line from “Love to a monster” by Okkervil River. I think this line means that while there may have been some truth the accusations she made, her anger made it impossible to really understand what the issues were. "I did't know you kept track I didn't know there was a score" is how in arguments, people will bring up bad things that happened in the past the further their argument. "so we carried all the groceries in while hauling out the trash, and if this doesn't make us motionless I do not know what can" This imagery is how a relationship can go stale after a while, you go through the motions. You act as a couple but there’s an underlying tension because of things that have been said and done in the past. And finally: “cheer up baby it wasn't always quite so bad for every bit of venom that came out the antidote was had” So a lot of horrible things were said, but for everything horrible there were good times which should be remembered. |
