I think it's also Petty's ode to some great musicians: Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey. |

I don't think this song has anything to do with MUSIC! It is a guys POed look at what the broadcasting industry has become. Hell, there's plenty of great new music out there, but you gotta work your butt off to find it. Read Miami Steve's 2005 keynote address at a Jacob's Media summit if you can find it online. The term "homogenized" is used over and over, but local radio refuses to take any chances, so listeners go to satellite that is broadcast nationwide. There's no flavor to it! "Is there anybody alive out there" is a dig at what automation has done to broadcasting. If you're listening to radio at night, there's a big chance the DJ recorded it earlier in the day. And that is why radio has become so disconnected ("trying to make a connection with you"). There are no local jocks to make a connection with their listeners.
I'll get down off my horse now. |

I really like this tune. My thought on it was that it was about mental illness and all the drugs they can put you on so you're "better." The paranoia of "they'll be sneaking up behind you again." They tend to medicate you for life with some of that stuff, so "for the rest of your life you're gonna be high." To me "it's something less than a holiday" fits right in... never easy dealing with that stuff. |

| Paolo Nutini – New Shoes Lyrics

It's about shoes. He could have written about jeans, a hair cut, a leather jacket, or a new book. It simply makes him feel alright, and how simple things can do that.
This is rock 'n' roll at its best. Simple lyrics, not over-produced, and a great hook. Heck, I could sing (if I could sing), "Hey, I got my new song on, and suddenly everything's right" and I'd get the same feeling Paolo gets with his new shoes. |

Once I got a chance to really listen to the lyrics in this song, I immediately thought of the movie "Mean Girls" and "The Plastics" ... how some kids in high school seem to have a "latent power" or float above everybody else, while others only wish to be in that social strata. |

As a former GM of a small radio station, I once changed the format to Adult Alternative. This was the first song we played under the new format. |

I'm usually not a big fan of covers, but Pete did a nice job with this Zevon song. Always thought it was more of a "I just wanna be by myself" song, rather than "LEAVE ME ALONE!" |

Great artist... great song. I think it's a statement to somebody that people like you, even if you're not using. Lyrically, probably not his best. |
