Pink Martini – Lilly Lyrics 17 years ago
I agree, I also think it's about a dog.

The Smashing Pumpkins – The End Is the Beginning Is the End Lyrics 17 years ago
Is it possible that the line is "inside your world of woe" rather than "inside your world of wow"?

I think that would be much less ridiculous.

Collective Soul – Reunion Lyrics 18 years ago
I find this song to be very touching. It has always seemed bittersweet to me. There is an old saying that "you can't go home again." Of course, this doesn't mean that you can't physically go back to your old home, nor does it mean that you cannot revisit and reconnect with your old family and friends. But it means that you cannot ever truly recover the past. That is the tough part about moving on in one's life. No matter how wonderful the move is, no matter how certain one is that one is following the right path, one must always accept that the life one is leaving behind shall be gone forever.

The Buggles – Video Killed the Radio Star Lyrics 18 years ago
An ex-girlfriend of mine was convinced that she'd discovered the meaning of this song. According to her, it had something to do with Robert Heinlein. I never did quite buy it, but she's one of the most brilliant people I ever knew, so maybe there's something to it. Damn, I miss her.

Massive Attack – Three Lyrics 18 years ago
The key lines in this song as I read it are "I'll give back all the knowledge / And keep the wisdom precious in my mind."

As we learn, we learn how to learn. The more knowledge we gain and the more context we have for it, the better equipped we are to find patterns, connections, and meaning underlying raw data. The catch is that by the time we've achieved this level of data processing capability our minds are full of misconceptions, biases, and knowledge which was uncritically assimilated.

There is, then, a desire to keep the mechanism of the trained mind intact, while stripping it of so much useless knowledge. Presumably, one could then relearn everything using a "better" brain.

At the same time, our knowledge, inaccurate as it may be, is something that is significant in helping us define ourselves. To simply erase all of that is a frightening prospect from the standpoint of identity.

And finally, there is the titular number three and its meaning to the song. Children, lacking both knowledge, intuit something special about the number three, but they lack the processing experience to examine that intuition. If a person could combine the mental reasoning of a lifetime of thinking (unadulterated by knowledge) with the natural intuition of a child, one might be able to discover fascinating things about the nature of reasoning, experience, or something else.

Venus Hum – Wordless May Lyrics 18 years ago
The two lines that really jump out at me are "Dear Jesus, make me simple / strong as trees to sway."

I often feel that various factors, not the least of which being my own mind, conspire to complicate my life and, more specifically, the way I respond to situations. And while introspection and thoughtfulness are important, one can outthink oneself. As T.S. Eliot said, "In a minute there is time for decisions and revisions which a minute will reverse."

There is a time and place for simplicity. What kind? The line invokes Jesus's help, and Jesus's was, essentially, a simple message about how to treat people. The line reminds me that while analysis is important, one should not argue oneself out of a position that one simply knows deep down to be right.

The line "strong as trees to sway" reminds us that often strength is not about monolithic rigidity, but a capacity to compromise. And just as trees bend in the wind, thereby remaining unbroken, so should people realize that in difficult situations, it is an ability to adapt rather than a refusal to change that permits them to survive.

Venus Hum – Beautiful Spain Lyrics 18 years ago
Spain... it's a lovely country. This seems to be saying exactly that. Personally, I will always associate the song with Provence. I love the violin: it makes the song!

Venus Hum – Montana Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm not much at interpreting symbolism, but I think that this song is pretty unambiguous. Annette grew up in Montana (the Big Sky state). I think this song is about when Annette was a girl. One beautiful spring day, she decided to skip school and go to the park. Can't say as I haven't been tempted to do the same on numerous occasions.

Poe – A Rose Is A Rose Lyrics 18 years ago
For those interested in the people listed in the song (and for those genuinely concerned with the accuracy of the lyrics) the words following "Gershwin" are not "Tristan, Tzara" as in two people, but "Tristan Tzara"--a single person. He was one of the most well-known figures in the Dada movement.
